Review: Wordy Wednesday: Enchantment
Description: Channie is a lovable teenage mage that lives a simple but magical life with her clannish community deep in the Ozark Mountains. She’s blessed with the ability to enchant those around her, charming not only her family and friends, but any boy with a pulse that doesn’t know how to shield himself against her magic.
When her father’s gambling addiction earns the wrath of a powerful mage, the family is forced to flee for their lives. They escape to the suburbs of Colorado hoping to hide amongst Magically Disabled people (like you and me).
Channie’s parents are overwhelmed by the modern world and panic when they catch her flirting with a group of “dirty-minded, non-magical city-boys.” They strip away her power of enchantment and replace it with a chastity curse that automatically zaps any boy foolish, or courageous, enough to pursue her.
Josh Abrim -- a BMX racer with a killer smile, Olympic dreams and dangerous secrets of his own -- is exactly that kind of boy. When he and Channie realize their interest in each other is more than just friendship, she turns to dark and forbidden magic, determined to break the curse keeping them apart. Her inexperience makes matters infinitely worse and unleashes a malevolent force with the power to destroy everything they love … including each other.
Interview with Josh:
* "What is the name of the book where we'll find you?" asks Phaedra.
"It's a series, so you'll find me in three books -- ENCHANTMENT, TAKEN and the as-yet-untitled third book scheduled for release late summer or early fall 2012."
*"Can you tell us a little about it?"
"Basically, it's a love story, but the author has a mean streak so nothing is ever easy. Channie and I have to fight for our love, our happiness and even our lives."
* "Tell us a little about yourself."
"I don't really like talking about myself. Maybe you should interview Hunter. He LOVES to talk about himself."
* "Hunter wasn't available."
"Oh. Okay. Um … well, let’s see ... I’m a BMX racer. "
* "That sounds interesting. How successful are you?"
* "And now?"
* "What happened?"
"I think that might be classified as a spoiler. Besides, it’s sort of painful for me to talk about it. But I’d do the exact same thing all over again if I had to."
* "Where do you fit into the story? What should we know about you?"
"I guess you'd call me the "male protagonist" but I see myself as Channie's protector. Don't tell her I said that. She likes to believe she can take care of herself."
* "What do you think of the author? Be honest. We won't tell."
"I'm grateful she brought Channie into my life, but I don't understand why she has to make everything so freakin' hard. It breaks my heart that Channie had to choose between me and ... Oh, wait. That's another a spoiler. Sorry."
* "How do you feel about the story you're in?"
"Well, there’s never a dull moment. Although sometimes I wish there were."
* "Do you like being a character in the book?"
"What’s the alternative? Not existing?"
* "How do you see your future? Without giving anything away about the story, naturally."
"Channie will always be my first priority. Her safety above all else and then her happiness. But once that’s secured, I’d like to get my racing career back on track. There’s no way I’ll make the 2012 games in London, but there’s always Rio four years later."
* "What do you know about your author's plans? Can we expect to see you in any future stories?"
"She’s got a couple of other series she’s been working on but her readers can’t seem to get enough of Hunter Feenie -- go figure."
* "Let's say they make a movie about this book. Who do you want to play you, and why?"
"Who’s that guy they cast to play Gale in the Hunger Games?"
* "Liam Hemsworth?"
"Yeah, that’s the guy.
