About the Author: Tracy Young is President and self proclaimed “Chief Princess” of A Little Indulgence. She founded the company in 2006, after discovering a need for timeless and age appropriate children’s special occasion dresses. Tracy developed a line of communion dresses when a customer requested a white party dress for her daughter’s upcoming First Communion. A line of communion veils and dress shoes soon followed. Tracy decided to write a series of children's book as a way to share her knowledge and familiarize children with different special occasions. "A Little Guide to First Communion" is Tracy's second book.
Review: This is an adorable book! I was given the opportunity to review it through Mom Blog Society and even though it is geared for a girl, I thought it might make a good inspirational piece for teaching Drake about some aspects of our faith. We are Roman Catholic, so first communion is a HUGE deal. We have several years before Drake is ready for communion, but he LOVES books. This is one of those books that I can read to him and talk to him about the pictures now even though he doesn't understand it yet. He will be able to grow up and just understand our faith with very little work because we started early. The pictures are wonderfully artistic and detailed. He really enjoyed the colors and images. He's been to church with us a few times (not much because he won't sit still for more than a few minutes) and I think that some of the images in the book may have seemed familiar since he pointed to things that exist in our church.
The story of Seraphina getting her first communion is written out with just enough information that the child gets the idea of what is happening, but there is a lot of room for the parents to jump in and give more details. It gives a lot of room for you to explain your faith and that faith doesn't have to be Roman Catholic. Any faith that supports communion can use this wonderful story because Tracy Young (author) doesn't mention a specific faith in the story. Being Roman Catholic, I felt like it really was accenting the aspects of my faith and what is important for a young girl to know when she is about to receive first communion. I would love to see a second printing of this story where it focuses on a little boy since a boy will have no need for a dress or veil. After the children's story portion is complete, the back of the book has several pages outlining the importance of each item described in the story. This is how I knew that it wasn't just for Roman Catholics. The author addresses other faiths and how this book can be used for them as well. It also explains the different things that a little girl might want to wear or be required to wear for her special day. I had no idea that there are three different kinds of communion dresses, but Tracy explains each type of dress in a wonderfully understandable way. This book isn't just a good guide for the child to help understand what they need and why it is important, but also serves as a guide for the parents to make sure their daughter does what she needs to do and wears what she should wear. No one gets embarrassed and everyone knows what to do to just from this wonderful book. We will definitely be pulling this book out from time to time to teach Drake about communion as he gets older.
