My Affinity for the Underdog by Beck Sherman
I love underdogs, and as a writer of fiction, they will always have a place in my novels. Whether it’s a boxer from Philadelphia fighting against a Russian giant, a group of misfits trying to survive one long day of detention, or a boy just trying to find his way back to the future, they’re down on their luck, but their spirit is strong and worthy of 1000 champions.
The concept of the underdog has certainly infiltrated the minds and hearts of many artists and creators. Why is this? No doubt, a lot of artists can relate to them. They have struggled too, they feel misunderstood, they feel like small fish in a big pond, they know that to make it to where they want to be they’re going to have to push through, fight, believe. When they do sit down to create worlds, the stars are the bullied, the outcasts, the disenchanted, the strugglers, essentially themselves.
In Revamp, my protagonist, Emma, is strong but flawed. She’s dealing with the abandonment of her father, which manifests in trust issues. She’s odd. She talks to herself in the mirror, suffers from nightmares, has an incessant inner monologue, and her best friend is a dog. But in the worst of times, which have bite, she is a warrior and her quirks ensure her survival.
As shown in history, the underdog will prevail, in life and in art. I don’t believe that will ever change. So, to all the underdogs: crawl, suffer, starve, flail, fight, and be humble, and know that you inspire.

Desription: FOR THREE DAYS, IT WAS DARK.
News reporters scrambled. This was the biggest story to come along in weeks.
They called it a blackout.
The last one was in New York City in 2003, but this one was different, special, because the grids in six major cities across the country had been fried, kaput, see-you-next-Sunday. Everyone with some jurisdiction blamed each other, and when there was no one left to blame, terrorism rode in on its gallant steed.
It was the media’s fault. They were so busy stuffing fanatical Muslims with a penchant for Allah and decapitations down the American citizen’s throat, that they never saw it coming. I guess I shouldn’t be too hard on them.
They were partially right.
It was terror after all, but a whole new kind. And when the lights came back on, things had changed.
The dark had brought us visitors.
