Mother's Day Book Blast

April 30 - May 6
Hosted by eReading on the Cheap & Slap Dash Mom

Every Blog Participating is giving away a book or book related Prize (see below the rafflecopter form)! Happy Hopping!

Win The Star Trilogy by Donald Samson

My giveaway as part of the Mother's Day Book Blast is actually three books. I have read two of them and am currently working on the third book. You will be entering to win "The Dragon Boy", "The Dragon of Two Hearts", and "The Dragon, the Blade, and the Needle" all by Donald Samson and referred to as The Star Trilogy. The reason I have asked Donald Samson to sponsor this giveaway is because this series has won a Mom's Choice Award. They are wonderful books that all ages can appreciate. I figured that a mom could read them for herself (like me) or read them to her children for some of those mother/child bonding moments we so love. They would make great bedtime stories where you read one chapter a night before bed. The chapters aren't too long and if you find you are on a short chapter, just read them two! If you would like to check out my reviews of the first two books, you can find them at: Wordy Wednesday: The Dragon Boy and Wordy Wednesday: The Dragon of Two Hearts. By the way, these will all be shipped to you because you will be getting paperbacks. Open to US residents only! The winner will have 48 hours to respond to the winning email notification before a new winner is chosen. Now on to the giveaway!

Check out The Chapel Chronicles

Chapel Chronicles Picture
Title: Chapel Chronicles Volume One
Author: Emma T Capps
Desription: The Chapel Chronicles is a 44 page book of hand drawn, full-color comics, a weekly web comic, and a collection of greeting cards and collectibles. The Chapel Chronicles follows the adventures of an 11-year old girl named Chapel Smith as she navigates tween life with her own quirky brand of humor. Whether it’s clashes with her babysitter, struggles with household chores, finding a love of pop music, or an unexpected prickly companion, each comic delivers something delightfully unexpected. Chapel’s spunky and sweet wit make her a character appealing to fans at any stage of life. Chapel’s voice is also an authentic inside perspective of tween life because its author is also a teen, 15 year-old Emma T Capps, an award-winning artist, author, and cartoonist.

You can read Chapel comics at or at The Chapel Chronicles has been reviewed in a variety of national publications. Press reviews and high res downloadable images are available at Chapel Collectibles, including the comic book, greeting cards, charms, earrings, prints, and more are available for sale at

Chapel Chronicles Picture 1
Review: To start off with, WOW. For a 15 year old, this girl really has things worked out. The above picture is of the folder I received with everything for me to review. It cam with a Fact Sheet and Author Bio, a birthday post card, a thank you post card, a Father's Day greeting card, 4 high resolution comic strips, a personalized letter from Emma T Capps thanking me for doing this review (on her own Chapel Chronicles stationary), and the actual Chapel Chronicles Comic book (book 1). I was very surprised with how much thought has gone into this review package because it is honestly more than I have gotten from any other company/sponsor.

Chapel Chronicles Picture 2
Chapel Chronicles Picture 3

The above pictures are of the two post cards. I didn't take a picture of the greeting card because I was getting frustrated with the glare from my flash. Anyway, the quality of these cards are very much like something you would get out of an actual greeting card store. They aren't something that was printed off of a personal printer. The artwork is very crisp and neat. I actually am a big fan of the style of art that is the entirety of The Chapel Chronicles. I used to collect stuff like this when I was a kid and teenager. I think it is very original. It looks professionally done with a child like quality.

Chapel Chronicles Picture 4
Chapel Chronicles Picture 5
Chapel Chronicles Picture 6
Chapel Chronicles Picture 7
The four images above are the four high resolution pictures. You can see that one of them is her Christmas comic and one is for Halloween. The other two are about music and looking for a confiscated iPod. Seeing as Chapel is 11, this is probably something that happens a lot. I really like the Halloween comic. Chapel (and I would also assume Emma T Capps) loves anime. Chapel has three costume choices and decides on Cardcaptor Sakura (from an anime I am not familiar with). What I find funny is her mom talking in the background asking why she is "cosplaying Tomoyo-Chan." To be honest, I had to have my husband explain cosplaying to me a couple months ago, so to see it in this comic series is just hilarious to me. I would normally have just said roleplaying in the past.

Chapel Chronicles Picture 8
Chapel Chronicles Picture 9
Finally, we have the actual comic book. From the glare you see on the first picture of the cover, you can see that it actually came in the plastic that normally covers comic books in the store. I was actually very happy to see that. This kept is doubly protected since it came in the folder. It only took me a few minutes to read through the entire book. It has four chapters: Chapel vs. Fred, Chapel's Chores, The Gaga Saga, and The Elegance of the Hedgehog. The first chapter is dedicated to games. These comic strips cover Chapel playing games like Risk, Chess, and Battleship. She plays several with her babysitter Fred, but also with her best friend. I find it interesting that Chapel normally loses, but something funny always happens along the way. The second chapter covers things that Chapel is supposed to do. She does things like clean her room, homework, and washing dishes. These strips depict the typical teenager that always gets distracted and makes messes. The third chapter is about Chapel's obsession with Lady Gaga. Now, Emma T Capps says that she herself is not obsessed with Lady Gaga, but Chapel absolutely adores her. It features funny clothes and disagreements with her mom about Justin Bieber. The final chapter is about Chapel's beloved pet hedgehog. It starts with her wanting a dog, but when she goes to the Humane Society to get one, she comes home with a cuddly hedgehog instead.

Overall, I found the comics very entertaining and enjoyable. It's appropriate for any age, but I think a young teenager would be thrilled to get this. Since I am going to be switching the purpose of my blog to book reviews instead of doing everything under the sun, I hope that I am able to review book 2 when it comes out.

Ok Ok...Maybe Not Quitting Completely

Yesterday I posted that I am going to give up blogging in order to focus on my health more. Well my husband and I have been talking about it and as he pointed out, a lot of my time is used up by promoting giveaways. He also pointed out that I am always so happy when I write book reviews and get feedback from the authors of those books. I really enjoy doing book tours and being a part of Promotional Book Tours. What gets me down is when I get a product to review and can't find the time to get it done in a timely fashion or I end up getting like four items to review at the same time which all have giveaways attached to them. They start stockpiling on me. I spend hours promoting and listing on giveaway linkies that I could be spending one hour on exercising and the rest on reading a book. With that, I am just going to change the focus of my blog to books and book related things. I know there are a lot of book bloggers out there, but this at least makes me happy from time to time and I still will be able to get my exercising in. Actually I might be able to read and do cardio at the same time. No time wasted in that event. This post is just to update my readers. I may find an item to review from time to time that isn't a book if I get the opportunity and really don't want to pass it up. FYI everyone!

Disneynature’s Newest True Life Adventure
Celebrates its $10.6 Million Opening-Weekend
Box Office by Extending Benefit to Jane Goodall Institute

BURBANK, Calif. (April 25, 2012) – Swinging into theaters April 20 with a $10.6 million opening-weekend performance, “Chimpanzee” proved so popular among audiences that Disneynature is extending the “See ‘Chimpanzee,’ Save Chimpanzees” conservation initiative for a second week. For every moviegoer who sees “Chimpanzee” through May 3, 2012, Disneynature will make a donation to the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) through the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund to protect chimpanzees today and tomorrow.

“In theaters just five days, ‘Chimpanzee’ has already given us a lot to celebrate,” said Alan Bergman, president, The Walt Disney Studios. “Led by a young chimpanzee named Oscar, ‘Chimpanzee’ has won the hearts of audiences nationwide. It’s because of that success that we decided to extend our program with the Jane Goodall Institute.”

“See ‘Chimpanzee,’ Save Chimpanzees”—initially slated for the film’s opening week through April 26—will continue through the film’s second week till May 3—a first-ever extension to a Disneynature conservation program.

The news was well received by Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace. “We couldn’t be happier to extend this collaboration to help the Jane Goodall Institute better protect chimpanzees and the places they call home,” she said. “A film like ‘Chimpanzee’ helps spread the passion we have for these extraordinary beings, sharing the truly relatable moments experienced by Oscar and his fellow chimpanzees in a way that will hopefully inspire audiences to continue their support long after the movie ends.”

Rated G by the MPAA, “Chimpanzee” is in theaters now.

Disneynature takes moviegoers deep into the forests of Africa with “Chimpanzee,” a new True Life Adventure introducing an adorable young chimpanzee named Oscar and his entertaining approach to life in a remarkable story of family bonds and individual triumph. Oscar’s playful curiosity and zest for discovery showcase the intelligence and ingenuity of some of the most extraordinary personalities in the animal kingdom. Working together, Oscar’s chimpanzee family—including his mom, Isha, and the group’s savvy leader, Freddy — navigates the complex territory of the forest. The world is a playground for little Oscar and his fellow young chimpanzees, who’d rather make mayhem than join their parents for an afternoon nap. But when Oscar’s family is confronted by a rival band of chimpanzees, he is left to fend for himself until a surprising ally steps in and changes his life forever. Directed by Alastair Fothergill (“African Cats” and “Earth”) and Mark Linfield (“Earth”), and narrated by Tim Allen (Disney•Pixar’s “Toy Story 3,” ABC’s “Last Man Standing”), “Chimpanzee” is in theaters now. Founded in 1977, the Jane Goodall Institute continues Dr. Goodall’s pioneering research on chimpanzee behavior started more than 50 years ago—research that transformed scientific perceptions of the relationship between humans and animals. Today, the Institute is a global leader in the effort to protect chimpanzees and their habitats. It also is widely recognized for establishing innovative community-centered conservation and development programs in Africa, and Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots, the global environmental and humanitarian program for youth of all ages, which has groups in more than 120 countries. The Walt Disney Company has since its beginnings demonstrated a commitment to the environment that continues to this day. Since its inception in 1995, the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund (DWCF) has carried this legacy forward through connections made to inspire people and partnerships to protect the world’s wildlife. The DWCF annual grants program has made a global impact on efforts to expand scientific knowledge, influence leaders to take conservation action and engage communities through education and sustainable approaches to conservation. To date, the DWCF has granted more than $14 million to more than 800 projects in 110 countries, including funding to support lions, cheetahs and chimpanzee conservation. The DWCF also maintains the Rapid Response Fund, which has provided emergency funding to more than 100 relief efforts. To learn more about Disney’s focus on nature visit

Disneynature was launched in April 2008. Its mission is to bring the world’s top nature filmmakers together to share a wide variety of wildlife stories on the big screen in order to engage, inspire, and educate theatrical audiences everywhere. Walt Disney was a pioneer in wildlife filmmaking, producing 13 True-Life Adventure motion pictures between 1948 and 1960, which earned eight Academy Awards®. The first three Disneynature films, “Earth,” “Oceans” and “African Cats” are three of the top four highest overall grossing feature-length nature films to date, with “Earth” garnering a record-breaking opening weekend for the genre. Conservation has been a key pillar of the label, and Disneynature films empower the audience to help make a difference. Through donations tied to opening week attendance for all three films, Disneynature has planted. 3 million trees in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, established 40,000 acres of marine protected area in The Bahamas and protected 65,000 acres of savanna in Kenya.

Giving up my blog

If you have taken a look at my list of upcoming giveaways today, you will see that I have one listed and that is it. I am giving up my blog. I may have two more giveaways that will happen just because I am obligated to do them, but they will be very quick giveaways. I have decided that I need to take nap times for exercising instead of blogging. I just don't have enough time in the day to do everything my blog requires and to get in some form of exercise. I dislike how I look and need to lose about 30 lbs. More importantly, I actually think my husband thinks I need to lose it now too. He loves me, but I don't think he's all that attracted to me in my current state any more. I don't want to jeopardize my relationship with him by not taking care of myself like I should be doing, so bye bye blog. It really has been turning into a job more than my escape lately anyway. I am not saying that it is going away today, but I will not be posting as regularly and will ultimately stop posting after mid May. I am sorry to my loyal followers, but family comes first. Thanks for making my short stent in blogging so successful.

Wordy Wednesday: Darkness Becomes Her

Darkness Becomes Her Picture
Title: Darkness Becomes Her
Series: Offspring Series
Author: Jaime Rush
Publisher: Avon
Desription: A man beyond redemption. A woman beyond hope. And an enemy who will either kill them...or bring them back from the edge.

Lachlan McLeod has a mission: find the beast who put his brother into a coma. He'll start with Jessie Bellandre, his brother's girlfriend, who's harboring a dark, dangerous secret that could get them all killed. But as they plumb the depths of Darkness, and the light he didn't know existed in his own dark heart, not falling in love with her will be as hard as staying alive.

Review: First thing to say about this book, Not recommended for a young audience. I would say late teens and up depending on their maturity level. That said, I LOVED IT. I read it in less than 24 hours total and that was while watching my son. I could not put it down. I had to read it on my iPod because my nook wouldn't recognize it for whatever reason, but it was so good that I didn't mind. Also, this was an ARC book so it has not been finalized for production. I have one suggestion in that department.

This story takes on three different perspectives throughout. You see things through Lachlan, Jessie, and Russel's eyes. This happens through out the entire book and sometimes switches perspectives in each chapter. The hardest part about the read was realizing when the perspective was shifting. It could have just been how the iPod viewed the story, but I think that there needs to be some kind of line to split the sections to let the reader know that you are changing to someone else's view point. Most of the time it is very easy to recognize that you have had a scene change, but every now and then I would have to pause and reread a paragraph just to make sure I knew who was telling the story at that time. It's really the only complaint I have at all about it.

To the story...It is hot hot hot! You will be surprised by the way the events turn out and what an amazing job Jaime Rush does at character development. Lachlan is a Scottish decended barbarian at times who has turned monk after an act of violence he cannot forgive himself for. His part in the story is of a man who is trying to regain his honor through discipline and the absence of temptations. Jessie is the one tormented by Darkness, a supernatural element from another dimension that has been passed on to her from her father, a being from another dimension. He mother was killed when she was ten, her father killed (as far as she knew) and her uncle's soul living in her father's body. She loves life even though she lives in constant fear as her uncle has been hunting her down for the last two years. She indulges herself whenever she has the money to do so and feels this driving need to help others even when she feels that there is no help for her. Finally, Russel is Jessie's uncle trapped in her father's body. Russel is trying to get Jessie in order to reincarnate Jessie's mother, the true love of his life. Jessie is unaware of what is driving her uncle through most of the story and therefore believes he is just out to kill her, which really isn't that far from the truth. I won't tell you about that because that's best read in context of the entire story.

Jessie is hiding in the town near Lachlan's home and actually is "dating" Lachlan's brother Magnus at the start of the story. I say dating in quotation marks because really Magnus is pursuing, but they haven't actually dated yet. Jessie had the intention to date Magnus for a short period of time, but nothing serious because she fears the Darkness inside of her would eventually kill anyone she fell for. Events take a huge turn when Russel kills Magnus and forces Jessie to use her Darkness powers to bring him back to life, which is done at the insistence of Lachlan who has no knowledge of what Darkness is. Magnus is out of commission the rest of the story after this, but alive. This event cause Lachlan to insist that Jessie stays with him while they find a way to destroy Russel. Lachlan insists that Jessie is no longer alone in this fight and it is his responsibility to protect his brother's girlfriend so that once Magnus awakes, they may continue their relationship without fear of the future. What Lachlan doesn't realize is that Jessie has more in common with him than he could possibly imagine and he finds himself strongly attracted to her. He also doesn't expect the return of the attraction from her. There are several very intense scenes that will drive you wild. They are not like any scenes I have ever read in another book. I applaud Jaime's creativity in that department.

What happens as they learn more about the Darkness within Jessie? What powers does Lachlan posses? Are they destined to be together and defeat Russel? Will Jessie ever see her father's soul returned to his body again? You will have to read the story to find out when it is released! You will love it!

Wordy Wednesday: The Ruins of Noe Book Tour

Ruins of Noe Picture
Title: The Ruins of Noe
Series: Fairy Tales from the White Forest
Author: Danika Dinsmore
Publisher: en theos press
Review of Brigitta of the White Forest (book one):

Desription: Brigitta’s adventures continue when the balance of the White Forest is disturbed and the Elders lose contact with the Ethereals. Against their advice, High Priestess Ondelle asks Brigitta to accompany her to the old faerie ruins of Noe to find a way to reconnect with the Ancients.

What they discover when they arrive is something they never learned from any faerie tale. Why had this dark secret been kept from them? Why in the name of Faweh had the Ancients left some faeries behind?

Brigitta and Ondelle are caught in a dangerous feud between two factions of feral faeries whose leaders will stop at nothing to access what little sorcery Noe has left.

Review: If you read the first book in this series, Brigitta of the White Forest, you know that this story is based on a fairy world where the main character Brigitta is a fairy destined to be a leader among all fairies. Brigitta's first adventure had her saving the lives of all the fairies in The White Forest from a curse of stone. Her adventure took her out of the White Forest (her magically protected home) and into the Dark Forest in search of an exiled fairy Hrathgar. Upon saving the White Forest, Brigitta learns that she has been destiny marked to be an Elder fairy on the fairy council. Her destiny is bound to make her life complicated and either full of adventure or boredom governing her world. She is torn on whether she feels like her destiny marking is appropriate for her of if she will somehow change her destiny in the days to come (having learned that destinies change as parts are fulfilled).

Coming into this second book, you learn that Brigitta is bound to lead a life full of adventures. Since she has left the White Forest and survived, she is now considered to have worldly experience. She is actually better equipped than all the other fairies to travel beyond the White Forest whenever the need arises. As it turns out, this story requires her to travel to the fairies' legendary home of Noe, which is now the Ruins of Noe after the Great World Cry (i.e. terrible cataclysm that drove the fairies from their home into the White Forest). Why on earth would Brigitta need to travel here? It appears that the Ancients (the original fairies who are with them in spirit) have adandoned the White Forest. Without the Ancients, the souls of the dead will not move on and new babies will be born without destinies, if any new babies are born at all. Brigitta must travel to the home of the Ancients to try to reconnect with them in order to gain their favor once again. She travels with her high Priestess Ondelle and quickly discovers that this trip really was something she should have done alone. They are captured the "left behind" fairies and Ondelle is imprisoned. It is up to Brigitta to find a way to save Ondelle, free all the fairies from their oppressive rulers so that they may go to the White Forest with their kin, and reconnect to the Ancients in order to save the White Forest yet again.

Brigitta learns a lot about herself along the way and finds that her destiny may be even more tumultuous than first imagined. Her big heart and compassion will lead her into trouble and help guide her in the right direction for all. While she is not able to save all the fairies in the Ruins Of Noe, she helps them find their true path. It is a great story. If you liked the first one, you will love the second one. I was left feeling like a third book is on the way and can't wait. Neither book ends with a cliffhanger, but I tell you what, the end of this book will give you goosebumps. I loved it.

Review: I do not eat oatmeal a lot. I just get this craving for it periodically and to be honest, I am normally disappointed with it when I do get it. I guess I am not very good at making it. What I have never considered was buying pre-made oatmeal. Well...Other than the Gerber ones that I attempted to get Drake to eat. I say attempted because even I found them gross. What I have noticed is that oatmeal tends to be either really chunky as in you can chew each individual oat, or it is really mushy like drinking a liquid almost or eating baby food. I have had good oatmeal in restaurants though so I know what good stuff tastes like.

Seneca Farms Oatmeal Picture 2
Seneca Farms Oatmeal comes in little individual containers that you just heat in the microwave and serve. They are designed to come out the perfect consistency and texture. I found this to be very true. It wasn't too mushy and it wasn't chunky. The oats were not whole pieces that you could pick out but rather a little ground or broken which I assume is from the cooking process. It has really good flavor too. Some oatmeal can taste too much like grains and not so much like whatever flavor you put in them. In my case, I tasted the Apple Cinnamon and Vanilla Peach.

The Apple Cinnamon I found to have a very unique taste. It tasted like the apples were fire grilled. There was a hint of wood smoke taste to them. If you think it odd that I could pick something like that out, it is because I love the fire grilled foods at Red Lobster during Lent. It just have this unique flavor that I really enjoy and I found that same flavor in the apple chunks in the oatmeal. Also the apple pieces were actually big enough to chew and taste, obviously. A lot of oatmeal has pieces of fruit that are so tiny they might as well not be there. This oatmeal has nice sized pieces, but also not so big that it overpowers the oatmeal. It's also VERY easy to make. I was very pleasantly surprised.

Now I am not a person who likes peach flavoring. I don't like peaches themselves because I can normally taste the peach fuzz on them even when you think there isn't any fuzz left. The Vanilla Peach did NOT have the peach fuzz taste. I was very happy to find that out. The peach pieces also were not hard or too slimy. Those are my other complaints about eating peaches. Again I tasted something that resembled a fire smoke flavor which was very tasty. I actually really enjoyed this even though I had anticipated not liking it. Now I wish I could say the same for Drake since part of why I got these to test was to try to get him to eat it. So far anything that is oatmeal goes in his mouth and right back out with a really sour face. Oh well!

How Do You Sleep Baby Dolphin Picture2

Review: This is an adorable book about a little boy who has a lovey Dolphin. He wants to know how dolphins sleep and if it is at all similar to how he goes to sleep. It is a poem that begins with the little boy getting ready for bed. As he is falling asleep, he asks his dolphin lovey questions about how he might go to bed. He asks if his mommy reads him a story, does he wish on stars, does he brush his teeth, etc? All questions that a little kid would wonder about any animal. What do animals do to get ready for bed when no one is looking. The wonderful part about the story is that the second half is the dolphin telling the little boy how he goes to sleep. This is filled with actual facts about dolphins so the poem isn't just a nice bedtime story for your child, but it is actually educational as well. The end of the book even comes with a fact list about dolphins so you can continue the education with your little one.

How Do You Sleep Baby Dolphin Picture3

One of the best characteristics of this story is the artwork. It is all hand drawn and colored as if a 10 year old colored it. The illustrations are good enough to tell exactly what is going on in the story, but for a child that is not coloring very well or just learning, it shows them not to be ashamed of their work. It might even encourage them to aspire to be illustrators themselves some day since this work is a published book. My son loved the story. He recognized the fish right away and was pointing them out on every page. I wish I could have gotten apicture of that, but when I let him take the book so I could try to take picture, he started bending pages. I was afraid he would ruin it, so I had to give up on that idea. Instead, I took a picture of the last page in the book. This page was his favorite because it was all fish, dolphins, and coral. I sat there with me just pointing to each of the different fish and basically asking me to say "fish" over and over. It was very cute. I am sure that some day I will have to answer all the same types of questions about his Gorilla lovey.

Potty Hero Picture2

Review: This is such a cute book! I was rather surprised at how well they were able to merge the picture of my son into the images of the story. You can see from the cover what a good job they did.

Bookadoo Picture2

The story is all about a little boy (can be made for a little girl too) whose mommy says he can't go out to play until he goes wee-wee. He is tempted to go outside by many animal friends instead of going potty. Each time an animal asks him to come play and to talks about a different game, the little boy responds with the same thing. He says he can't come out to play because he's taking a wee-wee and not to rush him. I am not writing the exact phrases used.
Bookadoo Picture3
In the end, the little boy goes potty and is able to go outside to play. I really like how imaginative all the pages are. There are lots of toys and animals that kids can recognize and would want to play with instead of going potty. The story shows how there are lots of things that can tempt a little kid not go potty and how the kid actually ignores them until he goes. The only thing that I wish were different about this book is that it came in cardboard. I was going over it with Drake and he tried to turn the pages. He almost ripped one because he doesn't have the finesse yet to turning non-cardboard book pages. Now, Drake is only 19 months old. We are starting a little early, but I find it easier if we start things early so he can get used to stuff earlier before he is expected to do them. I honestly don't know if my method works at all, but it is what I have been trying to do with him. Therefore, we are going over the book now and in a few months we will start trying to potty train him. He has lots of examples to learn from. We have never closed the bathroom door on him in our own home so that he could actually see us go potty on the toilet. The result so far is that he actually knows that toilet paper goes in the toilet. I think it is a good start.

The Ruins of Noe by Danika Dinsmore

A child born with no destiny: one of many signs that the White Forest faeries had lost touch with the Ethereals, the Ancient Ones. High Priestess Ondelle is convinced by an old proverb that one faerie is fated to travel to the former home of the Ancients, the Ruins of Noe, to find the answer. That faerie, she believes, is Brigitta. Ondelle and Brigitta set off to save their forest once again, but when they arrive in Noe they discover something they never learned from any faerie tale. Why had this dark secret been kept from them? Why in the name of Faweh had the Ancients left some faeries behind?

The good thing about Plato Pet Treats, say, your favorite pair of slippers—is how they can contribute to your dog's health.
