Shifty Business 1

Title: Shifty Business
Series: Bend-Bite-Shift Trilogy
Author: Olivia Hardin
Publisher: Olivia Hardin
Description: Gerry Hinton thought she had the perfect career as an operative for the Company. Her next assignment should have been another "mission accomplished", but hell was delivering hand baskets that day.

When a little girl gives a mysterious silver box to Gerry, her world self-destructs. Suddenly under constant mental attacks, the only person who can save her is her partner, Nicky--but nothing comes without a cost. Secrets buried deep in the past begin to rise, threatening everything she holds dear.

If she can't out run her past, can she save her future?

Review: I have read this entire trilogy and honestly had forgotten some of the details when I opened up this book. I am happy to say that even if you read Bitten Shame immediately after it was released, you will have no trouble diving into Shifty Business. I could not put this book down and my poor son was very mad at me for it. It took me 3 hours to read it. I just wanted to know that badly how it was going to end. Speaking of which, if you went to the release day party, you know that even though this is a trilogy, Olivia Hardin has more in store for us.

This book focused on Gerry, the shapeshifting witch and her obscure relationship with Nicky, the dhampir. You can tell in the previous books that there is something odd about their relationship, but I was surprised to find out that they were secretly married. During one of their missions, Gerry comes in contact with a little girl whom they are trying to rescue from being sold into slavery (i.e. food for a vampire). The mission goes completely awry. Gerry walks out of it without a scratch on her, but suddenly becomes comatose. Nicky is forced to whisk her away and to hide this little silver box in a place that even Gerry cannot find (she's the one who gave it to him). He is at his wits end on how to wake Gerry up from her coma when a voodoo lady finds him. She tells him exactly what needs to be done so that Gerry can be awakened. You will be shocked at what he must do and why. I refuse to share that information, but it was pretty amazing...and weird.

Once awake, Gerry is forced to dig into her past in order to save her future. Well really it is to save not just her future, but pretty much every supernatural child out there, Nicky's, herself, and everyone in their tight little group. She must face her twin sister Dy while maintaining her very fragile marriage. Will she finally tell everyone her deep dark secrets? Will she and Nicky ever get past the lies? Why has her powers gone completely out of control? Read to find out and be sure to check out the epilogue. Rooney!!! That's all I have to say about it.

Interview with the author, Olivia Hardin:
  1. Gerry has a big secret that we learn about in this book. How was she able to convince people that she was a shape shifting witch for so long?

She certainly does have a big secret.  You might remember that in book one Kent suggests her shapeshifting abilities are just a “glamour” which was important to me because he was really just guessing about her.  I think Gerry made sure her crew saw what she wanted them to see in her.

  2. How did Gerry gain power before/after she was married?

Hmmm… how do I answer this without giving too much away?  I think Gerry was able to build her power before she was married by absorbing it from people around her.  She was fortified and even her sister I think probably “fed” her in some way.  After she married, Nicky became to source of her strength.  He gave her everything she needed and of course it was his love that ultimately helped her get strong enough to win in the end.

  3. How did the voodoo woman find Nicky in New Orleans? How did she know so much?

I really loved Mere Owa.  She was a feisty little character.  I read about how Louisiana voodoo became a blending of African beliefs – many brought there by Haiti –  and Catholicism.  Nicky made a “prayer” for help and even though he wasn’t the believer that Gerry was, somehow Owa “heard” his plea.  The way I see it, Mere Owa is probably just as old as Langston is… which is pretty old.  So being a woman and having been around a long time, I decided it just made sense that she could use her magic to figure out about Gerry.

  4. Will we learn what the Women want from their captured vampire in Roon's story?

I think that will be a BIG part of Sweet Magic Song which will be the first book in my For Love of Fae Trilogy.  Seems like Belle is probably tied up a lot deeper into the Org than we might have thought and so she’s going to need lots of help from that incorrigible faery Roon!

  5. What made Gerry so special that she was able to resist evil and believe in God?

What makes any of us able to resist the dark?  I think it is a person’s choices, their will, the goodness they absorb from others that allows them to be good.  Gerry had a special bond with her parents and that was a huge part of how her character was shaped.  I think some people are just in too much a hurry to get the things they want and they “sell” a part of themselves to gain it… just the way Dy did.

  6. Shameless plug time! What can we expect to see from you in the future?

Ooo!  I love this part.  I have so many irons in the fire and I’m so excited about all of them.  Right now I’m finishing up a contemporary romance called All for Hope through Hayson Publishing.  Right after that I’m going to get back to Tangled Up in Trouble, the second in my MAUCs Series.  And then later this year I’ll start the For Love of Fae Trilogy!  Lots of exciting stuff going on!
