Enchanted Hearts 1

Enchanted Hearts
Title: Enchanted Hearts
Series: Enchanted Series, Book 1
Author: Belinda Boring
Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform
Description: How do you choose between mere moments and a lifetime? Aithne was raised on fairytales, spending hours daydreaming about meeting one of the elusive Fae. Little did she know, hidden in the shadows, a Fae Prince stood watching. All it took was one glance and Hadrian became enchanted, unable to stay away. Revealing his presence, Aithne's life was forever changed as her childhood fantasies of magic became a reality. With each encounter, Aithne fell deeper in love and even though she knew Hadrian couldn't offer her the future she craved, it was enough. That was until William, the local blacksmith's son and friend, stepped forward. Wearing his own heart on his sleeve, and eager to claim Aithne as his wife, there was nothing William wouldn't do for the girl he loved. Even if it meant risking it all at the Midsummer Night's festival.

Review: I am a huge fan of Belinda Boring, and this book is just another reason why. I literally read it in about six hours. I find her imagery amazing and she has a way to invoke the feelings of the characters in the reader. It's what I call fully immersive.

The story is about a love triangle between Aithne, William, and Hadrian. Aithne and William are both humans who grew up together and have been in love with each other without actually knowing it. Hadrian is a Fae Prince who is completely enthralled with Aithne. When they meet, Aithne falls instantly in love with him. He is the embodiment of her childhood fantasies. When she discovers that he is in love with her as well, she thinks her dreams have come true, that he will whisk her away to the Fae Realm to be his for all eternity. However, she soon learns that she could never live with the Fae. It's a realm of magic and only magical beings can survive there. Things only get crazier when she learns about William's affections toward her. She is torn between her childhood fantasies and a man that can give her the home and family she only just realized that she wanted. You will NOT be disappointed with this story!

The Emerald Tablet 1

Legends of Amun Ra 1
Title: Legends of Amun Ra: The Emerald Tablet
Author: Joshua Silverman
Publisher: Enchanted Forest Press
Description: Buried beneath the Egyptian sands lies a relic from a society whose knowledge has been lost to Earth for over 5,000 years. It lies in wait for the boy who will use it to save a distant world. On that world, a slave girl who is more than she appears waits for a destiny she cannot imagine. But when an ancient foes rises from the ashes, they will be brought together by forces that neither understands. Follow Leoros, a 13 year-old boy who dreams of being like the heroes in the comic books he reads, as he fights to unlock the secrets of the universe. Go with Atlantia, a 14 year-old girl whose mysterious powers grow stronger as she discovers her destiny. When the darkness comes, do you stand and fight or do you run and hide? An enemy with the power of dark magic - A mentor assassinated - Betrayal by an ally - A fight for the future - A final sacrifice. Will you join them? Or will you join the darkness? DO YOU DARE?

Excerpt: Leoros has been waiting for hours. In that time, the old man hasn’t moved.

He sits there like a Greek statute. Leoros abruptly stands in frustration, tired of waiting.

“I can’t wait forever. No offense, but you look like you’ve been here your whole life. I didn’t come here for enlightenment; I came here to help save Thoth, to save Atlantia. That’s all that matters to me.”

The old man looks at him. “Oh, I don’t doubt that, Leoros. But you must realize that saving Thoth is meaningless, despite what matters most to you.

The only thing that truly matters is your connection with the universe and its spiritual elements. Until you can understand that, you can’t save anything.”

Leoros scowls incredulously, his brows arched in anger. He grunts in frustration, angered he’s not able to make the old man comprehend the gravity of the situation.

“You don’t understand. I was dying,” Leoros says emphatically. He pounds the marble bench with his fist for emphasis. “If I don’t stop Osiris, he’ll kill everyone. He’ll kill Atlantia.”

The old man shrugs his shoulders. “Everyone dies eventually.”

Leoros scoffs, then walks around the perimeter of the room. His eyes find twelve crystal doors surrounding him. He’s been sitting here for hours.

In that time, he never paid attention to them. Perhaps the doors have to do with what is going on here, perhaps they are the key to this whole mess. He wonders if the spirits enter the chamber through these twelve archways.

Feeling the old man’s watchful eyes on the back of his head, he approaches one of the doors. He feels the icy coolness of the crystal. It glimmers, reflecting and refracting the light and colors of the room.

He moves back, trying to get a full picture of the symbol in detail. He counts thirteen equal circles with lines from their centers extending out to another other twelve circles. Six circles are placed in a hexagonal pattern around a central circle, with six more extending out along the same radial lines. When viewed as a whole, the picture is inspiring. Leoros can’t help but feel a spiritual presence as he gets closer to the doors, as if some divinity was touching him.

An adjacent crystal door bears a striking engraving. It looks like a flower is engraved into the door. It is engraved with multiple circles overlapping one another. The center of each circle is on the circumference of the six surrounding circles of the same diameter. He swivels to face the old man.

“What do I have to do? Pick a door? Is that it? What do the symbols mean?”

“They mean whatever you want them to mean, whatever your heart tells you that they mean. That one,” the old man indicates to the first door Leoros visited, “is called Metatron’s Cube. It is a very powerful symbol if used properly.”

“And this one,” Leoros asks, pointing the door he’s standing before.

“The Flower of Life,” the old man says with a smile.

Leoros looks back to the engraving. “The flower of life,” he whispers.

Then, to the old man, he asks, “But what do they mean?”

The old man shrugs his head. “The gods made this world in balance.

Everything has an opposite. If you look closely, that pattern is embedded in everything right down to the shell of the snail crawling along the ground.”

“So how do I open the door?” Leoros asks, as he absentmindedly reaches out, touching Metatron’s Cube. The engraving lights up red. The interior of the intricate pattern is filled by a black liquid, making the pattern protrude. In a flash, the now black engraving is lit on fire, burning the crystal door.

A sudden blast of black energy rockets from the engraving, knocking Leoros back to the old man. He slams against the marble floor, the wind knocked out of him. He takes a few minutes to reassemble what happened.

One minute the engraving of Metatron’s Cube was serene and still, embedded within the crystal door. The next, it looked as if it was filled with energy. In an instant, Leoros was thrust back twenty paces. He doesn’t understand what went wrong; he is, after all, the child of the prophecy.

He should be able to open these doors.

He rolls onto his side, uses his knee as leverage. The old man looks amused.

“What’s so funny?” Leoros gripes.

“I told you that you weren’t ready. It’s not about power,” the old man laughs.

Pregnancy is kicking my butt

I just wanted to post a quick note about what is happening with me. Since getting pregnant, I have been perpetually sick. I am sick all day every day. I am planning to call the doctor today about it since I am living on cottage cheese and crackers. Even water has me feeling horrible. Anyway, the main reason I am telling you is that I might not have a post every day for a while. Looking at the computer for long periods of time gives me massive headaches which lead to nausea. I apologize for the inconsistency, but I hope you understand.

Sgeulachd ni sinn na’s mò, Caledonian proverb
“Stories make us greater.”

Stories entertain us. Stories enlighten us. Stories challenge and frighten us. Stories take us places we have never been and show us people we have never known. Stories reinforce our beliefs; stories teach us to respect our neighbors’ beliefs. Stories remind us of the past, that we may be wary of the future. Stories reveal to us our familiar world in unfamiliar ways. Stories prompt us to grow and adapt and evolve.

Stories make us greater.

One of the greatest stories in the history of literature involves a man with a vision to unite his people against all who would strive to plunder and destroy their way of life. This man was blessed with staunch allies and cursed with bitter rivals. This man sought neither glory nor accolades, though he would win both through his battlefield victories. This man sought no bedchamber conquests, though no shortage of women would offer themselves to him. In the secret depths of his soul, this man sought only the one woman who could help him usher his vision for a united land into reality.

For centuries, literature has named this man Arthur.

For decades, I have named the woman Gyanhumara.

Their courage, their wisdom, their mistakes, their strength, and their love would forge the destiny of their world.

Their story makes us greater.

Title: Dawnflight
Series: The Dragon's Dove Chronicles, Book 1
Author: Kim Headlee
Publisher: Lucky Bat Books
Description: Gyanhumara “Gyan” nic Hymar is a Caledonian chieftainess by birth, a warrior and leader of warriors by training, and she is betrothed to Urien map Dumarec, a son of her clan’s deadliest enemy, by right of Arthur the Pendragon’s conquest of her people. For the sake of peace, Gyan is willing to sacrifice everything...perhaps even her very life, if her foreboding about Urien proves true.

Arthur map Uther is the bastard son of two worlds, Roman by his father and Brytoni by his mother. Denied hereditary rulership by the elders of Chieftainess Ygraine’s clan, Arthur has followed Uther’s path to become Dux Britanniarum, the Pendragon: supreme commander of the northern Brytoni army. The Caledonians, Scots, Saxons, and Angles keep him too busy to dwell upon his loneliness...most of the time.

When Gyan and Arthur meet, each recognize within the other their soul’s mate. The treaty has preserved Gyan’s ancient right to marry any man, providing he is a Brytoni nobleman—but Arthur does not qualify. And the ambitious Urien, Arthur’s greatest political rival, shall not be so easily denied. If Gyan and Arthur cannot prevent Urien from plunging the Caledonians and Brytons back into war, their love will be doomed to remain unfulfilled forever.

Whipped Wednesday: Linguine Alfredo #GERD #WeightWatchers #Recipe

Whipped Wednesday

Weight Watchers

Linguine Alfredo

A classic dish that has been made weight watcher friendly. I have to say that I did not make it exactly like the recipe I found, so I will give you the recipe that I actually made. The original recipe called for linguine, but didn't say if it should be flour, wheat, or something else. I decided to make it with Ronzoni Garden Delight Fettuccine (partly because I couldn't find whole wheat linguine). It was a very yummy dish. The way I made it, it was 10 PointsPlus per serving and it makes 4 servings.

1. Preheat the oven to 350°.

Review: Here are the questions I ask myself after having ate something with the answers relating to this recipe. I hope no one gets offended by these, but when thinking about your GERD, these are valid concerns.

  1. Did it keep me awake at night?
  2. Did I wake up in the morning with a gas bubble or diarrhea?
  3. Was I nauseous or have an upset stomach in the morning?
  4. Did I burp it up all the next day or have heartburn?

With these answers in mind I would say that this is a pretty good GERD-Friendly Weight Watchers Recipe. I would rate it a 2 out of 5 on the "It's Gonna Kill Me" Scale.

#BookReview: Love and Blood by Jessica Gibson

Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links.

Love and Blood
Title: Love and Blood
Series: Blood Ties, Book 1
Author: Jessica Gibson
Publisher: Jessica Gibson
Description: Bronwyn Fitzgibbons was young and reckless. It was easy for Ronan to steal her human life and make her a vampire. She ran, but she never forgot him--or how he made her feel.

Rider saved Bronwyn from the new life she loathed and the new self she detested. His love restored her sanity.

Now Ronan is back to claim her. She struggles like hell against him, but she cannot deny the overwhelming power of her maker. Will Bronwyn surrender to the one who could possess her utterly? Or can she find the strength to choose the one who loves her as she is?

Review: I have read several books by Jessica Gibson at this point. Normally I would rate her books at least a 4 out of 5, but I really felt like I was missing a lot of information in this one. Of course, I totally forgot that while this is book one in the series, she did go back to write a prequel. Probably if I had read that one first, I might not feel the way I do about this one. I just felt like I needed more history about why Bronwyn was running from Ronan through this book and why she was with Rider. All three of them are vampires. Ronan is Bronwyn's sire. She had been completely in love with him until one day she met Rider and ran away with him. That's pretty much all you know until this story starts fifteen years later. This book is all about Bronwyn trying to decide between Rider and Ronan, two men she is completely in love with but she finds herself sharing her bed with both of them (not at the same exact time). She picks one man. She tells the other to leave, but he refuses. His constant vigilance gives her reason to believe that maybe he really does love her.

In the midst of her trying to pick one man, her friend Carly, a werewolf, ends up needing help with her own male problems. Bronwyn and Rider end up coming to the aid of a group of werewolves as the pack fights among themselves in a dominance/justice battle. This part of the story really felt like it could have been fleshed out into another book. I guess it just seemed a little out of place even if it's result is what determined the decision that Bronwyn ultimately would make.

Review: It's been little while since I have read any of Rachel Vincent's books, and I have been sitting on this one for a while. I am so glad that I finally had the chance to read it. It. Is. Amazing. I loved Rachel Vincent's Shifter series and I can say that I am going to be itching to get the rest of this one as well. The story is about Liv and Cam. They are two very special Skilled people. Skilled people are people with a special skill that normal humans do not have, kind of like the movie Push. Both Cam and Liv are called Trackers because they have to ability to find people using either their name or their blood. The range that their skills work vary, but since they are typically hired while the person is still in their range, everything works out. Well Liv and Cam were in love, so much so that Cam thought they would someday be husband and wife. Then one day Liv walks out on him with no explanation at all.

The story takes place six years later. Cam has been keeping track of where Liv is and Liv has been trying to survive. The city they both live in is divided into three territories. One ruled by the gangster/criminal Jake Tower. Another ruled by the gangster/criminal Reuben Cavazos. The third is considered free, but you have to pay a lot of money to be able to remain unaffiliated. Liv has gotten herself mixed up with the Cavazos side of town, trying not to become someone she doesn't want to be. When Cam shows up on one of her jobs begging her to visit with an old friend, she knows that this is going to be nothing but bad news. She had no clue how bad it was really going to get.

Experience a world of ships that sail the clouds and cites buried beneath the ocean, and survive the fiery battle brought forth by those who control the forces of nature!

Review: I haven't read too many steam punk stories, but the description of this one really sparked my interest. I was not disappointed either. This is an amazing book! I don't know if it qualifies as YA, but a mature young teenager (perhaps 12 years old) could read this. I think that it would help foster a bigger imagination if they did. My only complaint is that there's going to be a second book that I now have to wait for.

The story is about Synn El'Asim. He has been groomed his entire like to become captain of an airship. He lives with his father on the ship he will someday rule, but his siblings live with their mother on a lethara city. This is because he is a product of two of the Great Families. His father is the ruler of the El'Asim and his mother is the ruler of the Ino. I would say it's easiest to understand if you think of them as tribes. They made created an alliance that resulted in their having kids. Synn's mother kept the ones that she thought would bear the mark of the Ino tribe. His father has Synn and one sister that were thought to have the mark of the El'Asim. Think of marks as hidden magic within their bodies that show up as something similar to a tattoo when they are ready for their powers. Some kids develop marks early in life and others, like Synn, develop very late. When they have their mark, they are able to control some element. Synn's father controlled lightning, while his mother controlled fire. Synn was the last child to develop his mark which you get to read all about. You will see how he has to learn to use it and live with it because his mark is one of the most powerful anyone has seen. They know this simply by how much of his body it covers which is nearly his entire body.

The entire story has elements that I can describe to you, but that really won't make sense out of context. The plot though is that Synn is captured by the ruling class and turned into Queen Nix's plaything. There are four queens, based on the tarot deck. Nix is determined to break his spirit so that he can be completely under her control. She intends to turn him into a weapon to control the world. Synn has other things in mind. You will be shocked what he has to go through to attempt to gain his freedom. You will question whether he will ever be truly free. Will Synn ever be able to be interested in women after the things he has gone through? Will Queen Nix destroy all the Great Families in order to keep her toy? Some questions will not be answered in this book, but you might have a general idea of where they are heading once you finish it. Again, this is an AMAZING story.
