Colorful, vivid, and passionate, 19-year-old Neci Stans wants nothing more than to belong to Dayton, Ohio’s high society set and marry the man of her dreams, Ezra Crawford. But there's some big problems: his racist father, the Ku Klux Klan, a woman who claims Ezra as her own, and a vindictive but sexy Englishman who wants Neci for his own. And of course, the biggest problem of all is her gypsy heritage and her “little bit” of magic. For 1900s Americans, life was changing, and Neci will make you cheer for the changes and cry for the heartbreaks.

#Disney 's "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" Begins Productions

Disney Picture

DISNEY’S “ALEXANDER AND THE TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, NO GOOD, VERY BAD DAY” BEGINS PRODUCTION

Film to Shoot Entirely in Los Angeles Area; Hits Theaters October 10, 2014

BURBANK, Calif. (August 29, 2013)
— Disney has kicked off production on “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day,” the first live-action film adaptation of Judith Viorst’s 1972 illustrated children’s classic. The film, directed by Independent Spirit Award-winner Miguel Arteta (“The Good Girl,” “Cedar Rapids,” “Youth in Revolt”) from a screenplay by Rob Lieber, is a 21 Laps Entertainment/Jim Henson Company production. Shooting in the Los Angeles area, with locations in the cities of Pasadena and Arcadia, the San Fernando Valley and Melody Ranch in Newhall, the film hits theaters nationwide on October 10, 2014.

Steve Carell (“The Way, Way Back,” “Little Miss Sunshine,” the forthcoming “Foxcatcher”) and Jennifer Garner (“Dallas Buyers Club, “The Odd Life of Timothy Green,” “Juno”) star as Alexander’s upbeat parents. The veteran performers are joined in the film by a trio of young talents that includes 16-year-old Dylan Minnette (“Lost,” the upcoming “Prisoners”) as Alexander’s older brother, Anthony; 15-year-old Kerris Dorsey (TV’s “Ray Donovan,” “Moneyball”) as sister Emily; and 12-year-old Australian native Ed Oxenbould (Oz TV’s “Puberty Blues”), who makes his big-screen feature debut as the film’s title character, Alexander.

Emmy® winner (and Golden Globe® nominee) Megan Mullally (“Will & Grace”) also joins the cast, along with Jennifer Coolidge (“American Pie,” “Legally Blonde,” TV’s “2 Broke Girls”) and Bella Thorne (“Shake It Up!”).

The film is produced by Shawn Levy (“Night at the Museum,” “Date Night,” “Real Steel”), Emmy® nominee and CEO of the Jim Henson Company Lisa Henson, and 21 Laps Entertainment President Dan Levine (“The Internship,” “Along Came Polly,” “Freedom Writers”). It’s executive produced by industry veteran Philip Steuer (“Saving Mr. Banks,” “Oz The Great and Powerful,” “The Chronicles of Narnia” trilogy) and Jason Lust (“Whip It,” “The Waiting Game”).

Disney’s “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” follows the exploits of 11-year-old Alexander as he experiences the most terrible and horrible day of his young life—a day that begins with gum stuck in his hair, followed by one calamity after another. But when Alexander tells his upbeat family about the misadventures of his disastrous day, he finds little sympathy and begins to wonder if bad things only happen to him. He soon learns that he’s not alone when his brother, sister, mom and dad all find themselves living through their own terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. Anyone who says there is no such thing as a bad day just hasn't had one.

Director Arteta’s key filmmaking team includes cinematographer Terry Stacey (“50/50,” “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen”), two-time Oscar®-nominated production designer Michael Corenblith (“The Blind Side,” “Saving Mr. Banks,” HBO’s “Game Change”), and two artists with whom he has previously collaborated: Oscar-nominated film editor Pam Martin (“The Fighter,” “Little Miss Sunshine,” “Youth in Revolt”) and veteran costume designer Nancy Steiner (“Little Miss Sunshine,” “Lost in Translation,” “The Good Girl,” “Youth in Revolt”).

“Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day,” published in 1972, was written by Judith Viorst and illustrated by Ray Cruz. The endearing, enduring classic (with more than 2 million copies in print) became an ALA Notable Children’s Book while also winning a George G. Stone Center Recognition of Merit, a Georgia Children’s Book Award, and distinction as a Reading Rainbow book. Viorst followed this book (inspired by her own three sons’ childhoods—Alexander, Anthony and Nicholas) with two sequels: “Alexander, Who Used to be Rich Last Sunday” (1978) and “Alexander, Who's Not (Do You Hear Me? I Mean It!) Going to Move” (1995). The 1972 original was first adapted to the small screen as a half-hour HBO animated musical in 1990 before Viorst collaborated with composers Charles Strouse (music) and Shelley Markham (musical score) for a 1998 stage musical at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

Literary Addicts Weekly Meme: Best Book Club Book #LiteraryAddicts

Literary Addicts

This week's theme is: What book would be the BEST book club choice? Why?
Join our group HERE to find out next week’s theme!

I have never been a part of a book club. I have visions that they are groups of women reading books that involve hot men for them to drool over. Either that or they sit around reading the classics and have super intellectual conversations. I really don't know what they would read, but I would recommend reading Eragon. There's a lot there to discuss and there are four books in the series. There's even a movie from the first book that they could watch and compare to the book. I found it to be an exciting read and it sparked my imagination.

Tell me what a book club is really like and am I far off on my thoughts!

Crowdfunding Success Stories Include $35,000 For Sock Monkeys And $2,000 For A Dry Composting Toilet

This article appeared on Forbes.com on January 30, 2013. It is included in Crowdfunding for Social Good by Devin Thorpe and is reprinted here as an excerpt from the book.

Social entrepreneurs of all varieties are turning to crowdfunding to launch or expand their social efforts; recently I’ve connected with five who have shared their stories of how they raised up to $100,000 each.

Crowdfunding for Social Good: Financing Your Mark on the World 3

Do Good Bus Tour, Las Vegas Rescue Mission

Rebecca Pontius led the effort for an organization called the Do Good Bus to raise $100,000 on StartSomeGood to show people how to volunteer by taking them on a bus to volunteer all around the country. She said, “A friend and I had been volunteering in LA for the past ten years at a couple different organizations and consistently had friends ask, ‘How do you know where to volunteer? How do you get involved?’ So we decided to put all those questioning friends on a bus and SHOW them exactly how to volunteer.”

Martha Griffin raised $31,763 on Kickstarter to publish a children’s book called Sam’s Birthmark. “When our son Barron was born with a port wine stain on his face,” she says, she was inspired to write the book. “Every child in the world is unique and special in their own way, and certain special characteristics make them shine as an individual. We want to show this message through a book with the child having a birthmark.”

Crowdfunding for Social Good: Financing Your Mark on the World 4

SMAC! Sock Monkey

Jennifer Windrum raised $35,000 on StartSomeGood for SMAC—Sock Monkeys Against Cancer. “My Mom, Leslie Lehrman, is the inspiration behind the creation of SMAC! She lived more than 1,200 miles away, making her appointments, tests, scan results and treatments that much harder for both of us. I wanted to give her something she could have, hold and touch when I couldn't be with her. I created SMAC! to give Mom a “buddy” she could hug to remind her that I am with her,” she says.

Kristopher Young, head of PROViDE, which provides care for people in Haiti, raised over $2,000 on StartSomeGood for a dry composting toilet. “We reached our goal plus with very little effort,” he says.

Brad Hurvitz, founder of Trek to Teach, raised $2,910 on StartSomeGood. “I had an opportunity to teach in a boarding school in Rajasthan, India through a connection of my brother. The challenge of going to an extremely foreign country and the opportunity of giving back was a perfect combination for me to satisfy the desire I had within. While there, I taught English to grades 4, 5, and 6. I was the soccer coach, photography teacher, taught kids how to swim, trained students for a marathon, helped market the boarding school and I directed the school’s first play, Pygmalion. I will never forget the expressions upon the faces of my students and had never felt such true gratification in my life,” he says.

These successful social entrepreneurs have offered some insights from their successes that are relevant for anyone wishing to raise money through crowdfunding.

Jennifer Windrum, a PR/social media strategist (turned activist) created a full marketing strategy for her campaign. “As a one-man band,” she says, “I had to continually re-prioritize aspects of the strategy, as I couldn't possibly tackle all that I wanted to. I needed to build an army. So, part of that strategy included building a private group of ambassadors on Facebook who could follow, and be an active part of the campaign from the very beginning, such as watching the making of the prototypes, trying to find a manufacturer - all the details it took to bring the SMAC! monkeys and the campaign to launch. Once the campaign kicked-off, this group had a very vested interest, an emotional connection, to these little monkeys and worked to help make them a reality.”

She adds, “While this was primarily an online campaign, I also took it offline, where those who aren't plugged into the social media world could participate by holding SMAC!-downs. A SMAC!-down is basically a girl's night out with a social good twist. I livestreamed a SMAC!-down at my house to officially kick off the campaign. I set up laptops where people could pledge right then and there, while they ate, drank and mingled. I provided language and directions on how others across the country could host SMAC!-downs...and they did.”

Her strategy paid off, she says, “According to StartStomeGood, the SMAC! campaign opened with the highest-earning first day in the history of the crowdfunding platform, raising over $5,000 within 24 hours.”

Brad Hurvitz noted, “Alex (Budak of StartSomeGood) and I had a discussion about the most effective fundraising strategy using their crowdfunding platform. He told me that the video was the most important part. Organize it like an essay: intro, body and conclusion. He told me to clearly communicate my mission and ASK for support and not to make it longer than 3 minutes!” He then recruited a professional video editor to help with the video on a pro bono basis.

Kristopher Young advised, “In my experience, having specific goals, funding amounts, and a timeline are integral parts to crowdfunding successes.” He added, “Our entire campaign was focused on the Facebook community and a small list of donors in our email contact database. We set our goal amount, an ending date for the campaign, and posted reminders occasionally on Facebook and sent two emails to everyone in our database during a 3-week campaign.”

Rebecca Pontius says, “We raised just over $100,000 on StartSomeGood to take the Do Good Bus on tour with the band Foster The People.” She adds, “It took consistent monitoring, posts on Twitter and Facebook, personal begging emails to friends and support from the band to raise the money in time.” She also observed that choosing the right platform is key. She originally launched her campaign on Kickstarter but was “booted” because the project wasn’t a creative project; she quickly switched to StartSomeGood where she was successful.

Martha Griffin reported, “Our goal was $25,000 and we raised $31,763 on Kickstarter to publish a children's book called Sam's Birthmark. We sent numerous e-mail campaigns to our friends, family and our entire network. We also heavily targeted friends of friends and the Vascular Birthmark community through Facebook.”

Comparing notes across these efforts, it is fair to conclude that raising money for social entrepreneurship is like raising money for almost anything else. It is easy to raise a bit of money and an organized, concerted effort and a large existing network, community or fan base is required to raise a lot of money through crowdfunding.

#BookExcerpt: Annie Crow Knoll-Sunrise by Gail Priest #PromoBookTours

Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links.

Annie Crow Knoll-Sunrise 1

Annie Crow Knoll-Sunrise 2
Title: Annie Crow Knoll-Sunrise
Series:
Author: Gail Priest
Publisher: Hayson Publishing
Description: Annie is a determined young woman who is left to run her family's property after the death of her parents. Managing fourteen summer cottages with only the help of a family friend, she struggles to survive on her own. When she meets Drew, a young college professor, Annie thinks she's finally found a love she can trust.

But years of conflict and pain destroy their bond and leave Annie alone again, unless she can find lasting peace and passion in the most unlikely arms.

In this family saga, love, loss and history twine together the people whose lives are changed by Annie's determination and the magic of her knoll nestled along the head-waters of the Chesapeake Bay.

Excerpt:
Annie loaded a thermos of hot cocoa, a blanket, her binoculars, a copy of Romeo and Juliet, and a new letter from Grace into a large wicker basket. When she reached the top of the ladder, Annie pulled on the rope that hauled her basket up to the Crow's Nest. She had everything she needed for the rest of the day.

She could hear the loud honking of migrating Canada Geese and the subtle lapping of the water on the beach. A breeze rustled the dry leaves still clinging to the branches around her. Their russet reds contrasted the brilliant blue sky above. Annie cuddled under the blanket and read Grace's letter. The school year without her best friend seemed endless, and this was only the beginning of their long separation. Deeply engrossed in the last paragraph of the letter, the sharp report of a shotgun from the marsh distracted Annie. She assumed that her father and Big Black Bo were hunting, but when she heard a cry for help, she looked out to see someone limping on the beach of Cattail. Annie grabbed her binoculars and focused them on the figure that then collapsed onto the ground. It was Bunky Watson, a boy a grade ahead of her in school.

Annie quickly scrambled down from the Crow's Nest, ran across the lawn and down the stairs to the dock. She stood for a moment and called to Bunky. She waved, and he waved back. Annie untied the lines to her father's skiff and jumped in. With three tugs, she started the outboard motor and pulled away from the pier. As Annie moved closer to Cattail, she saw Bunky look up in the sky with one arm over his eyes to block the sun. She looked up, too. The outboard motor had drowned out the sound of another flock of Canadas flying overhead.

Annie cut the motor, lifted it up and let the boat glide to shore. She hopped out, grabbed the front end and tugged it up onto beach, making a rasping sound over the sand.

“What happened?” Annie asked Bunky as she approached him.

“I shot myself in the damn foot!” he snarled.

That’s what he’d been doing. Trying to shoot one of those poor birds. Annie wondered how the edge of the shot pattern hit Bunky's foot when he was aiming at the geese in the sky. However, there wasn't time to ask questions.

“Well, come on. Throw your arm over my shoulder so I can help you to the boat,” she instructed.

Annie could barely pull him up onto his uninjured foot. Blood trailed behind them as she labored with the husky boy toward the skiff.

“What about my daddy’s shotgun? I dropped it back there in the marsh,” Bunky suddenly asked with concern.

“Leave it for now. We’ve got to get you to the doctor.”

“But I wasn’t supposed to take it by myself. He’s going to kill me.”

“Not if you die from loss of blood or lead poisoning first. Now get into the boat."

"All my friends got their own shotguns long before now," he complained.

"I’ll come back for it later with my father."

"Don't tell your father! He'll call my daddy!" Bunky whined.

"Judging from your foot, your father may be able to guess that you took his gun.”

Annie’s face was wet with sweat after getting big Bunky Watson to the boat. The air felt cool on her skin as she steered past the Knoll and toward the town beach. She hoped someone would be there to help her get him up the street to the new doctor who had just taken over for the retired Dr. Brown. There was blood in the boat now, and Bunky was getting pale.

When Annie pulled up to the town pier, she began blowing a series of three short blasts on the whistle that her father kept in the boat.

Miraculously, Mr. Packard appeared on the beach and came striding across the sand as she cut the motor.

Wordlessly, Pack lifted Bunky and cradled him like a huge toddler.

“Go back and get the shotgun, will you, Annie? It's my daddy's new Winchester, and he's going to skin me alive if anything happens to it,” Bunky pleaded.

“You’re lucky that you didn’t blow off your damn head, Bunky Watson!” Annie shouted at him as he and Packard headed off the beach and up the street to the doctor’s office.

#BookReview: Learning to Trust by Cynthia P. O'Neill #ReleaseDayDiva

Learning to Trust
Title: Learning to Trust
Series: Learning Series
Author: Cynthia P. O'Neill
Publisher: Cynthia P. O'Neill
Description: ***Due to strong sexual content and language, this book is suitable for mature audiences only. Ages 18+***

When Garrett Andrews finds something that catches his eye, he goes after it, letting nothing stand in the way of what he wants to possess. The first woman to arouse his heart could be the one person who helps him to finally open up and feel again.

Laurel Hart was a swimming champion until a frightful event and unknown health issues derailed her career. With a recent degree from MIT in Bio-Medical Engineering and an offer to join one of the leading innovators of medical equipment in the world, she plans on making a new life for herself; letting nightmares from her past stay in the past, or so she thinks.

Neither of them wants to date, but she finds herself drawn to him and Garrett uses every excuse to be near her. Laurel’s afraid to let anyone get close, but finds solace in his arms. Garrett is finally able to be himself around someone. Together, they discover a connection that manages to soothe both their souls and starts opening them up to new possibilities.

Once Garrett finds out about Laurel’s past, all rules in regards to "relationships" are changed, because one false move could drive her away. He attempts to calm her nightmares and gain her trust so he can show her who he really is and the relationship he desires from her.

Will they be able to overcome the damage their hearts have encountered? Can they find happiness? Can they trust their minds or will life throw each of them another curveball? Only time will tell if they can learn to trust.

Review: This is a straight up romance/erotica story. Nothing that happens in this book is considered vulgar so I can safely say that it probably won't offend anyone that is into this type of story. Laurel is graduating from college and ready to move as far away as possible in order to escape a very traumatic experience that has been haunting her for a long time now. She wants to find a job that will take her across the country even though it means leaving her family behind. It's the price one pays for running away from their past. When she first sees Garrett though, she discovers feelings she has never felt before coming alive. At first, this is a problem because she doesn't intend to stick around to find out what those feelings really are, but that all changes when he offers her a job in Orlando, FL...far far away from where she is now. He confesses having strong feelings for immediately and so their exploration begins.

The book is primarily about Laurel learning to trust Garrett's sexual desires. They are in a relationship, but she doesn't know what exactly to call it because in truth she knows next to nothing about him...well other than how to drive him crazy and to please him. It's not until very close to the end of the book that she learns his deep secret and decides that her trust in him was misplaced, that is until her past comes back to haunt her.

So what did I think of the book? It's very well written. If you want to read an arousing book, this would be a great one to look at. As for the story line, I found it pretty unbelievable. After the trauma that Laurel endured I didn't see how she would ever trust a man like Garrett. What I wasn't crazy about is that Garrett is a very domineering and controlling man. I can't picture a victim like Laurel ever trusting a man that is so controlling that he picks out her clothes for her every day. He is also is the type of guy to tell her exactly what to do and when in bed. I am not saying that it is nice to be dominated sometimes in bed, but not all the time or the way he does it. The way he talks during those times would make me feel violated. She claims to like it most of the time because she doesn't have to think at all, but this is a girl with a degree in a really advanced field of study. She's supposed to be super smart, but she allows him to control her. It is a source of confusion for her. I just don't think someone from a similar situation would ever allow that to happen unless she's truly going to be a victim all her life. There's a cliffhanger at the end which will probably force me to read the next book just because I want to see if this girl gets her act together and takes control of her life.

This week's theme is: Which book villain do you just love to hate?
Join our group HERE to find out next week’s theme!

It's really hard to say what villain I love to hate. I tend to forget about the villains once I have finished reading the book because I get so absorbed in the characters that I love. I guess I would say Valdemort from the Harry Potter series. I hated him for all the things that he did through out the story, but I loved having him around. There would not have been a series without Valdemort and I loved that series. So I guess I love to hate him.

Keeper of Reign 1

Keeper of Reign 2Keeper of the Reign

Books written in blood. Most are lost, their Keepers with them. A curse that befell a people. A Kingdom with no King. Life couldn’t get more harrowing for the Elfies, a blend of Elves and Fairies. Or for sixteen-year-old Jules Blaze. Or could it?

For Jules, the heir of a Keeper, no less, suspects his family hides a forgotten secret. It was bad enough that his people, the Elfies of Reign, triggered a curse which reduced the entire inhabitants to a mere inch centuries ago. All because of one Keeper who failed his purpose. Even the King’s Ancient Books, did not help ward off that anathema.

Now, Gehzurolle, the evil lord, and his armies of Scorpents, seem bent on destroying Jules and his family. Why? Gehzurolle’s agents hunt for Jules as he journeys into enemy land to find the truth. Truth that could save him and his family, and possibly even reverse the age-long curse. Provided Jules doesn't get himself killed first.

#BookReview: The Legend of the Spider-Prince: Rebel by Margo Ander #PromoBookTours

The Legend of the Spider-Prince 1

The Legend of the Spider-Prince: Rebel 2
Title: The Legend of the Spider-Prince: Rebel
Series: Legend of the Spider-Prince series, Book 1
Author: Margo Ander
Publisher: Meander Creek Books
Description: Wyl is a young rebel whose life of dangerous lies and hidden truths has cost him his childhood and his ability to trust. He is fanatically loyal to the rebel leader, a woman embroiled in a blood-feud with Trascolm’s ruling clan. When he’s not away spying, he’s her secret bodyguard—she needs protection from her army of renegades and outlaws as much as from bounty-hunters and assassins sent by her archenemy.

But when the rebellion meets with disaster, the rebel leader’s strategy changes. Wyl is thrust into a hostile royal court of underage teens—mere children, to his mind. He’s expected to embrace this more civilized way of life, but his brutally-honed instincts betray him, and he makes enemies instead of friends. Wyl—a boy raised by outlaws—is in over his head and must somehow master the subtleties of court intrigue well enough to keep the rebel leader and her rebellion alive, despite the treacherous machinations of her enemies, and do it without getting himself killed.

About the Legend of the Spider-Prince series
In a war-torn land where men have unbridled influence, but women hold the reins of power, a young rebel becomes entangled in a deadly web of magic, court intrigue, and revenge amid an escalating wave of events that will ultimately destroy magic, overturn governments, cause the near-collapse of civilization, even threaten the very existence of life on Eryth—and make him a legend.

Review: It has been awhile since I read a straight up fantasy story, so I had a little trouble getting into it. I also had issues because of the words in the story. I think I was in chapter three before I could keep straight what some of the words were referring to. That, by the way, is my only complaint about this book. I would have loved a pronunciation guide for the words that are obviously part of the world created in the story. The difficulties I had were with how they were pronounced and whether the word was referring to an item, a country, or a clan. Once you get into the book, what the noun means becomes much clearer.

My only complaint lodged, this is a fantastic story. It is not a fast read, but it reminded me of how much I loved the Eragon series. The story is about a boy who believes himself to be a man since he has been raised among a rebel war party made up of brigands and thieves. He has been trained to defend himself by one of the best war generals of all time, but he has yet to develop the strength of a man. He is one of the bodyguards to Helgurdda, the rebel leader who intends to be the royenne (I take that to mean queen) of their country. She does have a claim to the crown, but due to the blood-feud that she has also vowed, she will never be royenne without completely overthrowing and killing the current royalty. In the beginning of the book, you learn about the blood-feud and how Wyl (the main character) has been raised. Then after becoming exiles, you learn how Wyl wasn't raised. You will also learn a few very important surprises about who he really is. Finally in part three, you learn what Wyl will probably become. The lasst part of the book flies by from all the action going on. I seriously had trouble putting it down once I got into it because I just had to know what was going to happen next. I guess I do have one more complaint about the book though, I don't want to wait for the second one to find out more. It's fabulous.
