#BookReview: Tropical Storm by Stefanie Graham

Tropical Storm
Title: Tropical Storm
Series:
Author: Stefanie Graham
Publisher: 2S Publishing
Description: Watch out! A Storm is coming.

Millionaire hotelier Cairo Kane has dealt with his fair share of tropical storms on the Caribbean island of Jamaica. Not one to hide from tumultuous weather, he would rather attack it, head on. Six years ago he left his life in New York City and escaped to the beautiful island of Jamaica to apply himself to the business of making money. The former blue-collar boy was driven, fierce, and determined; there wasn't a challenge he didn't take or a tempest he couldn't tame. Before Jessica Storm no woman had the power to shatter his confidence or break his heart. Storm enthralled him, married him and then betrayed him. He loved her once. He vowed never to love anyone that much again.

Spoiled Manhattan socialite Jessica Storm might have the perfect pedigree but she doesn't have love. She’d been a bride for a single night before her parents’ treachery drove her and her new husband apart. Cairo left her behind and escaped to an island paradise to create a new life and to forget the love they had once shared. Now she wants him back, whether Cairo likes it or not, he is hers until death do they part. They made a vow. As a force of nature no man is a match for her when she is hell-bent on having her way. Her husband better prepare for bad weather. A Storm is coming.

Review: This is a contemporary romance, something I have been finding myself more drawn to with each one I have read. This particular story is about two people who were desperately in love, eloped, and then separated on their wedding night. Jessica Storm comes from a very wealthy family, one that actually still believes in using their children to broker deals. She was supposed to remain unspoiled for the arranged marriage her parents had cooked up, but she was able to instead marry and consummate her marriage to Cairo before her parents could do anything about it. How do they get back at her for her treachery? They storm into their motel room moments after they have done the deed, drag her out of bed, and take her home. They then blackmail her into turning Cairo away when he shows up at their doorstep to take his wife back. What is so terrible about this moment to me is that these two obviously didn't know enough about one another to have gotten married in the first place. When Jessica tells him that she never should have married him because she was betrothed to someone else and that she didn't love him, he should have known her well enough to see past the words. He should have been able to recognize that her parents had put her up to it and stood his ground a little longer than her had. Their lack of knowledge about one another sends their lives spiraling apart.

Cairo turns his entire life around from that moment. He went from being the poor orphan bellhop of one of Jessica's dad's hotels to owning his own chain of hotels in the Caribbean. He becomes a very wealthy man. The downside is that he has left the country leaving Jessica to spend six years trying to locate him. She now has a son and is married, but the question is, who is the father and who is her husband? What did she do in order to survive when her parents cut her off and all she wants is to find her Cairo? This is the source of my only complaint in this book. I felt like Jessica with holds information from Cairo a little too often when they meet again. No relationship can survive without all the facts and they both are frustrated from their inability to communicate. Poor Cairo spends so much time second guessing Jessica which could have all been avoided if Jessica had just told him the truth right away. On the other hand, Cairo is PMSing through most of the story. He is one of the most emotional men I had ever read about. There were definitely times when I felt like some other character needed to just lock them in a room for a while and throw away the key. Other than that, it was a very well written story.

#ProductReview: Ozeri INSTAVAC Green Earth Food Storage Container

Ozeri INSTAVAC Green Earth Food Storage Container Set, BPA-Free 8-Piece Nesting Set with Vacuum Seal and Locking Lids

Ozeri 1

Tupperware. Food storage containers. I am sure there are other names for this type of product, but honestly those are what I use most of the time. I call everything Tupperware even though I don't own anything by the actual brand. However, I love storage containers. I love to be organized. I love having lots of storage containers so that I can find the one that is exactly the right size for what I am storing. When I saw the Ozeri INSTAVAC Green Earth Storage container set, I had to try them out.

Ozeri 2
What's so special about these containers? Well to start with, they neatly stack inside each other with their lids. This is a huge saver of space in your cabinets and allows you not have to sift through all your lids to find the right one.

Ozeri 3
Second, the lids have clasps on all for sides. That means there's no way you're going to accidentally put the lid on without sealing all four corners. This is something that is a huge issue in my house. My husband is terrible about making sure the lid is completely sealed, but with this set, he has no excuse.

Ozeri 4
Third, the lids have this special INSTAVAC seal on them. Once you get the lid on completely, you simply push down on the lid near its center and the air inside is sucked out of it. You won't get all of the air out depending on how full the container is, but this removes the need to "burp" your Tupperware. It's super easy and will help your leftovers last even longer. When you are ready to open them, you simply lift the INSTAVAC seal and the air goes back into the container.

The fourth and final item that I really like about these containers is that there is a dial (See image above) where you can set the day of the month you put food into the container. You can judge how well your food keeps by how many days the container sits in your fridge. I like the idea that you can "date" your food.

#BookExcerpt: Rhidauna by Paul E. Horsman #PromoBookTours

Rhidauna 1

Rhidauna 2
Title: Rhidauna
Series: The Shadow of the Revenaunt, Book 1
Author: Paul E. Horsman
Publisher: Paul E. Horsman
Description: It was to have been a simple boar hunt. But Fate and the friends own inexperience turn it into disaster.

With one of them badly hurt, Ghyll Denhalf and his friends return to their castle - to find it burned by a band of monstrous firebirds and black-clad golems.

Now, hunted by dark necromancers of an obscure, long-forgotten organization, they travel through the kingdom of Rhidauna on an epic journey of revenge and discovery, magic and desperate sword fights, bitter enmity and warm friendship.

Excerpt:
CHAPTER 3 – RETURN TO TINNURAD
(Point of View: 1st Antagonist Illgram)

In his woodman’s cabin in the forest outside town, the black-robed man shot upright.

“You failed, Illgram.” Central’s hollow words were as hammer blows inside his head. “Failed bitterly. Hardingraud arrived in Gromarthen tonight.”

“What...”

“The Master is disappointed, Illgram.” The thoughts of the undead mentalist, the voice of the Dar’khamorth, carried no emotions, but the images he transferred with them colored his message with contempt.

“I...”

Again, Central did not let him finish. “You have until sundown, Illgram. Should Hardingraud still live - you know what happens to people who fail.”

Illgram knew; he had killed enough of them. “Yes,” he said, but Central had ended the connection.

Failure! His mind couldn’t grasp the idea. His prey had escaped! How could he? After all his careful preparations. What had gone wrong? Who had blundered? That castle’s fall should have been his chance at glory. Now... He broke out in a cold sweat. Now it could mean his downfall. He gasped. His death?

He turned his head, looking for a way out. Not the portal in the hut; it would return him straight to the Master’s house. If he wanted to live, he had to repair the error. To Gromarthen, then. Hardingraud had to die.

As he galloped towards the town, he heard the howling of the jackals in his mind. The lesser temple priests would gloat over his failure. His fall increased their chances. Never! He would not allow it. The three boats were still near the goal, and they had enough golems between them to finish the job. That would make all well again. He took a deep breath. All had to be well again.

Paul E. HorsmanAbout the Author:

Paul E (Erik) Horsman (1952)

Lives in Roosendaal, The Netherlands.

I was born in the year 1952, in the Dutch town of Bussum, a sleepy, well-to-do place that was home to many artists, musicians, writers and publishers. As my family were neither artists nor well-to-do, we moved when I was nine.

When I was seventeen, I started my career as paperclip counter with a worldwide Dutch producer of baby food. After some months, I was finished counting, and I looked around for something more interesting.

A love of books drove me to work in a small bookstore in Rotterdam. An ancient establishment, since 1837, in an old building just too far away from the city’s modern shopping center. It was a nice job, but there wasn’t any future in it. Still, I left it a licensed bookseller.

In 1972 I had to do my stitch for Queen and Country, and as a bad back tied me to a desk job, I applied for a posting overseas. For the Army, that meant Surinam, then still a member of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and one of the most beautiful. Once you’ve seen the jungle, you will never forget it.

To keep it short, I stayed in business, slowly climbing the ladder, until in 1995 I changed direction. That year I joined a large educational institution, at a school specialized in Dutch language and integration courses for foreigners. That meant immigrants, refugees and international businessmen, an interesting mix. It was great work, on the one side teaching crash courses Dutch to high-powered people (we got a lot of very well-educated refugees) and on the other teaching reading and writing to people who had never ever held a pen before, let alone a computer. To see them growing was a reward in itself.

Unhappily, due to changed legislation the language school closed in mid-2012.

In the meantime, I had started my first book (Rhidauna) in 2009 and it got published by Zilverspoor Publishers just before I got laid off. As my age, five years from retirement, made it nigh on impossible to find something else, I started building a career as an independent author.

SF and Fantasy have fascinated me since my high school days, but apart from some juvenile trash, I never seriously tried to write anything. But after several false starts and associated discouraged intervals, a spark began to grow and mid-2010, the first two parts of Shadow of the Revenaunt were more or less written.

My style is probably a bit old-fashioned, Fantasy as a heroic tale with sympathetic heroes/heroines and black villains, in which good always triumphs in the end.

I don’t use my characters as cannon fodder; they get hurt, but their dying is rare.

One of the other elements in my writing I think important is, that both male and female characters have their own lives and goals. Most of them exist primarily for themselves, not as a prop or a love interest for other MC’s. The only character who did die, was actually a prop and I had him killed just to take that away from my lead MC.

Rhidauna 1

Rhidauna 2

by Paul E. Horseman

The night before his Coming-of-Age, Ghyll and his two friends escaped their castle on a clandestine hunt that would forever change their lives. They returned just in time to see their island castle destroyed by strange warriors from a dragonboat and flocks of burning birds.

Ghyll’s birthday turned into a nightmare as they fled into the night. This begins an epic journey to find out who is trying to kill them... and most importantly, why? Fortunately, they can count on colorful new friends to assist, including a sometimes overly enthusiastic fire mage, an inexperienced paladin and a female beastmaster who is a ferocious mountain lion. In a world filled with jealous priests, corrupt magistrates, bored aristocrats and power-hungry magicians, they try to survive dark wizards, murderous golems, and fire bird attacks. It soon becomes apparent that not one but several assassins are after them. Who are these members of an obscure, long-forgotten organization?

And whose cold hand reaches across the boundaries of space and time to threaten weakened Rhidauna?

While the time is running the friends undertake a quest that takes them to a large part of Rhidauna. Following them, the reader is carried along on an exciting journey through a colorful world, whose people, culture and atmosphere are described with great attention to detail without the story losing momentum.

Experience the quest! Grab your best travel clothes, strongest backpack and sharpest sword ... or failing that, take an easy chair, a drink and this exciting book.

In Bernovem, Kristina not only fits in, she’s honored as “the chosen one” the only one who can release the land from Queen Sentiz’s control. But it’s not as simple as it seems. To save Bernovem, she must place the gift she was given, the famous “Warble” in its final resting place. And she must travel through the deep forest, climb a treacherous mountain, and risk capture by the queen’s “zelbocks” before she reaches her destination. Guided by her new fairy friends, Clover and Looper and by Prince Werrien, a teenage boy, as well as an assortment of other characters, Kristina sets off on a perilous journey that not only tests her strength but her heart.

**This book has recently undergone a name change and cover change. It used to be called The Magic Warble.**

I would also recommend that you consider picking up the second book, The Shard (previously called The Black Shard). They can be read as stand alone stories, but The Shard falls nicely after The Warble. To help entice you to fall in love with Victoria Simcox's writing, here's the blurb for The Shard.

The Shard

The Shard by Victoria Simcox

The Shard, Victoria Simcox’s fast-paced, intricately woven sequel to The Warble, takes Kristina Kingsly and her schoolmates back to Bernovem … and into a thrilling, often dangerous adventure.

Kristina’s stay at summer horse camp is horrible to say the least, and it’s all because Hester and Davina are there as well, making her life miserable. When Hester’s cruel prank goes terribly wrong, it’s actually what sends the three girls back to the magical land of Bernovem. In Bernovem, Kristina is very excited to see her former friend, Prince Werrien. When he invites her to sail with him on his ship to his homeland Tezerel, putting it simply, Kristina can’t refuse.

Reunited with her gnome, dwarf, animal, fairy friends … and best of all, Werrien, things seem like they couldn’t get any better for Kristina. But when Werrien becomes fascinated with an unusual seeing stone, the “Black Shard”, Kristina is haunted by a ghostlike old hag. Struggling against suspicion, guilt, illness, and ultimately the one who wants to possess her soul, Kristina will see it’s in her weakest moment that she will encounter more strength than she has ever known.

#BookReview: A Warlord's Lady by Nicola E. Sheridan

A Warlord's Lady
Title: A Warlord's Lady
Series:
Author: Nicola E. Sheridan
Publisher: Escape Publishing - Harlequin Enterprises, Australia Pty Ltd
Description: Magic, murder and mayhem collide when an ordinary woman meets a powerful warlord — and writes a bestselling, tell-all book...

It's got to be Stockholm Syndrome...

Eighteen fateful months ago, Sabra was kidnapped by the infamous magician warlord Cain Dath, and her body just won't let her forget. Hidden in the humid depths of the Laos jungle, she shared everything with him, but he never shared his heart.

In his position of power, Cain cannot show weakness. He must lead his people to freedom and no one — not even the woman he's fast becoming obsessed with — can stand in his way.

Then Sabra sells her story of love slavery in a tell-all exposé and brings fame, fortune, and every one of his enemies down upon them both. Now, she is open to attack on all fronts, and he can no longer stay away. The man who enslaved her may well be the only man who can save her.

Review: I am in love with Nicola's books. Every single one of her books has been utterly fascinating and enthralling to me. This one is the first that didn't involve a genie though, so there was concern if my love was for genies or her actual writing. I can confidently say that it is her writing that I love so much. This book was just as fantastic as all the others I have read. Her characters have real depth to them. I continue reading each story because I just have to know what will happen to each character and how they will change over the course of the story. The plot development is steady and won't leave you disappointed.

Now a little about the story. Sabra is a woman who blends in with the world. Looking at her, no one would suspect that there is much that is special about her. She's a chameleon; she's not magical and not really human. As a chameleon, she has the ability to change her appearance to look like someone else or, if she is nude, blend into her environment completely. In a world where people who have magical abilities or are magical creatures are forced to register with their government, Sabra is special simply because she does not have to register, but somehow she has attracted the interest of the notorious warlord Cain Dath. What could possibly have made him interested in this slightly overweight nobody of a chameleon? This is what the entire world is wondering after reading her book. She was kidnapped by Cain, where she spent six months as his love slave. Well that's what she calls herself in the book at least. In truth, she's not so sure that she was really a slave since she was a willing participant. Now, eighteen months later, she's under house arrest by the Australian government as they wait for Cain to reclaim her. If only she understood why everyone suddenly wanted her so badly.
