#BookReview: Fragile Creatures by Kristina Circelli

Title: Fragile Creatures
Author: Kristina Circelli

Review: This YA novel was something so impressive that I literally woke up in the night wanting to read more. The two nights that occurred while I was reading this book had me risking keeping my infant up during her night time feeding from the glow of my kindle. It's a very serious book about an extremely trying time for a teenager. She was learning to drive with her father when they ended up in a car accident that took his life. She was both emotionally and physically scarred from the accident. She needed physical therapy for one knee and for a crushed hand which she never followed through with leaving her limping and almost unable to use her hand. You would think that her mother would have forced her daughter to do everything necessary to not be debilitated, but not Evangeline's mother. Instead of being happy that she hadn't lost both her husband and daughter, her mother blamed Evangeline for her father's death. She constantly reminded her of what she had done by being in that accident by saying she was unwanted and a murderer. The constant emotional abuse led her to do something that many people would consider unforgivable. She ended up in the psych ward off a hospital with the state of Florida finally getting involved. This is an instant where the state truly knew what was best for Evangeline by taking her away from her mother for a very special rehabilitation program. She was sent to a place where she would help rehabilitate would animals by doing hard physical labor. It serves as punishment, physical therapy, emotional therapy, and ultimately a reward for everything she had to sufferafter her father died. I am not going to tell you any more about the plot because I don't want to give it away for you. I know the topic seems depressing, but Kristina Circelli presents it in such a way that you will be fascinated, enthralled, and completely engrossed. There are times that you will want to scream and cry. There are times that will make you smile. I absolutely loved it. I wish for someone to read it and make a movie about it. It was such a touching story that I think it would make a fantastic movie.

#BookTour: Savage Secrets by Cristin Harber #promobooktours

Savage Secrets Banner

Caterina Cruz has no home. No loyalties. No objection to exacting torturous revenge. Her life’s mission is to destroy the terrorist who murdered her family. Then she steps into an elaborate game of charades alongside a Titan Group operative posing as an arms dealer—and her newlywed husband. The sexy distraction may be more than she can handle.

Attacked with a psychedelic drug weeks before, Rocco Savage is plagued with hallucinations that threaten his new rank as Titan’s second-in-command. No one knows and he wants to keep it that way. Throwing him further off his game, he now has a wife with her own secrets he can’t crack and an agenda he can’t control.

Their mission—an elaborate deception of heated glances and passionate kisses—spins out of control. With Rocco's mind already compromised, can he keep his secret and his distance? And with Caterina's tragic past controlling her every move, can she keep the con up long enough to secure her revenge? Or will both go down in flames?

Excerpt: Terrorist drop off

Rocco dropped his delivery and the sack of flesh and bones thudded on the concrete floor.

“Signed. Sealed. Delivered.” He dusted his hands together. “He’s your problem now. Adios.”

“Adios?” The words danced in the air. Soft to the hardness of the calloused room. Sexy and exotic. Accented. And gorgeous. “Fine. Adios if that’s what you want.”

He turned on the heel of his boot, lasering in on a shadowy corner sheathed by a partition. A woman? A silhouetted figure stood with a hand on a cocked hip, behind a screen. Long legs and a pony tail stood outlined in a magnificent shadow. Holy hell. Nothing about that belonged in this room.

This place was violence and atrocity. She was a gauzy reflection of soft edges and a smooth voice. Hell. He hadn’t even seen her, touched her. Yet. But that fact didn’t stop his gut tightening and his eyes from popping. Nah, must have been all the adrenaline from snatching the terrorist not ten minutes before. But damn if he wasn’t wishing for coulda, woulda, shoulda met this girl someplace else.

He swallowed against the boulder in this throat. “What I want has nothing to do with mission objective.”

The metallic clang of tools hitting the cement floor clattered from behind the partition. She let loose a swell of what were probably curses, in Spanish, then her sing-song called to him, still hidden behind the screen. “Ah, the American who plays by the rules. How interesting.”

Her cursing made him chuckle, and made him…interested. This whole place did. What the hell was she saying anyway? It was a rollercoaster of pissed off words, complete with rolled Rs that nearly swayed over his senses. He wanted her to keep talking. Another step closer and damn if he didn’t want to see her face, knowing it would do far more justice to the rockin’ silhouette painted behind the partition. “Says the Brit who speaks like a Spaniard.” And swear like a— “I’m not British.”

What else could he learn about her in the next, oh, minute and a half he was expected to be here? Maybe she would keep talking. He’d jump through all kinds of hoops if that woman let loose her accent again. Please, keep talking. “And I don’t play by the rules. But you—”

She laughed and the sound slid over his body, winding down his spine. He took in a deep breath, embracing the sensation. The laugh was better than her words, and he wanted to make it happen again.

“Today.” She was back to work. “It looks like you do.”

“I came bearing a gift.” He looked to the man lying on the floor. “My mission objective is complete and your invite comes just a little too late.” That and he’d left a team of men sitting outside. If he didn’t walk out soon, they’d make an appearance, guns pointed and on a search-and-destroy mission. Rocco not coming out was most definitely not on their itinerary.

“I see.”

No, you don’t. You can’t see anything, and I’m dying to see you. It was just a voice. But hell. She was too… something. Rare. Offbeat. Familiar? She worked behind the screen and walked toward the edge of the partition. Such a tease. Like she knew he was ready to knock the thing over to get a good look at what housed that voice, her laugh, and those never ending legs.

“Fine. Go.” She shooed him away with a grand sweep of her arm. “Team Titan off to the next job.”

The sound of the Ts rolling off her tongue made his chest crash into itself. Ribs crumbling. Lungs deflating. A reaction based solely on intuition. “You know more about me than I know about you. Come on out of your hiding place.”

“Almost done with my prep work.” More of that accent that had him turned-on and unable to walk out of the room. A pause dangled in the air. A zap of electricity and bright white sparks sprayed from behind the divider. Shock therapy was in store for the man still groaning on the floor, and for a brief second, Rocco almost pitied the terrorist. Almost.

“Perfect,” she whispered. More sparks. More zaps.

Without his control, his eyes slammed shut. Only for a half second. Long enough that a shiver ran down his shoulders. But he had this. No flashbacks or star-sightings would happen right now. Those zaps were real as the body behind that screen. There was no way in hell this was a hallucination. She stepped out. An image of beauty in a desolate, craptastic interrogation site. One long leg, then the next teased him to the point of distraction. He followed the length of her boot, drinking in the skin tight black pants over the sway of her hips. A black shirt covered her torso and stretched over what he knew were the definition of perfect breasts. Finally, Rocco let his focus caress the curve of her lips, the deepness and darkness of her intense stare. More than model gorgeous. More than manufactured beauty. She was sweet and sultry. A vision. Standing there, with electrical cables and a torture table at the ready, she couldn’t have been more out of place. Yet, this was her room. She owned it and that kind of confidence was unshakeable.

He cleared his throat. “Do you need a hand?”

“Does it look like I do?” She looked over her shoulder, smiling a half grin. Knowing the connotation behind his question. Challenging him to say it out loud. She stopped. Turned around and stared, eyes narrowed and lips pursed. Then she smiled again, nodding. “Do you believe in coincidence?”

Coincidence? More like luck, walking into a room manned by a woman as deadly and dangerous as she was beautiful and breathtaking? He heard noises from the outer room. Seems he’d overstayed his prescribed amount of time before back up was ready to check in. “Well, I’ll leave you to it.”

“See you around. Handsome.”

#BookExcerpt: Spartanica by Powers Molinar #Promobooktours

Spartanica 2 Title: Spartanica
Author: Powers Molinar
Description: Ty and Marcus Mitchell are average middle school brothers growing up north of Chicago until one night when they’re hurtled through an inter-dimensional gateway to a parallel world defined by its multiple moons and planet-wide apocalypse. As they struggle to figure out where they are and how to get home, the boys encounter refugees of “the last day” from the distant city of Atlantis and a mysterious girl called Bellana, the sole survivor and resident of the devastated city of Spartanica. Ty and Marcus soon learn they only have seven days to get home. But before they can leave, they must battle through long-extinct predators, track down the elusive Professor Otherblood, and rescue a new friend from certain death. Is all of this insanity just Ty’s overactive imagination or are the brothers truly on the brink of being stranded on the brutal wasteland known as Spartanica?

“Come on, man!” I yelled at Kinnard as he stood over the fallen Proditor with the other Atlantean kids. “He just saved our lives! Do something!”

“What do you want me to do?” he hollered back. “I’m no ’rat doctor.”

Proditor still wasn’t moving or breathing, at least as far as I could tell. I’d been kneeling next to him for probably ten minutes and he hadn’t given any indication he was still alive.

I finally stood up and walked away. The others followed at a distance. After getting somewhat back under control, I spun back around and faced them.

“Great,” I said, frustrated and saddened by Proditor’s loss. “This is great. How do we get into the human area now without setting off every alarm on the settlement? This messes up our whole plan.”

“I don’t know,” Yra answered. “Maybe we go back and think of another plan.” “No!” both Kinnard and I yelled.

“We’ll just have to figure out something else,” I insisted. “Dang, he was perfect. He was the missing link that brought it all together.”

“We still have all of us,” Kinnard said, motioning around at everyone. “We still have the transport and all the weapons. This is not a big deal, Marcus! As soon as the fireworks start, you and I will head inside the compound and get everybody out. You do your Guelphic thing and I’ll cover you with my rifle. We can still do this. We have to do this!”

Write What You Know - Maybe

Thank you Rave Reviews Book Club for voting me this week’s Spotlight Author! And, a huge thanks to all the members who agreed to host me on their site!

What would you do if Child Protective Services showed up on your doorstep with an army of Sheriff’s deputies and tried to remove your three-year-old from your home? Knowing there's no justification for their action and the court documents they presented are fabricated, would you stand by or fight to protect your child?

Over My Dead Body explores the deadly reaction and consequences when a protective father, Jeff Blake, tries to prevent the state from taking his daughter. The director of Child Protective Services uses his position to exact a personal vendetta in removing three-year-old Ashley from the Blake’s home.

The situation quickly becomes violent as Jeff resorts to the only response he feels he has. By the end of the short encounter, three people are dead. Ironically, Ashley is still taken, so the tragic fiasco gained nothing.

Matters are further complicated when Amy, the wife and mother, winds up in a mental ward due to the trauma she witnessed in her home. Jeff and Amy’s daughter is placed in temporary foster care, while the family’s attorneys attempt to salvage what they can and re-unite the family. The police, as well as the Courts, understandably, are not too concerned with the needs of the family and it seems the entire justice system is against them. Complete with many twists of fate, the story looks at the common problems of a typical family caught between love and the law.

Being my first novel, Over My Dead Body, will always have special place for me. Many first-time authors choose an event in their personal life to write about; something they know well and thus can relate in a believable manner. Write what you know, that’s the “rule.” For me, it wasn’t quite that simple.

No single real-life event sparked the creation of Over My Dead Body - at least in my life. Over the years, I’d heard of several news stories, which began similarly to this book - a corrupt official from the state shows up to remove a child from the home without cause. Having a weakness for defending the underdog or, someone who has been unjustly treated, the “without cause” always bothered me.

Every time I’d hear one of these stories, my initial thought was “I hope that never happens to me.” I know how I would react and it wouldn’t be good - not for anyone involved. I’m VERY protective of my children! However, I’m under no illusion as to the likely outcome of my actions. I decided to write a book describing what my response would be and what I’m sure would result from that response.

Although my children are now grown, as a parent, inserting myself into the role of the father in this story came easily. Yet, admittedly, I cannot fully imagine the helpless sense of desperation one must feel in such an instance. To be forced into the position of defending my family in my home, justifiably or not, would undoubtedly be a horror I’d rather not face. For me, the choice would be an easy one to make. But once that split-second decision is made, and executed, the aftermath of it all would be extremely complicated and stressful - for everyone concerned. While everyone else’s life goes on, the struggle to maintain any sort of sanity in the family would be challenging to say the least. And that, a family coping with the repercussions of choices made, is what this book is really about.

While the settings and events of this book may not be real - just an author imagining the way things might play out if such an event were to occur - the scenario is something that could happen. Something, as I’ve found since the release of Over My Dead Body, to which many parents can relate.

Bruce's questions & answers on THIS site:

  1. RRBC: Who influences you the most?

B.B.: That’s a hard question to answer. Several people influence me; some are authors, some are not. I suppose the best answer would be my family.

  2. RRBC: What is your favorite theme/genre to write?

B.B.: Crime suspense, usually with some injustice as the starting point.

  3. RRBC: Which character you’ve created is your favorite? Why?

B.B.: Wynn Garrett from the Wynn Garrett Series books, because he is very straightforward, doesn’t waste a lot of energy on formalities or even being nice when it is not warranted - yet, he can be quite courteous and considerate. Ultimately, he is quite comfortable being himself and doesn’t feel compelled to do things to make people like him.

  4. RRBC: Do any of your life experiences worm their way into your books?

B.B.: Yes, all the time. I change the details though, to fit into the story.

  5. RRBC: How do you like to connect with readers?

B.B.: The many forms of social media work well.

  6. RRBC: What do you hope readers take away from your books?

B.B.: The enjoyment of having experienced a believable story to which they can relate. In addition, I like to make people think or give them a smile at times.

  7. RRBC: Who helps you with the critique and editing process?

B.B.: My wife, who is my worst critic - and I’m very fortunate in that regard. There would be absolutely no benefit in her telling me my writing is fine if it is not. It takes a confident woman to tell a guy that something he’s worked on for months is garbage! Okay, she doesn’t always say it’s garbage but she is very helpful in terms of providing honest feedback and giving me constructive criticism. The point is, she doesn’t feel obligated to say everything I’ve written is great simply because I wrote it.

  8. RRBC: Do you ever hate something you’ve written?

B.B.: Yes. Quite often, actually. But apparently, my opinion doesn’t count! For example, I didn’t like my book Miscarriage Of Justice at all, and waited to release it for more than a year after it was finished. It turned out to be my biggest selling book.

  9. RRBC: How do you overcome any nagging self-doubt that inevitably creeps in?

B.B.: Keep writing and editing until it goes away.

#BookBlast: Have Mercy by Siobhan Beabhar #PromoBookTours

have mercy
Book Blast

Content Warning: This naughty yet hilarious story explores the complex subjects of identity, stigma, and sex work. The issues of passing and colorism within the African American community are lightly explored. Due to the coarse language and explicit sex scenes, this story is intended for readers over the age of 18.

Mercy Higgins. Cantankerous Widow. Prized Teacher. Beloved Escort. In an industry where erotic skills matter, she sucks. But, not in a good way.

Mercy is a cantankerous fifty-eight year old African American widow who still mourns the deaths of her husband and stillborn daughter. When catastrophic medical bills threaten her retirement savings, Mercy decides that morality is left to those who can afford it, and she becomes a prostitute hoping to earn money to settle her debts. To garner a client list, Mercy hosts evening soirees, and her house unjustly earns the label of Washington D.C.’s newest brothel. Soon drawn into Mercy’s mad scheme, her middle-aged tenants revel in the spotlight their notoriety has created.

As they navigate the murky waters of social stigma and wield the mercurial moods of their powerful clients, the ladies will test their moral limits and sexual boundaries. Particularly for Mercy, as she handles a young, new—and White—client, Major Jackson Ransom, who is hell-bent on having the older woman, even if it means barreling through her emotional barriers to get to her heart.

#ProductReview: Ozeri Rev Digital Bathroom Scale with Electro-Mechanical Weight Dial

Ozeri 1

The Ozeri Rev Digital Bathroom Scale with Electro-Mechanical Weight Dial was given to me for my honest review. I received no other compensation for this review. The Ozeri Rev Digital Bathroom Scale with Electro-Mechanical Weight Dial boasts the following features:

  • Synchronized electro-mechanical Dial and LCD automatically illuminate and instantly point to your weight in lbs and kg, for easy-to read results in all light conditions and from any angle.
  • Visually stunning design incorporates a huge 5.5 inch dial and integrated digital display with stylish chrome accents to create a distinctive retro look with the accuracy of modern technology.
  • Uses 4 high precision GX sensors that weigh up to 400 lbs (180 kg) in 0.2 lbs or 0.1 kg increments, with StepOn technology that captures precise weight measurements upon contact.
  • Professional quality scale features and an oversized platform made of impact-resistant tempered glass for ideal stability, and a new built-in alarm that reminds you to measure your weight at the same time each day.
  • Auto-calibrated and automatically turns off to conserve battery life. Runs on 3 AAA batteries with a Low Battery Indicator (batteries included). Satisfaction guaranteed.

I am happy to say that I was very impressed with this scale. Below is a picture of the one we were using prior to this review.

Ozeri Rev Digital Bathroom Scale with Electro-Mechanical Weight Dial 1

You can see that it has been very well used. It is approximately nine years old. It has functioned pretty well over the years, but it does have its problems. You have to zero out the scale every time you use it. Tapping your foot on the top used to be all it required, but now you have to stomp on it. Then you have to wait for it to show you 0.0 before you can actually weigh yourself. You have about 7 seconds to get on the scale before it shuts off. I have a short video of how the old scale worked so you can compare to the new Ozeri Scale.

Ozeri Rev Digital Bathroom Scale with Electro-Mechanical Weight Dial 2
You can see the new Ozeri Rev Digital Bathroom Scale with Electro-Mechanical Weight Dial above. This is not only a very nice looking scale, but it seems to be very durable even though it has a glass top. I, sadly, was not able to keep my three year old son from grabbing it at one point. He took it into another room so he could stand on it like mommy and daddy. I was terrified when he put it down that he had broken it, but the scale took no damage to being roughly put down by him.

Ozeri Rev Digital Bathroom Scale with Electro-Mechanical Weight Dial 3
I love that you do not have to zero-out the scale. Instead you step on it and it automatically figures out your weight. The display lights up bright blue allowing you to read it easily in the light and the dark. You also do not have to wait for the scale to go back to zero before another person gets on it. It will go back to zero and weigh the next person automatically. You can see from the two images below that the new scale is pretty close to what my old scale said I weighed when I tested them. I even tried them in different rooms just to see if that would make a difference. The new one is probably more accurate.

This is a fantastic scale. I would highly recommend it to someone looking for one. It even goes up to 350 lbs which a lot of scales don't go over 300. I am very happy with it.

#BookReview: Uncle Bear’s Mystery Valentine by C. JoVan Williams #PromoBookTours

Uncle Bear’s Mystery Valentine 2
Title: Uncle Bear’s Mystery Valentine
Series: Chef ReCee Jay & Friends, Book 3
Author: C. JoVan Williams
Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform
Description: What’s a bear to do when he has no money, but wants to give a gift to thank his secret admirer?

Review: This is a cute children's book. I received it as a pdf and put it on my kindle. It really didn't convert well for kindle viewing, but I was able to read it any way. The art is cute and the story itself is written in a nice flowing rhyme. It reads like a poem that I think kids would enjoy and understand easily. The story itself is about a best who receives s secret Valentine present on his front porch. He is so happy with his present that he comes to realize that he must leave one in return. Since he has no idea who left him the Valentine, he needs to think of something that he can leave on the porch for his mysterious Valentine to find. The problem is that he has no money, isn't very crafty, and just isn't sure what would be appropriate to leave. His friends come to his rescue, helping him create chocolate truffles for his Valentine. They are all surprised by who left the original present, but happy as well. It's very cute. The book ends with the actual recipe for the truffles, which I am planning to try, and a few coloring pages that matches pages in the story.

IBF Meet The Author: Kristina Circelli #Giveaway

Meet the Authors

Introducing Kristina Circelli:

Kristina Circelli

Tell us a little bit about your book(s) and yourself.
Eccentric, crazy cat lady, avid reader, wannabe treasure hunter. I’m a little weird – good thing I’m a writer! Writing has always been one of the most important things in my life; I’ve always said writing is the only thing that makes sense to me. I understand words and love how it feels to piece them together. That translated into a passion for writing pretty early on, and I wrote my first book at 15 – and kept on writing.

I have many different interests, so my books take on many different genres and plots. I suppose I like to break some of the rules when it comes to my writing. If everyone else is writing a genre or trend, I’ll do the opposite just to be difficult . I like finding new topics with each book I write so my readers never know what to expect (this could be a very good or very bad thing). But overall they tend to tell a bittersweet tale, and I’m known to kill off a few characters in every story.

When was your first book published?
My first book, The Helping Hands, was published when I was 17 (2004) and its sequel when I was 19. I took time off for school and work, and published my next one, Beyond the Western Sun, in 2010. I have 10 novels total now. The Helping Hands books have since been reprinted with a new company so I can better market them as well as expand upon the series.

Why did you decide to become an Indie Author?
I’ve been with a publisher and we parted ways due to creative differences. As an indie, I love the freedom I have and that I can do things on my own schedule. Everything is my choice, from the characters’ names to the cover to the price. I guess you could say I like having control. But more than that, the culture itself is fantastic. My best friends are all indie authors and I’m so happy to have met them through the indie world.

Are you currently working on anything?
Oh yes, lots of stuff! My new book, Fragile Creatures, is out February 25th. It’s my first YA Contemporary, about a teenage girl’s journey of healing at a wildlife preserve after her father’s death. As for my works in progress, I’m working on a nonfiction dedicated to raising awareness about a brain-eating parasite (my cousin lost her life to it a couple years ago), and a contemporary adult fantasy/romance with knights.

Who and what inspired you to write?
I don’t know that I ever had one certain inspiration to start writing, other than I just always loved to create. I’d look at a rock or a bug or a family and instantly build a story around it. You could say my imagination has always been too active for my own good. My mom got me hooked on books very early on, so I was always a big reader and got to see other people create stories and figured, why not me too? Poetry, short stories, novels, I wrote them all. Mom was a huge inspiration in that she always encouraged me to write and to the day remains my biggest fan.

Each author has his or her own inspiring journey. How did you begin writing?
I guess that’s kind of answered above. To expand, I started writing short stories and my mom always acted like each one was the best thing ever written. Even though NOW I know she was full of it, at the time that encouragement gave me the drive to write even more. As I grew, so did my writing style to what it has finally matured into today.

When I was first published, ebooks weren’t even a thing. You either were traditionally published, or no one knew who you were. All of that changed in a relatively short amount of time, so it was an adjustment getting caught up again in this new indie world after a good five years off. But, this new world has opened up so many doors. I’ve met amazing people, written more books, reached more readers, had the chance to teach college writing classes, and even fulfilled my childhood dream of owning my own editing company for authors (Red Road Editing – shameless plug).

It’s funny to look back on those first stories and know that while they certainly were creative, the style is just so different than what it is today (in other words, it went from awful to interesting, haha). I love where I’m at now.

What is on your writing playlist for your book(s)?
I don’t actually have one. To be honest, I’m not a big music person. If I’m listening to music, it’s film scores. I haven’t listened to the radio in probably two or three years, unless it’s Christmastime music.

Who is your favorite character in your books?
That’s like asking which of my kittens I like more. I love them equally . Melanie O’Conner of The Helping Hands series will always have a special place in my heart. She was my very first book character, and she’s so rough and tough while equally vulnerable that she’s taken on a life of her own far outside what I ever imagined she would be. I also completely love Whisper of The Whisper Legacy. She embodies everything I love about my Native American heritage, and her intense focus and unwavering courage are inspiring to me. Further, I am a big fan of Tyler Mason from The Helping Hands, for his devotion to Melanie combined with his refusal to take any of her shit.

What is your favorite book of all time?
Ah, man. This is a hard one. I honestly can’t pick one because each of my favorites gives me something different. The Neverending Story and Peter Pan are my go-to books, the stories that inspired my imagination and still fascinate me. I re-read Dreams Made Flesh by Anne Bishop constantly because I love the character of Lucivar Yaslana (you want to talk about a book boyfriend, holy Hera he’s it). And I also love Dance upon the Air by Nora Roberts, because it gave me hope in a time when I really needed it.

Tell us in one sentence why we should read your books.
I like to go against the grain so my readers always have something different – every one of my books varies from the others either in genre or subject matter, yet have that similar underlying theme of the flawed, strong, and at times fragile woman overcoming everything the world throws at her.

A lover of the written word since the time she first picked up a pen, Kristina Circelli shares her passion for fiction in her multi-genre novels.

The Helping Hands
The kidnappings of seventy-one children began the legend, but five friends with troubled pasts and courageous futures created it.

Melanie O'Conner was known to the world as the seventeen year-old bad-ass delinquent of Knoxport, California. A drug dealer, a junkie, a criminal, she had earned her reputation through the leadership of the much feared rebellious gang called the Hell Hounds.

But there was more to her than met the eye, the side she kept hidden from others with her rough-and-tough exterior and relentless, sharp green eyes. Her past, filled with the pains of foster homes and merciless, cold-hearted guardians had created within her a deep, undying devotion to saving the lives of children who were victim to child abuse. Bringing them to a secluded island called the Treehouse, Melanie and her gang fed, schooled, and cared for them all, leaving to the parents nothing more than a message claiming that their child had been taken.

Now, four years into the project that had been given the name the Helping Hands by the members of the cover-up gang the Hell Hounds, Melanie has to fight to keep the nosy, self-interested television reporter Stephanie Mathews from exposing the truth behind the Hell Hounds.

And Melanie is willing to do anything to save the lives of the children from their abusive parents, even if that means risking her own.

The Iron Fist
When one of their own was murdered, everyone feared it would be the end to the Helping Hands. But as they are now learning, the real difficulty lies not in mourning the loss of a friend, but in protecting the project that took his life.

Kelly Mitchell is dedicated to just one thing - protecting her little sister from their stepfather's wrath. When her family moves to San Francisco, she struggles to keep her home life a secret, avoiding the charms of her neighbor, Robbie Anderson. But when her stepfather sets her up and sends her to a juvenile detention camp, Kelly will attain her own protection in the service of Melanie O'Conner.

Forcing herself back into society as a reformed rebel, Melanie finds herself surrounded by a life filled with friends, security, and family. But the illusion of a life without disaster is shattered upon the discovery of a new, unplanned gang of Helping Hands, and two cops threatening to put her back in prison.

When faced with the copycat gang that brings the FBI to her front door, when Kelly and her sister plead for an escape from the iron fist of their abusive stepfather, when Tyler lands in the hospital and faces death, Melanie must decide which is more important - having a normal life away from the burdens of her past, or protecting the project that granted her that life.

Whatever choice she makes, someone must suffer the consequences.
