The Early Buzz

"I just LOVED this little book. Empowering for young girls, and at the same time powerful for young boys... The illustrations are perfect for this book: fun and eye-grabbing, and I also love that it includes facts about popular icons like Aretha Franklin and Baseball legends. Well done! " ~ 5 Star Review, Mariana L., Amazon

"Roxie Rogers is an inspiring read for all ages, truly. It speaks to that little voice inside all of us telling us "come out" to the real you. The artwork brings the story to life, and the text is great for read-along or for young readers on their own." ~ 5 Star Review, Laura, Amazon

"I just read Roxy Rogers to my 5-year old daughter and we both loved the book! The story was fun and engaging filled with dynamic illustrations. Besides the great life messages woven into the story, I really like how the story reads. It is really nice to experience a children’s book that is not mind numbing in its repetitiveness (you know the type) with words that flow easily off the pages. " ~ 5 Star Review, Wendigo, Amazon

About the Author: Emily Siskin-Toy

Emily Siskin-ToyA U.C. Santa Cruz banana slug alum, Emily Siskin-Toy launched her writing career with posts at various film and television magazines in Los Angeles. After a break in the action to raise her daughter, Emily and her college sweetheart founded WOW! Music Studios, a successful children’s music instruction school in Mill Valley, California.

But just like the character in her book, Emily’s true passion was something entirely different; she always dreamed of writing children’s books. Inspiration was everywhere for Roxy Rogers: Your Destiny Is Calling. While coaching her daughter’s youth softball and basketball teams, Emily eventually came to realize that the world of sports was a passion of hers, not her daughter’s, who really wanted, of course, to be a singer. The plot of the story was right in front of her, and the surrounding details would be cultivated from her lifetime of love for the rich history of Major League Baseball and her daughter’s love of music.

#BookBlast: Anthem's Fall by S.L. Dunn #PromoBookTours

Above a horrified New York City, genetics and ethics collide as the fallen emperor and a banished exile of the same herculean race ignite into battle over the city's rooftops. In the streets below, a brilliant young scientist has discovered a technology that can defeat them both, yet might be more terrible than either.

Set both in modern New York City and in the technologically sophisticated yet politically savage world of Anthem, Anthem's Fall unfurls into a plot where larger than life characters born with the prowess of gods are pitted against the shrewd brilliance of a familiar and unlikely heroine.

The young emperor Vengelis Epsilon narrowly escapes the reckoning of his empire at the hands of strange machines known as Felixes. The Felixes are identical in every respect to the godlike men of Vengelis's world save for their mechanical blue eyes. Feared to be indestructible, the wanton holocaust of the Felix appears inescapable. His family murdered and his empire maimed under a shadow of destruction, Vengelis pursues the pained final words of his dying mentor, and sets course for a remote and unchartered world--our world.

The son of the man who created the Felixes, Gravitas Nerol has spent four years in lonely exile. His crime? When the Lord General of the Epsilon Army ordered the genocide of a vastly inferior race, Gravitas refused him. A warrior to his marrow, Gravitas has cast aside his former life and committed himself to the pursuit of knowledge.

Kristen Jordan is a young and talented graduate student working on a cutting edge research team. Their wildly inventive new biotechnology, the Vatruvian cell, is the celebrated milestone of modern science. Yet Kristen remains uneasy about the capabilities of the inexplicable Vatruvian cell, and as their project develops, it begins to ring oddly familiar to the perilous technology of Vengelis's home.

#BookReview: The Last One by Tawdra Kandle #PromoBookTours

The Last One

Title: The Last One
Series: The One Trilogy, Book 1
Author: Tawdra Kandle
Publisher: Hayson Publishing Cooperative
Description: +++This is a New Adult Romance, intended for readers over 18. It contains scenes for mature readers.+++

Meghan Hawthorne is restless. The last year has been a roller coaster: her widowed mother just married a long-time family friend. Her younger brother unexpectedly became a father and a husband. Everyone's life is changing. . .except for hers. As she begins her final summer of college, Meghan's looking for excitement and maybe a little romance. When Sam rescues Meghan alongside a dark Georgia backroad, she falls hard for his deep brown eyes and slow drawl. But making him see her as more than just a party girl won't be easy. Sam's tempted by the fiery young artist, even as he realizes that giving into his feelings will mean radical change. . .maybe more than he can handle.

Nobody ever said love was simple.

Review: I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I found myself thinking about it constantly while reading and even now that I have finished it, I keep thinking about it. Meghan is a art student in college and taken an opportunity with ArtCorps. It's like the Peace Corps, but they send art students to places that have cut their art programs in school in order to create summer art programs. Meghan joined this group and was picked to go to a small town only about an hour away from Savannah, Georgia (whether she attends college). The only problem with this is that she and her best friend went to this town not that long ago which resulted in her getting drunk, her car breaking down, and the wonderful man that helped them chewing her out for being irresponsible. Meghan was embarrassed and not thrilled at all to be placed in his town for the summer. The whole situation got worse when she discovered that she would be living in said man's house. Sam was just as shocked to discover the living arrangements. What Sam was perhaps even more shocked about was his growing attraction for Meghan, the "too young for him" artist his sister arranged to teach the kids of his town.

The story will keep you excited and looking for more. I was very happy to discover the connection to Tawdra Kandle's book The Posse, which is another fabulous read. I am also looking forward to reading the next one in this series. Each book is a stand alone and you won't get too much information to spoil reading one of the others, but my personal preference is that you read The Posse and then read this one.

#BookReview: Frizzy the S.A.D. Elf by Dorothea Jensen #MDBookReviews

Frizzy the SAD Elf

Title: Frizzy the S.A.D. Elf
Series: Izzy Elves, Book 4
Author: Dorothea Jensen
Publisher: Independent publisher
Description: The Santa's Izzy Elves stories are not your usual picture books: older kids who enjoy playing with words and reading rhythmical verse will love them, too!

One reason for this is that although these stories echo the famous 19th century poem, "A Visit from St. Nicholas" Santa's Izzy Elves are definitely 21st century, with electronic devices galore in their North Pole workshop!

In this fourth story of the series, Frizzy, one of Santa's Izzy Elves, styles the hair of Christmas dollies, but misses them dreadfully when Santa takes them away on Christmas Eve. (She suffers from S.A.D.: Seasonal Affection Distress.) Frizzy decides she needs to change her job so she doesn't get so attached to the toys she works on. She starts making something completely different but soon finds that her plan isn't going to work out exactly as she intended!

Frizzy the SAD Elf 2

Review: Frizzy is an elf who works for Santa Clause. She works in the doll department where she makes each doll beautiful for all the children for Christmas day. She spends all year enjoying what she does until Christmas morning when all the dolls are taken way. She puts so much time and love into each doll that it is very hard to see them go. Her condition is called S.A.D. which stands for Seasonal Affection Distress. It's not uncommon, but her sadness makes Frizzy not want to do her job any more. She tries to work with monster trucks, something that isn't beautiful so that she would not become attached to her toys. However she finds herself missing her old job and instead starts beautifying other elves and her monster trucks as well. This leads her right down the same path until Santa realizes the problem and steps in. Santa starts a new "program" for lack of a better word where each elf gets to keep their favorite toy on Christmas day. They pour their hearts into each one, but whichever one steals their heart will be theirs to keep in order to keep the elves happy.

I am not really sure what the lesson is to be learned from this story. It's a cute story and one that I can see being read at Christmas time to show how generous Santa is. I kind of feel like it encourages kids to be upset until they get what they want though even though Frizzy didn't really know what she wanted. There's the downside of the book. The upside: cute story, great rhyming and poetry, and really cute art.

About the author, Dorothea Jensen:
Dorothea Jensen

Dorothea Jensen was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and grew up in Chillicothe, Illinois. She majored in English Literature at Carleton College. After graduation, she taught high school English, then served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in South America. Later she earned a masters degree in Secondary Education at the University of New Mexico. She has lived in many places, including: Brazil, Tennessee, New Mexico, Virginia, the Netherlands, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, and New Hampshire. Married to her Carleton classmate, David, she has three grown children and six grandsons.

Dorothea began her writing career with a friend, Catherine Allen. Both women were Jane Austen fans, and felt that they could write a better faux Austen novel than those which were popular in the 1980s. Despite the fact that they lived hundreds of miles apart, together they wrote three romantic comedies set in Regency England, under the pen name Catherine Moorhouse. ADRIANA, LOUISA, and DOROTHEA were published in 1983 and elicited excellent reviews. Collaborating again more than thirty years later, Dorothea and Catherine recently revised the Catherine Moorhouse Regency Trilogy and adapted the three romantic comedies as Kindle books. In doing so, they discovered that collaboration is far easier today, using computers, e-mail, and the internet, than it was three decades ago, using typewriters, carbon paper, and the U.S. Mail.

Following the successful publication of her joint venture with Cathy Allen, Dorothea went on to write by herself. The result was THE RIDDLE OF PENNCROFT FARM, her award-winning novel about the American Revolution for young readers. Named an International Reading Association Teachers' Choices Selection soon after publication, it is read in classrooms throughout the U.S.

In 2014, THE RIDDLE OF PENNCROFT FARM won a first place Purple Dragonfly Award in the historical fiction category, and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt published an e-book edition of this book. Over 120,000 copies of THE RIDDLE OF PENNCROFT FARM have been sold since its original release.

TIZZY, THE CHRISTMAS SHELF ELF was Dorothea's first illustrated story in verse, which she wrote for families to read aloud with their elementary school-aged children. She has now completed three sequels: BLIZZY, THE WORRYWART ELF; DIZZY, THE STOWAWAY ELF, and FRIZZY, THE S.A.D. ELF. Modeled on the 19th century classic poem, "A Visit from St. Nicholas", these story poems feature decidedly 21st century elves. The Tizzy and Blizzy stories are recipients of a 2013 Mom's Choice Award in the e-book category. The Dizzy book was "Story Monster Approved" in May, 2014 and received a 2014 Purple Dragonfly Honorable Mention in the Picture Books Age 6 & Older category.

Santa's Izzy Elves stories are available in fully illustrated e-book and trade paperback editions, and as audiobooks narrated by the author herself. Dorothea plans to write a story for each of the remaining Izzy Elves -- Bizzy, Whizzy, Fizzy, and Quizzy.

Dorothea recently finished an another historical novel for young readers, called A BUSS FROM LAFAYETTE. It is set in 1825 in the small town in New Hampshire where she has lived since 1991. She is now working on a new novel set in 17th century Massachusetts, called A SCALP ON THE MOON.

In addition to writing, Dorothea is an experienced actress and singer. She performed with the Ex Machina Baroque Opera Company in Minneapolis, and also played most of the Gilbert and Sullivan battle-ax contralto and ingenue mezzo roles with companies in Philadelphia and Minneapolis. The last time she played a ditzy G & S teenager was when she was 44, which required a wig, contact lenses, false eyelashes, and plenty of make up!

Play Nice Hercules

Title: Play Nice, Hercules!
Series: Mini Myths Board Book
Author: Joan Holub
Publisher: Harry N. Abrams; Brdbk edition
Description: Hercules is not as interested in “playing nice” as he is in playing strong! But when one feat of strength destroys his little sister’s 12-piece tower, he must use his powers for good to restore the tower and seek her forgiveness. She forgives him indeed, and then shows her own strength by gleefully knocking down the stacked blocks herself! Joan Holub’s expertly focused text pairs perfectly with Leslie Patricelli’s famously humorous illustrations. Includes a summary of the original Hercules’s Twelve Labors myth at the end.

Praise for Mini-Myths: Play Nice, Hercules!

Play Nice Hercules 2

Review: Such a cute book! It is also so very relevant to my little family. I only wish I had this book sooner. I have a four year old son and a nine month old daughter. It is just like the age gap between Hercules and his little sister in the book. Hercules thinks that just because he is strong, he doesn't have to play nice. Then he knocks over his little sister's blocks and makes her cry. He tries to fix it by rebuilding the block tower she had. Getting exactly what he deserves, his sister knocks down his hard work. The two of them then have a great time playing together.

My son wouldn't really sit to look at the book very well. I actually think he thought it was too simple for him, but I made him look at it anyway. He takes toys away from his little sister all the time and makes her cry. He was great with sharing with her when she couldn't move around on her own, but now that she rolls around and takes toys, he takes them back. It's a constant battle to get him to play with the toys she wants when he isn't playing with them. I am thinking I will have him look at this book a few more times in hopes that he understands that eventually he will play the way he wants her to. The art and story is absolutely fantastic.Simple but gets the point across. I really liked how the end of the book had a page detailing very briefly who Hercules was in Greek Myth.

The cupcakes that were hidden inside are ruined, except for one last vestige, which Pandora presents in the hope that her mother still loves her. Leslie Patricelli’s depictions of this physical comedy bring a lively narrative to Joan Holub’s carefully crafted text. Includes a summary of the original Pandora’s Box myth at the end.

Review: Another fantastic little book! I want to collect them all. The art is cute and the simple story is great for toddlers and has a lesson worth learning at an early age. Pandora in this book is a little girl who finds a present, i.e. box. Her mom tells her to leave the box alone and not to open it. If you are reading this review, you have little kids and know that telling a little kid not to open a present is like trying to trap a tornado. She has to touch the box, sit on the box, stand on it, and even bounces on it. Of course all that torture means that the box eventually comes open without her actually opening. Cupcakes go flying leaving her without a wonderful snack. She apologizes to her mommy and expresses that she hopes her mommy still loves her, which of course she does. It is adorable! I look forward to having my nine month old look at it and getting my son to understand the concepts a little better. I really like the last page about the real Pandora myth as well. Something else educational for our young readers.
