When she leaves that life to begin again in a small town in Texas, she finally has the freedom to live as she chooses. There, she meets Kent, a guy whose charm and passion make it hard to stick to her morals.

Dodging his father’s fists and protecting his twin sister made Kent into the man he is today. He learned by watching his mother stay by his father’s side that it’s better to keep relationships simple. Then he meets Nicole. Her sweet smile and genuine response to him land like punches to his resolve. After a lifetime of learning to protect his heart, can he finally let down his guard?

Trust in Me - Winner of the Bronze Medal for The 2013 Reader’s Favorite International Book Awards for Contemporary Romance!

Rich never expected to fulfill his dreams in the town he planned to leave behind, but that's just what he's doing. His reputation as a noncommittal ladies' man might make it challenging to earn respect in the business world, but he's willing to prove that he's serious. In fact, when it comes to pursuing Roni, he's more than willing. But she's taking a page out of his book, not wanting to risk another relationship. Can he convince her that his playboy days are over and that she can trust him with her heart?

Thursday Climax: Trust in Me by Bethany Lopez review

Trust in Me
Title: Trust in Me

Can he convince her that his playboy days are over and that she can trust him with her heart?

Review: I will start by saying that I have not read the first two books in this series. I was approached by the author to see if I was interested in reviewing this book, and I honestly didn't even think to ask if I needed to read the first two books before reading this one. That said, you will be happy to know that you do not have to read them in order. It is entirely possible that you learn some information about the characters in the previous books in this one, but I think that it won't be enough to ruin any of them.

This is a very quick read seeing as I finished it in about three hours. It jumps right into the action and gives you something to think about throughout. The main female character, Roni, starts off the story by being beaten by her husband. She has called her twin brother to come rescue her and she escapes with minimal injuries. Her soon-to-be ex-husband is not so lucky, but once the main part of the story gets going, you will find that whatever happened to her husband is the last thing on your mind. Instead you will be going back and forth between what is going through Roni's mind/heart and what is going through Rich's. Rich is the main mail character who has been longing to be with Roni for quite some time. Of course he is shocked to learn about her history from his time in college yet he is still willing to be there for her. You will find yourself wanting to keep reading to discover where their relationship will go, how Roni manages to rebuild herself, and have a few exciting moments to enjoy as well. It was very entertaining.

Review: This is a very quick read. The third book in the Stories About Melissa series takes place at the beginning of Melissa's sophomore year. This year looks to be shaping up to start off really well since Melissa has had a group of friends over the summer that she is now very close to. She was friends with them previously, but their time together over summer has brought them together even more. Also, a new girl moved in down the street from her that became her newest friend. She just happens to fit in with her group perfectly as well.

The year is going pretty well until the newest member of the group, Cassie, admits to liking Jimmy. At the end of freshman year, Melissa was given the opportunity to start a relationship with either Jimmy or Brian. However, over the summer she was unable to decide between them because she did not want to risk ruining her friendship with either one of them. When Cassie admits her crush, Melissa is faced with the normal teenage pain of not wanting to see a guy she cares about with another girl, but not necessarily wanting to be with him either. Instead of standing in Cassie's way, she tries to give her blessing and starts dating Brian.

What you will not believe is when Melissa ends up losing a really close friend in a car accident. I am not saying who it is, but the way Melissa deals with it shows great strength of character. The event is going to change her and her group of friends forever. I felt it was handled very well and at one point I even shed a tear. I don't know of too many people who did not lose someone in either middle school or high school. It seems to be the natural order of things, but I was surprised when it happened in this story. Definitely worth reading, especially if you have read the first two.

Interview with the author, Bethany Lopez:
  1. When you wrote about the Homecoming (not the dance) what prompted it to be so far into the story instead of at the beginning of the journal?

Dearborn Homecoming is an actual even that happens in early Aug. It would have happened before Melissa's birthday, before she got her new journal, so I decided to have her write about it later. She is in trouble for fighting with Megan, again, and wants to write about a happier event in her life.

  2. This book had a lot less interaction between Melissa and her siblings. Was that to show how self-absorbed a teenager gets or did you have some other underlying reason?

I love writing the interaction between the family members, but as Melissa gets older, I think her reflections will be more on herself than on her siblings, unless there is something that happens between them that stands out.

  3. Melissa was left with having to choose between Jimmy and Brian at the end of xoxoxo. She avoids the decision all summer until she is forced into action. Why didn't she tell Cassie and Jimmy her feelings? Did Brian ever feel like the consolation prize?

She is afraid to change her relationship with Jimmy. She would hate for things to not work out and for them to not be able to be friends anymore. Once Cassie tells her that she is interested in Jimmy and Melissa doesn't say anything, it is too late. I don't think Brian has any idea that Jimmy could be competition for him. As far as he is concerned, he is the one that Melissa has always wanted.

  4. I was shocked with the death of their friend, but I felt like it was handled very well. I think that every teenager is faced with death at some point in high school. What gave you the idea to include it?

Thank you so much. I think everyone has experienced the death of one of their classmates, and whether it was a close friend or not, it had an impact on them and on the school. I wanted to show how everyone would handle sudden a sudden and devastating experience.

  5. Will Melissa's friendships ever be the same?

In high school friends and relationships come and go throughout the years. Nothing will ever be the same as it is when you start high school. If you're lucky, you have a best friend that stays with you throughout, but sadly that isn't always the case.

  6. Where do you see the rest of sophomore year going?

Melissa is about to get in some trouble. Even the most level headed and "good" teen, has that period of experimentation and acting out. TTYL will showcase Melissa's inner bad girl.

Tuesday Talk: XOXOXO Review #CharismaMedia

XOXOXO Picture
Title: XOXOXO
Series: Stories about Melissa, Book 2
Author: Bethany Lopez
Publisher: CreateSpace
Desription: Melissa has learned a lot since her freshman year began, but it isn't over yet! Her world is about to change again with the birth of her new sibling, and she has to figure out how she will adjust to being the eldest of five kids. She, Jess, and Jimmy are inseparable, and she is having a fantastic time although she can't help but miss Brian as she tries to learn how to deal with his relationship with Layla. Everything seems to be happening at once and that is when she is introduced to Ben Campbell, a senior at Dearborn High, who becomes an interesting distraction as he helps her deal with the new developments in her life.

Review: This book was a lot easier to read than the first one, but I think that is partly because I had a better idea of what I was reading. It is once again written in diary format. There still aren't any dates, but I didn't feel like I needed them as much this time. This diary covers the last half of Melissa's freshman year and a good part of her summer vacation. Since life has been really busy, yet uneventful, she writes every couple of days instead of every day. Some entries in the diary are summations of an entire week. This actually makes it a little easier to read because each entry feels more like a chapter in a regular book.

What I found interesting is that her life has changed in a couple of months rather dramatically. She had high hopes and dreams of dating Brian in book one and rekindling her friendship with Jess, but in this book she seems perfectly content to not date at all. That's not to say that she isn't day dreaming about boys, particularly a senior she feels is out of her league, but she isn't actively trying to get a boyfriend this time. She also doesn't write as much about her clothes and makeup like in the first one. You get a feeling of a girl learning to prioritize and maturing. I think that this happens quickly because of the new baby in her family. She is the oldest of now five kids and the youngest, Max, was born with Down Syndrome. This is a touchy subject for me since I have a family member with mental retardation, ADHD, and a learning disability. I was very happy with how Bethany Lopez wrote about Max and how his siblings reacted to him. The book even ends with the entire family doing a walk for Down Syndrome. I was rather touched by this development and happy to see Melissa learning to be more adult about the events in her life.

Interview with the author, Bethany Lopez:
  1. What gave you the idea to write about a freshman high school student?

When I started writing the series, in the fall of 2010, my oldest daughter was a sophomore in high school and my second oldest was in seventh grade, so I wanted something they could both relate to.
  2. Why did you decide to write the books in a diary format? I thought that this was very appropriate for a teenage girl telling the story, but it felt awkward at times for me just because I felt like I was invading her privacy.

It wasn't premeditated, it just sort of came out that way. I found that I liked free writing and this format fit well with that.
  3. Is Melissa or her family based on anyone you know personally?

They are loosely based on my family, my husband and I have five kids. I used stories and scenes from my life in high school, my kids, and my imagination, and combined them.
  4. What made you decide that Melissa’s newest brother Max would have Down Syndrome?

When I was pregnant with my youngest child, there was a time when the doctors told us it was possible that she had Down Syndrome. I researched Down Syndrome and read some blogs of parents of Down Syndrome, and although I was worried that I would handle it wrong, I really wanted to shed some light on how a family would deal with the situation.
  5. I loved how you introduced Ben and his family to the story. I also loved how you showed that there is a support network for families with disabled children. Many people do not realize such things exist and find themselves in situations that could have been avoided with a little education. Will Ben and his family continue to play a major role in future books as part of their support network?

I found out about the Buddy Walk on-line, and they do have one annually in Michigan, although I changed the time of year to fit the story. I really enjoyed doing the research for this book. In Ciao, the third book in the series, Ben is at Basic Training, so we don't get to see him as much, but he will come back on leave in the fourth book.
  6. At the end of the book Melissa is faced with having to figure out if she wants to give Brian a second chance or see if there is something stronger between her and Jimmy. Will we find out more about Brian’s motivations in the next book (since I feel like he isn’t really being true to his word)?

I don't think Brian has ulterior motives, he genuinely likes Melissa and always has, Melissa just needs to figure out if she wants to give him a second chance, or if she is interested in Jimmy.
  7. Will Jimmy ever get the guts to ask Melissa out?

    Yes
  8. How many books do you see yourself writing in this series? Will you write all of her high school years? What can we expect in the future?

I plan to write eight books in the series, two books for each year of high school. You can expect Melissa to explore her relationships with the guys in her life, Jess to find love, and new people to become a part of Melissa's life. She will hit a rough patch and get in some trouble, like every teen does, and fall in and out of love with the guys in her life, in the typical teen fashion.

Thursday Climax: Ta Ta For Now Review #CharismaMedia

Ta Ta For Now Picture
Title: Ta Ta For Now
Series: Stories about Melissa, Book 1
Author: Bethany Lopez
Publisher: CreateSpace
Desription: Melissa begins her freshman year with one goal in mind, getting Brian Jackson to be her boyfriend. She will soon learn that things don't necessarily turn out the way you plan them, the value of true friendship, and the importance of family.

Review: This is a young adult book about a high school freshman. It is written in diary format, and I times feels a little like you are invading someone's privacy. However, I have always had that issue with reading books that are diaries. Due to the format, everything has been written after the fact and there is very little dialogue taking place. My biggest complaint is that there are no dates. I know that is silly especially since when Melissa writes the entries she does try to tell you how much time has passed. I just think that dates would have helped me to follow along a little better.

With that said, the story is all about Melissa and the hardships she faces in the first couple months of her freshman year. Her body has gone through a lot of changes during the summer between middle school and high school, and in typical girl fashion, she is ready to show it off. She is finally feeling confident in her own skin and is eager to enter the world of dating. In particular, she wants to date Brian, a football player and swimmer. She is rather preppy even though she isn't a cheerleader and loves to make herself look good via cute clothes and makeup. What she is not prepared for is for her best friend from forever to decide that she doesn't want to be friends with her, an ok friend to decide to be her best friend, and the boy she likes to actually really like her.

The actual climax, since this is Thursday Climax, comes when her newest friend tries to steal her boyfriend as well as Brian trying to move their relationship to a much more adult level than she's willing to accept. Her ex-best friend from forever returns to her to rekindle their friendship and essentially life returns to the way it was in middle school. It is like reading a high school soap opera. Bethany Lopez captured the essence of a freshman girl perfectly.
