Friday (Non)Fiction: Vicky Finds a Valentine review #IOTours

Vickey Finds a Valentine 1

Vicky Finds a Valentine 2
Title: Vicky Finds a Valentine
Series: A Bird Brain Book
Author: Emlyn Chand
Publisher: Evolved Publishing
Description: Vicky is happy young lovebird with a great life as the Johnson family pet. When her human Marie starts making Valentine’s Day cards for her first grade class, Vicky is definitely intrigued.

“Valentine’s Day is very special,” Marie explains. “It only comes once a year, and when it comes, you have to tell everyone how much you love them. But most of all, you have to find a special friend to be your Valentine.”

A day about love? That’s fantastic! Now who can be Vicky’s special Valentine?

A search begins as Vicky asks anyone who will listen to be her Valentine. Unfortunately, the pretty dolly ignores her, and so do the people in the glass box—and she’s not sure she can trust the family cat’s intentions. Will the day come to a close before Vicky can find a Valentine?

There’s only one way to find out: join Vicky in her hunt for love in this special holiday edition of the color-illustrated Bird Brain Books.

Review: Another cute story by Emlyn Chand. This time the book is about a Love bird named Vicky. She is a pet bird who absolutely loves her life. She actually feels sorry for the birds she sees outside her window because they don't have the loving family that she has in her home. She loves everything about her day, especially when her best friend Marie comes home from school. Marie always tells Vicky about her day and treats her like she's a well loved pet.

Well one day Marie comes home from school and tells Vicky about Valentine's Day while making valentines for her entire class. You remember those days right? Marie tells her how on Valentine's Day you give valentines to everyone you care about and you find a special person to be your valentine. The next day, Vicky goes in search of her special valentine. She tries talking to a doll (who obviously doesn't respond). She talks to the people on the t.v. (who obviously rudely ignore her). Finally she thinks that she has found her valentine in the house cat, but of course the cat nearly eats Vicky while she isn't looking. Marie saves her just in time. Disappointed, but glad to see Marie, Vicky listens like a good friend to Marie as she talks about her day. Marie then gives Vicky the one thing she was searching for, a special valentine because they are each other's special valentine friends. It's a cute children's story with wonderful artwork. I am a big fan of all the Bird Brain Books. I think these are great stories for children of all ages.

Tommy Goes Trick-Or-Treating Review #IOBookTours

Tommy Goes Trick or Treating 1

Tommy Goes Trick Or Treating 2
Title: Tommy Goes Trick-Or-Treating
Series: A Bird Brain Book
Author: Emlyn Chand
Publisher: Evolved Publishing
Description: Tommy is a mischievous little woodpecker who loves to fly to the edge of the forest and watch the people in the nearby suburb. One evening, something strange and exciting happens—people emerge from their houses wearing costumes and carrying colorful buckets with smiling faces on them. What’s even crazier is that they shout a special codeword while standing outside of each house, and are given delicious-looking candy.

Tommy simply must join in the fun. He and his friend, Michael the raccoon, fashion their own costumes and head off to join in the festivities. Thanks to Tommy’s knock-knocking beak and Michael’s quick paws, the duo is able to heist many a candy bar from the unsuspecting homeowners and children.

But are they missing out on the true spirit of Halloween?

Review: Tommy the woodpecker lives to watch the humans. He watches a neighborhood every day from the comfort of a high branch in a birch tree. He loves to do this so much that he puts up with the taste of birch even though it isn't his favorite. While watching the neighborhood one day He sees the kids acting very strangely. They are all wearing costumes and shouting at the doors. His friend Michael the raccoon shows up and tells him about Halloween. The two of them decide they want to join in the fun as well. It takes them a few tries to figure out the rules (I.e. say "Trick or treat", wear a costume, and knock on the door) but eventually they get someone open a door only to be denied their hard earned candy. The only solution they have after playing by all the rules is to steal the candy. They steal all the candy and eat until they have belly aches. The problem is that b there's way too much candy leftover. The lessons they learn? They shouldn't steal. They should share. Halloween isn't for animals. Of course they also learned how to properly trick-or-treat. This would be a great story for early trick-or-treaters. The art is as always wonderful and the lessons are all of great value.

Wordy Wednesday: Davey the Detective Review #IOBookTours

Davey The Detective 2
Title: Davey the Detective
Series: A Bird Brain Book
Author: Emlyn Chand
Publisher: Evolved Publishing
Description: Davey dubs himself the luckiest crow in the entire world when he finds a wonderful, shiny object. It even has a fantastic name: “paperclip.” Wow!

One dark and dreary day, Davey’s treasure goes missing, and he is beside himself with grief. Luckily, he knows just how he can find out which of the forest animals is to blame for the theft. Inspired by the torn pages of a Sherlock Holmes story that were used to fashion his nest, Davey calls on the help of Sarah the sparrow to investigate the mystery and, hopefully, retrieve his prize.

Together the two birds begin to collect clues. Their trail leads them straight to Mr. Bushtail, a greedy squirrel who keeps a giant store of objects in a hollowed-out tree trunk. When Mr. Bushtail refuses to cooperate, the two birds have no choice but to break into his tree house in search of the truth.

Justice will prevail and treasure will be found in this intriguing tale of mystery.

Review: Bird Brain books all tell a story from a bird's perspective in order to teach some lessons. In this story, Davey finds a paperclip and hides it in his nest right before bed. This is a characteristic of certain birds where they hoard shiny objects. When Davey wakes up, he digs through his nest for his treasure only to find it missing. Instead of calmly looking for it he decides that his treasure must have been stolen. He uses this as an opportunity to become a detective, something he has always dreamed of doing. He acquires a sidekick and goes in search of his lost paperclip. During his adventure, they accuse a completely innocent deer of being a thief without any real evidence. They also assume a squirrel is guilty and sneak into his home at night, destroying his stacks of nuts and scaring him in his sleep. The result of these assumptions is that Davey's sidekick finds his paperclip in Davey's nest right where he left it. You may be wondering what lesson a kid might learn from this story. I see a couple of lessons here. When you assume you make...Oh you probably know the rest of that one. Never trespass. Never accuse someone of something you aren't certain they did. The end of the story tells us that Davey learns the value of a real friend as well. Of course if you haven't read a Bird Brain book before, you really need to check out the art. The illustrations are always cute and sometimes humorous as well.

Tuesday Talk: Honey The Hero Review #IOBookTours

Honey the Hero 2
Title: Honey the Hero
Series: A Bird Brain Book
Author: Emlyn Chand
Publisher: Evolved Publishing
Description: Honey, an inquisitive young parakeet living in the Australian Outback, decides to become a superhero after she spies a human family watching Superman. Since she already has the power of flight, all she needs to do is create a costume to conceal her true identity and then fly off in search of animals that need rescuing.

Unfortunately, every time she tries to help, Honey only ends up making matters worse. She spoils Kangaroo’s game of hide-and-go-seek by revealing his hiding place to Wallaby; Mr. Anteater must go hungry when she alerts the ants to his presence, and Mrs. Koala is made a laughingstock among bears when Honey pretends to be her Joey. Finally realizing that she’s not as heroic as she’d like, Honey gives up her day-saving efforts.

But what happens when someone actually needs Honey’s help? Will she rise to the challenge?

Review: Honey is a parakeet living in Australia. She is a very adventurous bird who loved to watch everything around her. One day she sees a family watching a movie about a super hero and decides that she wants to be a super hero too. The adventurous bird flies around the outback trying to help other animals only to fail three times. However, the lesson of the story shines through here to show kids that you shouldn't give up and that even though you are small, it doesn't mean you can't help others. Honey is finally able to help a baby dingo making her the hero of the day. It's a cute story to help kids learn to never give up on their dreams, to be persistent, and size doesn't matter. As always, I love the cute art in these Bird Brain books.

Friday (Non)Fiction: Poppy The Proud Review #IOBookTours

Poppy the Proud 2
Title: Poppy The Proud
Series: A Bird Brain Book Author: Emlyn Chand
Publisher: Evolved Publishing
Description: Poppy is the prettiest peacock in the entire garden, but one day his privileged existence is upset when an all-white peacock is born and promptly named the most beautiful by a smitten flock. Intensely jealous, Poppy no longer knows where he fits in and decides to reclaim his title as the fairest bird in all the land, no matter what it takes.

In a desperate attempt to regain the admiration of his peers, Poppy steals items from the humans that visit his park. He wraps himself in a beautiful silk scarf, wears a series of ornate bangles around his neck, and even tries to dye his feathers with colored dust from a festive Holi celebration. Unfortunately, each of these attempts not only fails to improve his appearance, they actually make it worse. What’s a poor bird to do?

In this compelling tale of self-esteem, pride, and learning what makes each of us special, Poppy the peacock discovers that true beauty lies beneath the feathers.

Review: Poppy the Proud is another bird book by Emlyn Chand that is designed to help teach children some lesson in a fun way. This particular story is about being too prideful. Poppy is a peacock. We mostly associate such words as regal, proud, elegant, and beautiful to peacocks because of their unique feathers, bright colors, and strut. Emlyn has used the image of a peacock to portray what happens when you are too proud and "expect" certain things to happen. Poppy was always adored and other animals in his park fawned all over him to give him whatever he desired. This had been the way things were his entire life until a solid white peacock showed up one day. In one day, all the other animals seemed to forget that Poppy existed. Well you can guess that Poppy was not happy about this. He decided that he needed to change his appearance in order to gain their attention once again. He tries a couple of changes that all result in him being a laughing stock, damaging his pride even more than being ignored. The result? Well Snow, the white peacock, eventually shows him that beauty is something that is really on the inside. He was beautiful on the outside before, but Poppy really needed to learn how to be beautiful on the inside. In other words, he needed to be less proud. Poppy learns his lesson and also makes a new friend. It's a very cute book. I love the art that appears in these books very much. I think kids of a wide variety of ages will find the story entertaining and perhaps learn the lesson as well.

Review: This is a cute story about a very adventurous penguin. Courtney wakes up one morning to discover presents. It's her first Christmas and Santa has given her a compass. She couldn't have even asked for better gift since she had spent most of her days wandering and exploring. The compass would help her to explore more without her fear of not being able to find her way home. So overjoyed with the gift, she embarks on a journey from the south pole to the north pole to say thank you to Santa. The trip takes her 364 days. She arrives on Christmas Eve and learns that Christmas is in danger of not happening because Rudolph is sick. What will Santa do without someone to guide his sleigh? In a moment of brilliance, Courtney says that Santa will have the answer since he is such a smart man to have picked out the compass for her. His solution is to give Courtney a single Christmas wish. She wishes to help Santa save Christmas. Her selfless wish is granted with her entire body glowing like Rudolph's nose. She helps lead the sleigh around the world with their final stop being to take her home.

It's very cute and the art is wonderful. I especially loved the dedication in the front (which will help explain why the series is A Bird Brain Book), "To all the lovely children who chase merrily after geese, imitate ducks' quack-quacking, and throw bread crumbs to swans. The birds love you, too. And they want to tell you their stories."
