Wordy Wednesday: Grim Guest Post & Giveaway #FMBTours

Grim 1
How to Write by the Seat of Your Pants: Outline or No?

An editor once told me that all writers fall into two categories: Architects and Gardeners.

Both are capable of incredible world building, intricate characters and compelling plot lines which captivate the imagination of readers everywhere. But when you’re just beginning on your road to becoming a published author, how do you know what sort of writing style works for you?

If you’re an architect, writing by the seat of your pants will likely leave you staring at a blank screen and a blinking cursor wondering what the heck you’re going to write. If you’re a gardener, the painstakingly methodical process of outlining, crafting character sketches and planning your entire story arc down to finite details may sap all of the enjoyment out of your work. Like your parents always told you, it’s important to be yourself whenever you sit down to create your story. It’s important to breathe life into your characters by utilizing a writing style which helps you best tap into your life experiences.

SIGNS YOU’RE AN ARCHITECHT

Though no two authors are exactly alike, they bear similar traits which may help them identify what sort of writing style may best suit them. Identifying these traits or signs should make it easier for each writer to find the style which works best.

  1. It’s all in the details
If it’s important to you to narrowly define each dimension of your character, your plot and your story arc before you start creating, then you’re going to need in-depth character sketches, scene summaries and overall outlines to use as the bricks and mortar to house the direction of your narrative. All of this prep work will enable you to make sure your character remains consistent and keeps your story believable. Nothing turns away readers faster than a dramatic shift in the personality of a protagonist without the proper warning.

  2. What you’re writing
One of the determining factors in your writing style may be easily defined by what you’re interested in writing. If you plan to write nonfiction, historical fiction, true crime or other stories in which it’s important to do copious amounts of research to maintain story integrity, then it’s best to create blueprints when you’re building your work. The last thing you want is for a reader to be turned off because they have more knowledge on the subject than you do.

  3. Your mind is made up
If you tend to be inflexible during the editing process because it’s important to you as an artist to have your vision carried out strictly brick-by-brick from your initial plans, then you need to present your editors and publishers with clearly defined blueprints to adhere to when they’re trying to refine your manuscript. They’re going to want to know why a character has to look and feel a certain way before they go wading hundreds of pages deep into your masterpiece.

SIGNS YOU’RE A GARDENER

  1. You’re full of manure
Some of the best fiction stories are spawned from only a general idea. This seed is planted, watered and the direction it grows from there may wind up being vastly different from where it started. These sorts of writers thrive on being able to shape and mold their characters on the fly to fit a changing plot line or story arc. These writers tend to leave more of the smaller details to the imaginations of individual readers. A popular example is George R.R. Martin and his Songs of Fire and Ice series. In interviews, Martin says he rarely plans exactly where his story is going.

  2. You get lost in translation
Everyone’s mind works differently. For some writers, there’s no scarier level of Hell than being stuck in front of a computer screen staring at Roman numerals, letters or numbers. They shut down and lose focus altogether during planning. These writers often claim it’s hard to “speak” to their character when ripped out of the scene or story itself and put on paper to be defined by physical traits, clothing, pets, belongings, etc. During your planning stages, it’s important to ask yourself if certain aspects of the character or conflict or plot must be hammered out at that time if it’s blocking you from making progress. If it’s something which can be fleshed out later, then an exact blueprint isn’t necessary.

  3. You like to experiment
Like the choose-your-own adventure fantasy books of our youth, some authors have to try out several paths to wander down before committing to the one they like best. It’s generally accepted that there’s at least three conflicts in fiction novels. Two of the conflicts are lesser ones which upon being resolved help to flesh out the major conflict. These sorts of writers often have to go into the lab and become a mad scientist to mix up the right chemistry experiment to create suspense and carry out the resolution in their novel. These sorts of writers must be patient because it involves creating and destroying several different scenarios before settling on the right one.

Wordy Wednesday: Velvet Excerpt #FMBTours

Velvet
Title: Velvet
Series:
Author: Xavier Axelson
Publisher: Seventh Window Publications
Description: The first novel from Xavier Axelson is set against a backdrop of decadence, privilege, and intrigue. Virago, the royal tailor, makes a discovery that will test the bonds of brotherhood, unravel the forbidden secrets of his heart and threaten the very fabric of his existence.

In a land where cruelty is disguised as allegiance, loyalty is masked by obligation and the laws of sumptuary govern the people, nothing is more dangerous than Velvet.

Excerpt:
I’d been staring at the vast body of water surrounding the ship when I was startled to find a woman, heavy with child standing by my side. She wore a red gown that gathered beneath her ample breasts. The gown fell freely, billowing against her in the brisk sea air. Her red hair hung in two braids threaded with crimson leather. Upon turning her head, small red jewels, woven throughout her hair, caught the light.

“The sea is dark as the grave, and as good at keeping secrets.”

“Who are you?” I asked. Since I’d boarded the ship the day before, I’d conversed only with Seton and my brother, Sylvain. I’d yet to earn my sea legs and everything seemed strange.

“I am Adis, wife of Doremme, the man whose ship you stand upon.” She came closer. “Secrets are only as powerful as those who carry them and the sea is a perfect place to bury what haunts you.”

“You talk as though you know me, and as I am a stranger on this ship, I know this cannot be.” I was about to bow and take my leave when she laughed.

“Fear is not your way, tailor. You were the royal tailor of the king whose land we left, were you not?”

Were the royal tailor… Her words struck at my heart. I felt this truth so keenly that I gripped the ship railings to steady myself.

“I fear only those who know more of me than I wish, and while I am indebted to your husband for granting us passage, I am in no mood for games.”

Though her laughter died, a smile lingered on her lips. “I mean you no harm, but you seem to have caught the interest of my child.”

I looked at her swollen belly. “Your child?”

“This is my third and final.” Her hands caressed her stomach. “She will be a visionary, and in her birth, I will know death. Not unlike your mother. She bore your brother, who I am told is also a visionary. And blind. How fortunate. Those who are physically afflicted see further than those who aren’t. Nature seldom curses without blessing at the same time.”

This time I laughed. “Perhaps you should ask my brother if he thinks himself fortunate. Or better, summon my father from the grave. Ask if he wished his wife lived and his son had sight!”

After this outburst, we grew silent, but the woman did not leave my side.

I closed my eyes and swallowing hard, felt the pull of the stiff fabric scrap tied around my throat. The raucous shrieks of hungry gulls overhead made me look up into the sky. I watched as the birds swooped and mercilessly chased each other. I envied their flight, but cringed beneath their cries. Behind my eyes, I saw white peacocks, heard their shrieks, and felt the crawl of disease. I shuddered, shook my head of further memory, and let my eyes fall upon the distant horizon. Would I never know peace? Or would memories chase me like the gulls chase one another, endlessly hungry and insistent?

When Adis eventually spoke, these questions and memories faded away. “True, your father suffered, but his gifts as a tailor delivered him from the grief of losing his wife and gave him the strength to care for a blind son.”

The truth in her words, stirred long buried pain. While Sylvain’s blind, tumultuous, and bloody welcoming into the world killed our mother, it also strengthened my father’s resolve to care for us at any cost.

I know not what would have become of us without King Killian’s demand for my meager abilities as a tailor. We would have been lost, we owe our king a great debt and service.

My father told this to me one day when I found him bleary eyed and exhausted at his work. I could remember the way his hands trembled, the nerves in his fingers twitching involuntarily as he struggled with buttonholes on a vest meant for Killian’s nephew.

When his voice vanished, a bitter sadness rose in me as the sea’s waves crashed against the ship.

“Say no more to me. If you were not mistress of this vessel I would think unkindly of you!”

Before she could reply, music, soft and familiar reached us. I knew the player of the tune, knew it because my heart leapt at its playing as it did the first time I’d heard it.

“Someone has leant Seton a lyre. How beautifully he plays, and how lucky his hands are healing. He is a man of passion and strength. It is no wonder you found love with him, as he with you.” Adis placed a hand on my wrist. “I am no witch or visionary. My daughter beckons from my womb. I am but a vessel as is this ship. She is my most precious cargo, and anxious to know life. You must forgive me if I have angered you. Her voice comes from my lips, so I am often unaware of what I say.”

The music rose, fell away only to start again, and as it did, I examined the woman, and seeing her kind face, put a tired hand over hers. “There is nothing to forgive. I am the one speaking from another place.”

“Your voice comes from the shores we have left behind. It would be wise to find a new sound to carry with you.”

Beyond her I saw my brother sitting cross-legged, his fox playing in his lap. He seemed peaceful. “I keep staring into the sea hoping it will take the past from me, but it seems I may never know peace.”

“In time, you shall. Nothing is forever, except the sea.” Adis cast her eyes from my face to the expanse of water surrounding us. “She is our eternal mother and will listen to you forever.”

Behind Adis’s rather mystical analogy, I had a sobering thought. “There is so much uncertainty in the world. I wonder if I have done right. Perhaps I could have done better.”

“You left a land soon to be riddled with illness. This alone made it the wisest decision for you all.”

Her knowing so much of my life discomforted me. “Must everything be told in portents and omens? What of reality? What of truth?”

“Ahh truth. It is a funny thing and varied as the sunlight on the waves. I am a merchant’s wife and have seen much in this world. Men who love men, women who love women, even a man who loved a woman he believed to have been transformed into a goat by the tree witches in the north! The world is wide and there are many lands with many kinds of people. You will see soon enough.”

“I have not heard talk of the tree witches since I played at my mother’s feet. Surely they no longer exist!” I replied, incredulously.

“I cannot say. Who can say if they exist or ever really did?” Adis said.

I sighed resignedly. “I have lived a small life in the court of a small king, and I carry the wounds of that life as sure as I carry the clothes on my back.”

“It is not for me to say what you carry with you, but I can give you a piece of advice not from my daughter, but from my own lips: Stop trying to escape what haunts you, instead think long and hard about it. Every detail, every nightmare, dream and transgression. Leave nothing out. Do this until you have expelled the poison, and when there is no more, you will find yourself exactly where you are supposed to be.”

With these words, Adis left me. I stood alone, listening to the sea, the sound of Seton’s music, the distant cries of the squabbling gulls, and my eyes focused on the unknown horizon.

What led me to find myself on the water, destination unknown? The life I knew was gone, broken, and mercurial as the swirling foam frothing in the ships crushing wake.

I would tell myself the story, if only to steal a glimpse at the unknown ending.

How would my tale end? Beginnings are for children; fairy stories begin with “Once upon a time.”

Once upon a time there was a tailor. He knew string, scissor, and pin. He did not know his heart.
My breath caught.

Oh, my heart. Once upon a time, there was a heart and it was not free… I was a tailor.
Once…
No, it cannot begin this way.
My heart knew dangerous things, but now it was free and in it’s new freedom I allowed it to teach me the way my story should begin and knew by wild instinct, if I followed it, I would know the ending, a true, and dare I hope, happy ending.

With no one to listen but the dark sea and the wheeling, crying gulls, I closed my eyes and let my thoughts move with the undulating water, its gentle rocking seeming to urge the release of my torment.

The castle, dark and glorious, loomed up in my memory…

Grim by Joseph Spencer

When everything is taken from him, Detective Adam White must choose what's most important. Does he stick to the heroic ideals which made him a famed paragon of justice and take down a murderous madman? Or does he give in to his vigilante impulses, avenge his wife's murder, and become the type of killer he's hunted for so many years?

About the Author, Joseph Spencer
Joseph Spencer

INTRO
Joseph Spencer is the author of the Sons of Darkness series launched by his debut novel, Grim, on September 1, 2012. Work on his second book of the series, Wrage, is already underway and is expected to be released some time in 2013.

THE ROAD HERE
The Sons of Darkness is a series of paranormal crime thrillers following investigations into mysterious deaths in the central Illinois city of Prairieville. Home of the notorious serial killer, The Reaper, Prairieville has had a history of violence centered on an ongoing feud between the Marino and Black organized crime families. When bodies start showing up again at the abandoned Marino State Hospital, many fear the Reaper has returned. The people of Prairieville are about to find out their problems stem from a supernatural source which has lurked in secret for decades.

THE STORYTELLER’S STORY
As a boy, Joseph Spencer immersed himself in the deductive logic of Sherlock Holmes, the heroic crime fighting of Batman and Spider-Man, and a taste for the tragic with dramas from poets like Shakespeare and Homer.

Before Joseph took to spinning his own tales, he pursued a career in print sports journalism, graduating with honors from Clinton (IL) High School in 1996 and summa cum laude from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale in 2000. He covered such events as NASCAR’s Subway 500 race in Martinsville, the NBA Draft Camp in Chicago, the Junior College World Series, and Minor League Baseball’s Midwest League All-Star Game during a ten-year career throughout the Midwest. Now, he works as an emergency telecommunications specialist with an Illinois police department. The combination of years of writing experience with a background working with law enforcement professionals gave rise to his writing aspirations.

Joseph was married Dr. Amy (Waggoner) Spencer, an accomplished veterinary doctor, on March 14, 2012. He received word his debut novel was accepted by his publisher, Damnation Books, the next day. Joseph and Amy look forward to their honeymoon in Paris in September 2012. Murphy, a 15-year-old orange tabby, is perhaps the most vocal member of the family. The Spencer family enjoys reading Charlaine Harris, George R.R. Martin, Mary Janice Davidson, and most paranormal stories. The Spencers also enjoy quoting movie lines from The Princess Bride, Rain Man, Bridesmaids, and Office Space.

Monday Motif: The Vampire's Hope #FMBTours

The Vampire's Hope 1

The Vampire's Hope 2
Title: The Vampire's Hope
Series:
Author: Danica Winters
Publisher: Books to Go Now
Description: Ellie Smith, an emotionally stunted dancer, finds more than she bargains for after her human life is taken by the vampire, Master Liam. Once inside the Vampire’s underground lair, the Keres Den, she meets Ian, an immortal Viking warrior, who is infiltrating the soulless prison. (New Paragraph) As Ellie begins her training, she learns that the dark tunnels around her are filled with even darker secrets. As the truth of her existence come to light, she is faced with a choice—does she let her past dictate her future, or can she begin to feel again?

Review: This is one heck of a fast read. I read it in a matter of hours. The story jumps right into the action and doesn't stop the momentum until the story is done. Ellie is human at the beginning of the story. She's had a very tough life and finds that there is nothing worth hoping for or even an emotion worth feeling. She is completely numb to everything around her. The only thing that drives her is the need to find a job so she can eat. This need takes her to a bar where she blindly walks into her new life. Lucky for her, she really didn't feel anything as she was killed and turned into a vampire. In reality the new life suits her just fine since she kind of felt like she wasn't alive to begin with. However, as a vampire her emotions actually spark to life (instead of the other way around like most vampires). She finds herself inexplicably drawn to a man named Ian. He is her sole reason for disobeying orders, well him and her still driving need for food. He will show her what it means to feel and also to hope. Hope is the key to everything in her new life. What will happen when she learns to hope and to love? Why was she turned into a vampire? Why does Ian bring out the emotions she never felt she had? You'll have to read to see. Trust me when I say, it won't take long for you to get those answers because you will be done with the book before you know it.

Monday Motif: Interview with Fate's Design author Lola James #FMBTours

Fate's Design 1

Welcome to the Fate's Design tour with Full Moon Bites. I read this book a while ago for another tour group and wrote a review HERE. My review included an interview that is very much about the story itself, so when this tour came up, I decided to ask Lola James some questions that surround her future works (in case you are confused by my interview below). I hope you enjoy it and are intrigued enough to check out all of Lola's works (Unbound, Bound to Remember, Once Upon a Midnight Dreary [collection of short stories by several authors I love], A VILLAIN'S FATE, A Fate Series Short).

Interview with Fate's Design author Lola James:
  1. Where do you see your Fate series going?

Well without giving much away, some of Megan’s dreams come true and she begins to question those around her.

  2. You recently held a giveaway for a lucky reader to name a character in your next book. What was your motivation behind this giveaway?

Well I wanted to get my readers involved and have a fun contest while doing it. That contest was for another series, Spellbound.
  3. Has the winner decided which God/Goddess will be featured in your next story?

She is going to me a new character and she is going to have ties to my favorite character in that book, Dawn. I can’t say more without giving the story away.

  4. Will the chosen God/Goddess actually be based off of the myths or are you basing the character off of the ideas of the winner?

It’s going to be based of something else. But the next book you will see almost all of the gods and goddess show up at some point.

  5. What other books do you envision in the future? Will you run similar giveaways for those?

I will have another contest like that for the third book of the Fate series.

Sunday Scribbles: Power Play Review #FMBTours

Warning: This book is for 18+

Power Play 2
Title: Power Play
Series: Hat Trick Trilogy
Author: Emily Cale
Publisher: Decadent Publishing
Desription: Natalie Fritz didn't need a night of sexual adventure as payment for setting her friend up, but she wouldn't turn it down either. Determined to make sure she gets exactly what she wants, she contacts Madame Eve and requests not one, but two dates for the evening. What she doesn't expect is for those men to be players on her friend's hockey team.

Ian and Todd find that sharing women provides all parties with more pleasure. Finding someone who buys into their theory is a little harder. So they turn to Madame Eve's 1 Night Stand service to locate a partner. When they meet Natalie, they discover a gorgeous woman who turns them on physically and intellectually.

Most relationships are meant to be between two people, but what happens when it takes three to make the night worthwhile? Can they take a leap of faith or will their time be limited to one night?

Review: This book is considered an erotica which means it is not for anyone under 18. It's only 37 pages long so it is a very fast read. I would say this is something you would want to read to just put you in the mood for other pleasures. It is extremely well written and very hard to put down. Natalie is a lawyer who has accepted this blind date set up for her by her friend TJ in response to Natalie having done the same thing for TJ. It worked out so well for TJ that she wanted to give Natalie a chance to experience the same bliss that she had felt. What TJ didn't know was that this night of fantasy was going to truly be something Natalie fantasized and had previously though was impossible. Natalie wanted to be with two men instead of one, so she had to change the date after TJ set it up (and without her knowledge) in order to fulfill her fantasy. You see, Natalie really expected this to be a one night stand and would never feel compelled to see the men again. What she didn't expect was that the duo she faced would be able to give her more pleasure than she had ever experienced. They were so good that she had no desire for this to ever end. I am not going to spoil the ending for you, but I will say I thoroughly enjoyed this story even though I have no such fantasy as Natalie did.

Saturday Satire: Soul Sisters Guest Post & Excerpt #FMBTours

Soul Sisters 1

Digging Into The Mind of a Vampire

Lately, even though people are complaining about all the vampire books coming out there is still a demand for them! There also seems to be a belief that anyone can write a good vampire story without much effort and that just isn’t true. Despite the negative criticism surrounding The Twilight Saga that book connected with millions of people. Love or hate it, the author did their job of finding an audience and satisfying them.

What’s at the heart of writing a good vampire tale is getting into the mind of a vampire. An author has to leave their mortal coil behind and think like a vampire in order to write about one. When trying to make my vampires come to life I tend to try and think about the fact that they’ve been around for a long time and see the world in a different way. Vampires have had so much time to learn about the ways of the world and soak up many different experiences.

I don’t write vampires who mope about being beautiful and immortal. For me there are very little downsides to that so I try to think, where has that vampire been? Who have they talked to? How have their experiences shaped their personality? I find it easy to get into the mind of a vampire as they were human once and often things like. All you have to do is add is add in the factors that their young forever, immortal and have super human strength and you have the mindset of a vampire.

What is something you would enjoy if you were a vampire?

Soul Sisters 2

Title: Soul Sisters
Series: Soul Sisters Trilogy, Book 1
Author: Janiera Eldridge
Publisher: Mystic Press
Description: Soul Sisters is an urban fantasy novel about African-American twin sisters Ani and Dana who have a rather unique secret: one sister is human while the other is a vampire. While the sisters have lived peacefully with each other for many years one fateful night will change both their lives forever. Excerpt:
Chapter 6
1915 New York City

Bryson and Dana walked arm and arm down the blustery New York street laughing about the Christmas party they had just left. The snow was fresh and powdery. Neither of them felt the icy cold snowflakes floating down and speckling their coats because they were wrapped in the warmth of each other’s company.

“Did you see how Charles acted after taking that last shot of whiskey?” Dana asked.

Bryson could not contain his laughter thinking about their friend’s drunkenness. Everyone who had been at the party was probably laughing about it on their way home, too, particularly the part when Charles took off his pants and danced on top of the piano. Bryson laughed so hard people gave them odd passing glances.

“Yes.” Bryson gave a bright smile and grabbed her face to kiss her as they stood in the middle of the sidewalk. He wanted people to stop and stare at his beautiful wife. He wasn’t afraid to show her off every chance he got. The women cooed softly at the sweetness of the moment while the men ushered their women forward murmuring about how indecent their public display of affection was for the community. Truthfully they just didn’t want their wives to get any ideas.

It took Dana a few seconds to catch her breath. She couldn’t believe he would do something that indecent in public. It didn’t matter to her, however, because it felt way too good to be wrong. They stepped off the curb without a care in the world; Dana held onto Bryson’s arm tightly and could not stop staring into his eyes.

A few seconds later Dana felt a sharp pain and a crushing blow to her arm. It was as if a freight train slammed into her right side. She instantly started sobbing from the pain and confusion of the situation. She felt like a block of ice was on top of her chest as she lay sprawled out on the ground. Her legs were straight out together in front of her but her arms were stretched out wide, going in two different directions. Her head turned slowly to the left when she heard a woman screaming and she saw Bryson on the ground with his eyes wide open. She blinked a few times to clear up her vision and then she spotted a pool of blood circling his head like a flowing halo.

Dana tried to push against the woman lying on top of her but the person was impossible to move no matter how hard she tried.

“You don’t want to see this, you’re safe now,” the woman said softly in her ear; she sounded just like her.

“Soul sister?” Dana asked as she felt herself losing consciousness. She heard the chaos of the world going on around her but then she slipped into a black void. When she came to in a small nearby hospital she was disoriented and feeling miserable. There was a dull ache in her head and the vision in her right eye was blurry. She thought she saw a petite woman standing in the doorway, maybe she knew what had happened to Bryson.

“Where is my Bryson? Is he OK? What happened?”

The woman walked over to the bed and placed a hand on her head. Dana could see the woman was wearing a nurse’s outfit and she guessed she was in a hospital. The woman’s hand felt ice cold against her burning flesh.

“I’m sorry to tell you, ma’am, but your husband was hit by a moving vehicle. He suffered a bad head injury and he is no longer alive. I am so sorry.”

“No, wait. We were just coming back from a Christmas party. When did this happen?”

“You stepped off the side walk with your husband, ma’am. Apparently you could not see the car and the car could not see you. A woman who looked oddly like you pushed you out of the way and saved your life. Your husband didn’t make it. I’m very sorry. Would you like some water or a cup of juice?”

“No, no, thank you. Can I see him at least?”

“Not now honey. I really think you should get some rest. There’s a young woman who is here to see you. She says she’s your sister. Are you ready to see her?”

Dana coughed deeply and felt a liquid build up in her throat that she quickly swallowed back down; she was afraid to see who it was.

“OK,” was all she could seem to get out of her throat.

Her soul sister quietly stepped into the room as she faced the wall. She didn’t want the woman to see her nervousness or confusion. As much as she wanted to hug her sister she also wanted to punch her.

“Why didn’t you save my husband?” Dana asked choking back tears but keeping a straight face. As the tears filled up her eyes, her cheeks began to sting and swell.

“The car came so fast. I didn’t have time to save you both. I’ve seen you with Bryson before and I know how much you loved him, I’m so very sorry.”

“What is your name?” Dana asked, sitting up against the pillow.

“Ani,” She said softly.

“Ani, I don’t think I want to live much longer. I sold my soul to save my husband’s life and Donovan took him away from me. I really don’t see any reason to live anymore.”

Ani sat down in a chair and moved closer to the side of the bed. She placed her hand on Dana’s head and felt that she had a slight temperature. She would notify a nurse as soon as she left the room. Ani loved her sister and if her sister died then she died too.

“Donovan had nothing to do with what happened. Your husband’s time came up again and he was taken. Donovan didn’t order his death. I’m sure he is very concerned about this and knows how much this hurts you. He is good at feeling things like this.”

“Your kind feels? You don’t want me to kill myself because then you will die too. Frankly, I don’t care what happens to you right now. You’re such a small fragment of me; I don’t even think you’re real. This is just a bad nightmare. I’ll wake from it; I’ll be at home warm and safe with my parents. Bryson never actually existed and I sure as hell know you don’t either.”

Dana turned her head back to the wall and let the tears flow freely down her face. She placed her hand over her mouth to stifle the cries; her heart felt like it had broken into a million pieces. Now, she couldn’t live for anybody else but herself. Dana saw the look of despair in her sister’s face but it wasn’t enough for her to let her soul sister into her life.

“I’ll never turn my back on you when you need me, no matter how far away you are or how much danger you’re in. I know we’re supposed to be twins but I feel like you’re my baby sister.” She gave a light chuckle and then headed for the door. “I’ll be back to visit you tomorrow, and the next day and the next day. Even if you never want to see me it’s OK, but I’m not going to be without you any longer. I love you way too much.”

“I don’t care if you come back a million times. I will never talk to you again. Get the hell out of my room!” Dana threw a glass at Ani’s head. Ani moved her head slightly to the left as it flew into the wall and shattered into tiny pieces. She took a deep breath and nodded her head up and down slowly; she had to give her more time. Ani had been programmed to take on the evil ways of the world but Dana’s rose-colored glasses had just been stepped on.

Thursday Climax: High Above Review & Interview #FMBTours

High Above 1

High Above 2
Title: High Above
Series: Out of the Ash, Book 1
Author: Mari Freeman
Publisher: Decadence
Desription: Dragons annihilated civilization some ten generations ago. A few Crossbreeds, humans born with dragon-like characteristics, now lead opposing tribes who still battle for dwindling resources.

Rhone’s wings have been stripped from his body, his family killed, and his hopes of leading the Mountain people away from the constant threat of marauders destroyed.

Ketta’s life has been full of pain and anguish. Her brother rules her and the Lax tribe with a bloody fist. Tired of the violence, Ketta takes a stand and rescues Rhone from the brink of execution.

Armed with knowledge from Ketta’s somewhat addled grandfather, the unlikely pair embarks on a quest to heal Rhone’s wings. Along the way, the couple struggles to find the truth beneath hatred and lies. Desire and a mutual enemy bring them together; mistrust and secrets tear them apart. These lifelong foes will have to fly high above their differences to defeat a deadly dragon and save what’s left of both their tribes.

Review: For how much I love dragons, I actually haven't read a lot of books about them. I did read a series about dragon shifters that was mostly enjoyable and that helped peak my interest in this story. I actually had been under the idea that the characters in this book were shifters, but I was wrong. High Above is about a race of mutated humans that have characteristics of dragons. Not everyone has all the same characteristics, except that they have wings from my understanding. Their wings might not actually be able to support their weight for flight. How did humans become mutated with dragon features? Well they aren't completely certain. It started happening generations after dragons destroyed the Earth as we know it. The different types of dragons completely obliterated our world with handfuls of humans surviving in hiding. Over time, these mutations showed up at the birth of new generations. It is suspected to come from the ash covering the planet from the dragon's fiery destruction.

This story focuses on two warring tribes of all-humans and crossbreeds in the California area. One tribe has been ruled to believe that the other tribe is a bunch of murdering savages in the mountains. That tribe simply kills to survive and also steals the limited fuel supply the Lax tribe. The leader from the mountain tribe, Rhone, is captured by Nyx, the leader of the Lax tribe where he he is tortured and loses his wings. Ketta, Nyx's sister, feels pity for Rhone and believes he is the one that will end everyone's suffering. The odd part is that Ketta is the only female crossbreed anyone knows exists. Rhone is instantly attracted to her. Will Ketta and Rhone become an item? Will Rhone unite the tribes and save them from destroying each other? Will Rhone succeed in waking the sleeping Dragon that supposedly will help Rhone grow back his wings? It's an amazing book that you will have to read to find these answers and more!

Maven Fairy Godmother Book Tour Starts Today & Review #FMBTours

Maven Fairy Godmother 1

Maven Fairy Godmother 2

Maven Fairy Godmother: Through the Veil by Charlotte Henley Babb

Maven's new dream job--fairy godmother--presents more problems than she expects when she learns that Faery is on the verge of collapse, and the person who is training her isn't giving her the facts--and may be out to kill her. Will she be able to make all the fractured fairy tales fit together into a happy ending, or will she be eaten by a troll?

Barnes And Noble - Nook

Review: This story is all about Fairies and, of course, fairy godmothers. Maven is actually the name of the main character. She begins the story being at rock bottom. She has used up all her money on rent and her van is running out of gas. She has no job, not even a job prospect. She's been living on coffee, peanut butter, and crackers. She is still holding on to the last little bit of hope she has for finding a way out of her miserable life. She goes to the library to use their computers for job hunting only to discover a book on the art of making wishes. Inside the book is a dollar. This dollar is the catalyst for her entire life changing. Once she found that dollar, she gets a phone call on her dead cell phone about a job interview that she has no idea what the job actually is. The result is that she gets hired to become a fairy godmother and transported from the mundane world to the fairy realm. While training to become a fairy godmother, she discovers that the veil, the wall between the worlds, is coming apart. People have stopped believing in the traditional fairy tales. The fairy godmothers are to keep the old tales alive by maintaining the granting of wishes to further to story line in the direction they have always gone. Maven has trouble with this because she is not familiar with "every" fairy tale out there. She always doesn't like to grant wishes that she knows will not lead to what the person truly wants. She wants to give them what they really desire instead of granting a wish that may or may not be frivolous. A recurring theme in the story is Maven trying to figure out what everyone would actually wish for. What would a dragon wish for? What would an ogre wish for? The ultimate question though is, what will Maven wish for?

It's a unique story that I enjoyed, but had a hard time getting through quickly. My only complaint is about the formatting of the book. It could have just been my ARC copy, but the text was centered on the page and no real paragraph breaks. This drove my eyes crazy and made it a little hard to concentrate on. Otherwise, I enjoyed the plot.

About the author, Charlotte Henley Babb:
Charlotte Henley Babb
Charlotte Babb began writing when she could hold a piece of chalk and scribble her name--although she sometimes mistook ""Chocolate"" for ""Charlotte"" on the sign at the drug store ice cream counter.

When her third-grade teacher allowed her access to the fiction room at the school library, Charlotte discovered Louisa Alcott and Robert Heinlein, an odd marriage of the minds. These two authors have had the most influence on her desire to share her point of view with the world and to explore how the world might be made better. Her current favorites are Terry Pratchett's Discworld and Shelly Adima's Lady of Devices.

In the meantime, Charlotte has fallen prey to steampunk and the gears are turning...corset, bustle and magic, oh my! She brings to any project a number of experiences, including work as a technical writer, washing machine gasket inspector, cloth store associate, girl Friday, and telephone psychic.

She has studied the folk stories of many cultures and wonders what happened to ours.Where the stories are for people over 20 who have survived marriage, divorce, child-rearing, education, bankruptcy, and widowhood?

Charlotte loves Fractured Fairy Tales and writes them for your enjoyment.

About the Author, Patricia Bates

Reading has been such a large part of my life. I cut my literary teeth on such author’s as Louis L’Amour, Nora Roberts and Janet Dailey. For me it wasn’t such a jump from reading the wonderful tales these author’s spun to imagining my own.

Soon I was writing poetry, short stories and by junior high I’d written my first full length romance novel. Since then I’ve taken my love of history and my passion for writing and combined them into what I hope will continue to prove a successful career.

With six books contracted, four of which are currently available in print. All are available in electronic format with the last two ebooks due for a release in May and the other in the summer. I’m currently working on three projects, an erotic paranormal romance featuring a witch who loves Christmas, another Ancient Ireland novel, rich in the history of the Irish Celtic peoples, and plotting out a Cowboy Series tentatively titled “The James Gang”.

Of course I’ve got a lot more on the go. I’m developing and growing my editing company with some amazing authors, working on getting the books that Blade had revamped to fit the submission guidelines for some other publishers and keeping up on my writing and being a full time mom, working outside of the house…its amazing what I can manage in a 16 hour day.

Saturday Satire: The Homeschoolers: The Ballad of Squirtina Excerpt #FMBTours

The Homeschoolers 1

The Homeschoolers 2
Title: The Homeschoolers: The Ballad of Squirtina
Series:
Author: Henry Circle
Publisher:
Description: A mortifying episode of in-school diarrhea sends witty and skeptical Christina Begoni flying into the arms of a holy-rolling homeschool group where she meets "Teenage Sex Incarnate," David, and his alarmingly sweet sister, Sunny. The group is complete when they are joined by two other hardened public school students, Christina's mustachioed younger brother and one deliciously rowdy redneck bully for a raucously funny and often gripping adventure on the Mississippi River. Will Christina be able to fight the wild river, a gun-toting grandpa and her own hilariously heathen ways to hold this group of unlikely friends together?

Excerpt: I stretch my hand up to him, and he bends with his legs wide to stabilize himself. When Ricky pulls, I start gliding through the mud. I can feel the strength and power from his seemingly boney arms. I guess he's what you'd call wiry. But the mud seems to be trying to hold me down. I feel the mud rolling my shorts and underwear down to my ankles. I try to push my free arm under the gunk to hold onto my bottoms, but with one more yank from Ricky, they are long gone. I have no shorts. No underwear. “Stop! Stop a second!” I scream. I scrunch my knees up and wiggle my arms down through the muck trying to find my clothes. I extend my legs down and feel around with my toes. I try feeling through the mud with my hands again. And my feet and hands at the same time. Nothing.

“What on earth are you doing?” Ricky asks. “Give me your hand so I can go on and get you out.” He sticks his fingers out to me.

My eyes are misting over. “I can't come out.” I can't believe this is happening in front of Ricky Kelly. I wish I could just disappear.

Searching the pit with his eyes, he asks, “I can't see nothing. Too dark. What happened? Something caught your foot?”

The last thing I want to do is admit I'm literally half naked, but we have to get out of here and find our friends before something terrible happens to them. This isn't kiddie kiddie play time hour so I buck up and confess, “I lost my stupid shorts in here. I can't find them.”

“You aren't the first girl I've seen in her underwear. Gimme your damn hand.”

“I lost those, too. Can I have your shorts, please?”

Ricky brightens, blooming into a grin as bright as a garden sunflower. Even in the dark of the evening, I can see the foolish look on his face. “Ricky, hand me your shorts,” I repeat.

Excerpt #4:
I watched the whole intriguing show unfold as I made conversation. Everyone seemed as animated as Jon and Gretchen, slapping me on the back, laughing, recounting adventures and stories. Cigarette smoke clouded the eight feet that separated me from the object of my desire. Courtney did her best to avoid looking at me. The dining room staff refilled our wine glasses as if we were guests at a Roman orgy. When the chef invited us to take part in the sumptuous lobster buffet, I rose. I needed a break and some fresh air. Sneaking away, I headed out to the courtyard for a chance to make sense of the scene playing out before me.

I walked to the boathouse and beyond, out onto the dock where I leaned against one of the thick pilings. The festivities inside were so boisterous I hoped not to be missed. Somewhere in the background the sound of loud, gruff voices echoed; commands and laughter came from men a hundred yards into the lake, joking, and scolding each other as they prepared the massive display of fireworks.

I studied the tranquil waters of Sebago. As I was about to turn around and head back to the house I inhaled her jasmine scent and felt the warmth of her slender fingers as she placed them over my eyes.

“A penny for your thoughts,” Courtney whispered, giggling. “Actually, in your case, I’d give ten shillings.”

I took her hands away and turned. She was dressed in her riding clothes again.

“Where did you come from? I didn’t hear you,” I asked, marveling once again at her apparent ability to appear out of thin air. “How did you manage to change so quickly and why?”

“I keep explaining but you don’t listen, Robbie. I’m a witch.” She made a scary face and laughed.

Suddenly I understood. It all made sense. She’d been telling the truth from the beginning. The catch was I assumed she was joking, which she expected. The mysteries, the stories, the smaller group of guests, Simon’s arrival. It all resonated. It was a plan, all of it. I shook my head, feeling disoriented. I had no idea where all this was going. Part of me was terrified. That part wanted to run away, get in my car, and head back to reality. But there was another part. That part felt exhilarated, challenged. Adrenaline surged through me. I had to stay and see how this played out.

Courtney saw my expression. “Are you all right, darling?” she asked.

“I’m fine. I thought you were angry with me, because of my comments about your party. You seemed to be ignoring me,” I said, managing my best pout.

She took my hands. “Haven’t you learned I could never ignore you?” Her voice was sultry, seductive as she pulled me to her. “I understand how confusing and difficult all this must be for you. I really do, dear.” She stood very close, arms hanging around my neck as she began caressing my lips with hers, teasing, playing over and around them at first. Suddenly she found my tongue, doing things I’d only dreamed of. I floated, then sank, drowning gloriously as I fell into the warmth of her supple body. She released me and backed away, giving me a delicious smile. “Does that feel like I’m ignoring you?”

“I could have been mistaken.” I grinned, pulling her close and taking her in my arms. My lips found every inch of hers, the enormous eyes, the sculptured ears, her delicate nose, and that wonderful mouth I could never get enough of. I took its full measure. As I became aroused she rose to meet me, pressing close as our bodies melded. There never was, never would be another woman to excite me this way. Whatever else was happening, I had no doubt that Courtney meant what she said. We held each other breathlessly. I opened my mouth to speak.

She put her hand to my lips. “Don’t even try,” she whispered, her fingers clutching my back. “It would be a waste of breath. There are no words to describe what we feel.” She released me. “Go. Change quickly, darling. Meet me at the stables. There’s a special place where we can watch the fireworks. I’m going to tell you a story. It’s a magical story that will change your life, change both our lives forever.”
