Monday Motif: Swept into the Darkness #PromoBookTours

Swept into the Darkness 1

Swept into the Darkness 2 Title: Swept into the Darkness
Series: Chronicles of the Celestial, Book 1
Author: LaTaeya Lane
Publisher: LaTaeya
Description: Sydney London is no ordinary twenty-four year old. Ever since she was a child she has had unique out of this world abilities. Suffering from a near death experience and surviving a deadly car crash Sydney is no stranger to death and loss. Cut off from the world around her she encounters an Angel and eventually falls for him inspired by deceitful magic.

Her one true love awaits in the shadows attempting to guard and protect her by risking his immortality. Traumatized by the murder of her best friend she sets off on an unspeakable journey to bring the dead back to life. Sydney’s journey of self discovery opens her up to learn of her true angelic identity. She is led in the middle of an inter dimensional war among a hybrid breed of Angel Vampires and the Hierarchy of the Angelic clan. Will her unique powers and the love she bears for her guardian be enough for her to save the Earthly Realm or will she be Swept into the Darkness?

Review: This is very interesting story. The author obviously felt like she had a lot to say because it was near 300 pages. I will say that I had trouble getting through it all. The plot idea was very interesting. Sydney is in a very bad place in her life having recently lost her dad and her mom being admitted into a psych ward after a suicide attempt. Sydney is taking everything one day at a time until her best friend Christine convinces her that she needs to get out for some adventure. It turns out that they used to a lot of adventuring before the accident, so Christine is just trying to help Sydney get back to being her normal self. This vacation is the start of Sydney discovering that she is very special. She is a Nephilim. Her powers have been being hidden and denied to her from some pills she's been taking, but the Fallen angels are now after her for those powers. She must learn to use everything that makes her who she is, avoid the other supernatural creatures that are out to get her, and find the truth behind who she really is. I really liked the plot. I just honestly felt like these 300 pages were more like an outline of a story than the actual story. More often than not it felt like Sydney was telling me a summary of what happened without any major details being explained. I was confused often enough with the dialog that I know the summary of the situation was not really giving me the whole picture. Aside from that, I don't think this story was edited at all. There were incorrect words used periodically. You can easily figure out what the author intended to say, but the incorrect words tells me that if she did have an editor, that person probably shouldn't be used again. The other grammatical thing that absolutely drove me insane was the incorrect use of quotation marks. Many times the dialog started with quotation marks and would have ending quotation marks somewhere in the middle of the dialog. When you read it, you will think that the dialog has ended but the character keeps talking. Normally I would interpret that to indicate that the dialog was continued as a thought, but it became obvious that that was not the case the more I read. Honestly, I was disappointed because I really liked the idea behind it. I am giving this three out of five roses (my new rating system), but really I am being generous.

Monday Motif: Veiled Mist Review & Interview #IOBookTours

Veiled Mist 1

Veiled Mist 2
Title: Veiled Mist
Author: Eleanor T Beaty
Description: On the Caribbean island of Maurray, spoiled-rotten, fifteen-year-old Hanna wakes up to a nightmare. She is not the daughter of an aristocrat but the orphan of a Gypsy. She is the descendant to a mystical Gypsy tribe. Their magic is strong and has lasted six hundred years. Ornella, the tribe's guardian, arrives at the island with her mutt, Count Dracula, to guide Hanna. Hanna is told she must embrace her heritage or die at the ripe age of seventeen. But Hanna does the unthinkable, she chooses death. She hates Gypsies and would rather die. What she doesn't know is that her death will destroy the entire tribe. What she also doesn't know is how persuasive Ornella can be. The nightmare begins.

Review: This is a very different book from the long list of books I have read. I have never read any stories about gypsies, but the paranormal and magical element of this caught my attention. I am glad that I read it too! Hannah is a spoiled rich brat living on the island of Maurray. She comes from a weird family situation. She was told her mother died upon her birth, which resulted in her being given to her father to be raised. Her family has married another woman and they have a son named John. Since they are rich, there is also a maid/cook by the name of Vani in the house. Her grandparents (father's parents) are both very much involved in the family and also live on the island. What is so weird about the family is that her parents seem to be like good friends and never appear to be in love. Actually they seem miserable with each other as far as love is concerned, but for some reason will not even consider a divorce. Both are pretty much absent from their children's lives leaving the real raising to be done by the grandparents.

In raising Hannah, her grandmother Elizabeth has put so many stories in her head about how terrible gypsies are that you have to wonder where this prejudice comes from. Her grandfather has never contradicted the stories other than to say that Elizabeth is going a little overboard. All of this is about to come back to haunt everyone though. A week before Hannah's 16th birthday she starts having weird dreams about being a gypsy and even finds herself dressed/smelling like one at random intervals of the day. To top it off, her mother's doll, which she has loved and cared for her entire life, has been broken. The doll becomes priority number one as she prepares for the day. Luckily for her a new antique doll store literally was constructed and opened over night. This is where Hannah's life will change forever. She meets Ornella, a "good" gypsy who's only goal in life is to find gypsy descendants and help them through their changes to become a member of the tribe. She really has a lot of work for her to change a spoiled brat into a caring and selfless person. She also has to undo 16 years of prejudice while breaking a spell put on her by an evil warlock set to destroy the tribe. What will become of Hannah? Will Ornella succeed in showing her that not all gypsies are smelly, dirty, evil, children stealers? Will Ornella succeed before the evil spell on Hannah literally kills her on her 16th birthday? And what will happen to the doll? You'll have to read to find out more.

Interview with the Author:
  1. Where did you get your inspiration to write about gypsies?

I’ve always had a certain fascination with the gypsies. I love mystery and the mystical along with the spiritual, and gypsies have all three of these elements in their culture and history. Their nomadic ways have lasted for centuries. We don’t know where they came from, nor where they will go. Their belief in magic and their fortune-telling combined with their obsessions of amulets and gold just turns them into fascinating people. And they can be scary too. I’ve had a gypsy walk up to my aunt inside a hospital elevator, grab her hand and tell her something that would happen a few days later. My aunt was going through a tough time and the gypsy gave her hope. Most don’t do that without asking for money but some, like this one, do. And when they do, believe in them because they were sent by a higher power. I wanted to create a character to represent that gypsy we crossed paths with.

  3. Did Hanna’s mother ever actually appear to be the type of gypsy that Elizabeth felt would destroy their family’s business, or did she just have some other bias against her?

There was nothing about Hanna’s mother that said gypsy, as the tribe is meant to blend in with society. Elizabeth is a snob, very biased and even a racist woman. She herself wasn’t from high society. She bought her way into it by marrying John, and you’ll find that usually people who do that are the most prejudice of all.  Just the fact that Hanna’s mother was a waitress already made Elizabeth not want her near her son. Then comes Boris who tells Elizabeth Hanna’s mother is a gypsy from a horrible evil tribe, and that seals the poor girl’s fate.

  5. Hanna was a spoiled brat in the beginning of the story. Was this because of her grandmother or something that her father and step mother had done?

Elizabeth, her grandmother, was the biggest influence in Hanna’s life. She was very careful to marry her son John to Camilla, a woman whom she could manipulate and who would never interfere with her control of the family. Hence, Elizabeth is the only female role model Hanna has.

  7. Ornella had a lot of unusual potion components, but the one that I noticed over and over was pee. She had pee from all different kinds of creatures (as well as a baby). Why did you use so much pee in the story?

Because pee, or urine, has Urea and, in concentrations up to 10m, Urea is a powerful protein denaturant, as it disrupts the noncovalent bonds in the proteins. This property can be exploited to increase the solubility of some proteins in the potions.

Kidding. I got that from Wikipedia because I loved your question. Potions have to have those weird and gross components so pee was a favorite option without making it too gross. Also, gypsies use many elements from nature in their potions. What could be more natural than pee? And my editor and I got carried away when reviewing. He added a few strange pees too.

  9. How many of the rumors started at school about Hanna were actually Susan’s doing instead of Alistair’s?

Alistair was behind all the rumors involving Hanna’s visit to Vival. He wanted to humiliate her the way he believed she had done to Ellie, because of Ellie’s origin. He hoped to weaken Hanna’s power and influence over the other students. He would never use Hanna’s mother against her having lived through a similar situation with his.

Susan, on the contrary, doesn’t care that her mother is a kleptomaniac, as there are plenty of those in high society. She attacked Hanna’s royal ancestry, which Hanna rubbed into Susan’s face every chance she got, because she wanted Hanna’s throne. As Hanna says, there’s always rehab for vices but none for bad ancestry.

  11. Shameless plug time! What can we expect from you in the future?

Fallen Ruler, to be released soon. The novel differs from Veiled Mist as it mixes paranormal with Sci-Fi and plenty of adventure.

For sixteen years, Lya, has lived as a normal human, until her father, Walter, gets involved with the wrong people and puts Lya’s life at risk. During a visit to Miami, Lya’s older sister is kidnapped, and Lya and her father are subsequently taken hostage by Walter’s associates and forced to board a plane to India. When the plane lands in Delhi, Lya is rescued by three monks and taken to a Monastery. There her reality is shattered, when she learns the true identity of her rescuers and, even more surprisingly, herself. Lya is now faced with the toughest decision of her life. Can she live up to her ethereal destiny and save her family?

Thank you for your fun questions!

Monday Motif: The Vampire's Hope #FMBTours

The Vampire's Hope 1

The Vampire's Hope 2
Title: The Vampire's Hope
Author: Danica Winters
Publisher: Books to Go Now
Description: Ellie Smith, an emotionally stunted dancer, finds more than she bargains for after her human life is taken by the vampire, Master Liam. Once inside the Vampire’s underground lair, the Keres Den, she meets Ian, an immortal Viking warrior, who is infiltrating the soulless prison. (New Paragraph) As Ellie begins her training, she learns that the dark tunnels around her are filled with even darker secrets. As the truth of her existence come to light, she is faced with a choice—does she let her past dictate her future, or can she begin to feel again?

Review: This is one heck of a fast read. I read it in a matter of hours. The story jumps right into the action and doesn't stop the momentum until the story is done. Ellie is human at the beginning of the story. She's had a very tough life and finds that there is nothing worth hoping for or even an emotion worth feeling. She is completely numb to everything around her. The only thing that drives her is the need to find a job so she can eat. This need takes her to a bar where she blindly walks into her new life. Lucky for her, she really didn't feel anything as she was killed and turned into a vampire. In reality the new life suits her just fine since she kind of felt like she wasn't alive to begin with. However, as a vampire her emotions actually spark to life (instead of the other way around like most vampires). She finds herself inexplicably drawn to a man named Ian. He is her sole reason for disobeying orders, well him and her still driving need for food. He will show her what it means to feel and also to hope. Hope is the key to everything in her new life. What will happen when she learns to hope and to love? Why was she turned into a vampire? Why does Ian bring out the emotions she never felt she had? You'll have to read to see. Trust me when I say, it won't take long for you to get those answers because you will be done with the book before you know it.

Monday Motif: Interview with Fate's Design author Lola James #FMBTours

Fate's Design 1

Welcome to the Fate's Design tour with Full Moon Bites. I read this book a while ago for another tour group and wrote a review HERE. My review included an interview that is very much about the story itself, so when this tour came up, I decided to ask Lola James some questions that surround her future works (in case you are confused by my interview below). I hope you enjoy it and are intrigued enough to check out all of Lola's works (Unbound, Bound to Remember, Once Upon a Midnight Dreary [collection of short stories by several authors I love], A VILLAIN'S FATE, A Fate Series Short).

Interview with Fate's Design author Lola James:
  1. Where do you see your Fate series going?

Well without giving much away, some of Megan’s dreams come true and she begins to question those around her.

  2. You recently held a giveaway for a lucky reader to name a character in your next book. What was your motivation behind this giveaway?

Well I wanted to get my readers involved and have a fun contest while doing it. That contest was for another series, Spellbound.
  3. Has the winner decided which God/Goddess will be featured in your next story?

She is going to me a new character and she is going to have ties to my favorite character in that book, Dawn. I can’t say more without giving the story away.

  4. Will the chosen God/Goddess actually be based off of the myths or are you basing the character off of the ideas of the winner?

It’s going to be based of something else. But the next book you will see almost all of the gods and goddess show up at some point.

  5. What other books do you envision in the future? Will you run similar giveaways for those?

I will have another contest like that for the third book of the Fate series.

Monday Motif: Glistening Haven Excerpt #PromoBookTours

Glistening Haven 1

Glistening Haven 2
Title: Glistening Haven
Author:Jill Cooper
Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform
Description: Susan Monroe doesn't ask for much: good grades from her children, a house with room for a pool, to be the best Tupperware party host in New Haven 56.

But inside her tranquil 1950s styled community, a monster lurks. A monster that lives inside Susan, and every one of her superficially perfect neighbors, held in check by the oppressive police state that rules over them.

Susan happy life is torn apart when her teenage son goes missing the same night an explosion rips apart the community. Susan knows it’s only a matter of time before the police start breaking down their doors.

Before the reconditioning begins and Susan's identity is lost, she must do one final thing.

Find her son.

Excerpt:Susan clasped her hands in front of her. “Well, I know how stressful a move to a new city can be on you and especially the children. You’ll have to make sure they’re okay with the process, won’t you?”

Diane nodded, tears glistening in her eyes.

“New job? Is that why you moved here?”

Startled, Diane blinked her eyes. “Moved here? Moved here? Don’t you know? Don’t you know what this place is?”

Susan’s smile stretched like an elastic band and her heartbeat quickened. “Of course I do. It’s a great community. We have friends, families, jobs. Every weekend there’s a sock hop downtown. Our children can grow, thrive. So now you go on and tell me, why did you move here?”

Diane swallowed, glancing down. “So my children could grow up safe.”

Susan squeezed the woman’s wrist. She wore the same bracelet that Susan wore, that they all wore. “Why don’t you invite me inside and I can start to show you the ropes, okay? I’ll explain a few things to you. Trust me, there’s a lot of misinformation out there.”

“I could put on some water for tea.” Diane said and pattered inside, leaving Susan to step in and close the door behind her.

Susan adjusted her skirt and heard the sound of playing coming from the living room. Peeking her head around the corner, she saw a sofa and furnishings already in place, with cardboard boxes stacked against the wall. The two boys playing on the beige rug were four and five, or thereabouts. Cute children, Susan thought. Each had thick blond hair, with bracelets on their wrists. Around their necks, Susan saw red marks.

She gulped down a quick breath of air. How horrid the process was, just horrid.

Susan clicked down the hall and found the kitchen. Diane sat at the table beside a window that overlooked a small cramped yard. If it was big enough for a barbecue grill, Susan would have been surprised. Diane and her husband were quiet, holding each other’s hands while their eyes were somewhere else. Susan knew what it was like. She knew exactly what they were going through.

She sat beside them and outreached her hand on top of theirs. “It’ll be all right.” Susan said softly. “You’ll get through this fine. In a few weeks, you’ll begin to feel better, fit in.”

The husband glanced at Susan for the first time. His deep brown eyes held sadness she could feel. “We were living in Ohio. The kids just started school. We weren’t hurting anyone.”

Susan knew. She understood. “This is the way things are. It can be a good life if you accept it.”

“And if you don’t?” He asked quietly, angrily.

“You’ll go away,” Susan said. “And those children, those beautiful children will grow up without a father. If they grow up at all.”

He squeezed his eyes shut.

“Will the tea be ready soon?” Susan asked.

Diane nodded. “It should be in a minute.”

“Good,” Susan patted her knee with a big smile, “we’ll sit over muffins and you can tell me about the new jobs you’ve gotten. And I’ll tell you all about my big Tupperware party next week. Wouldn’t it be nice to get out and meet some of your neighbors?”

Monday Motif: Dangerous Past Excerpt #CharismaMedia

Dangerous Past 1

Dangerous Past 2
Title: Dangerous Past
Author: A.F. Ebbers
Desription: An airline captain and his wife are being stalked by professional assassins who have a deadline to kill him and make it look like an accident or suicide. The couple doesn’t know why they are being targeted. Little by little they are pulled into a dangerous web of intrigue by a murderous criminal network who offers the pilot his wife’s life if he will concede to their demands.

Dangerous Past is a story of a man who must choose between doing what ought to be done or keeping his family alive by allowing a murderous and powerful VIP to escape his past.

Book Excerpt:

It was nine at night, when the FBI agent watching Frank’s house decided to drive down the road to get a cup of coffee. He figured it would take no longer than twenty minutes.  Inside the house Nicole made some coffee and gave a cup to Frank to take outside to give to the agent.

Frank went out the front door and looked for the agent’s car. He peered into the darkness and started to cross the street when he heard a voice from the side of the yard.

     “I’m back here.”

Frank turned around and walked into the dark beside his house.

     “Over here.”

Frank thought the voice now came from the back yard and he continued toward the rear of the house. When he got to the rear yard, Frank still couldn’t see the agent. “Hey, where in the devil are you? I got some hot coffee.”

“I think I saw someone run into the foliage near the lake. You better go back inside where it’s safe while I have a look around.”

“No, I’ll help you search. Wait a minute.” Frank jogged towards the voice that seemed to be closer to the lake now.

Standing in the shadows, John smiled. For whatever reason, whether his victim was a macho know-it-all type or just naive of the danger, many of the men he had killed had swallowed that bait. He also figured from the fax sheet he had received, that the Austin police had taken Frank’s .38-calber revolver. Under the new waiting law, John knew it was impossible for Frank to get another weapon so soon unless his intended victim wasn’t a law-biding citizen. And John was counting on Frank to be a law-abiding sort.

As Frank neared Town Lake, he wished he had brought a flashlight. He couldn’t see the agent at all. So he went toward the shrubbery where he last heard the voice. “Hey, fellow, where are you?” Frank said. He felt foolish that he didn’t know the agent’s name.

     “Here, right behind you.”

The voice startled Frank and he whirled around to face a well-built man wearing all black as though he was on a Special Forces recon night team. I’m in trouble, Frank thought, as he looked down the silencer barrel of a 9mm pistol. God, this guy is really good. “Did you kill the agent that was watching me?”

“I wasn’t paid to do that. Now, Frankie boy, let’s me and you take a walk to the shoreline.”

Look for the original Three Lost Kids Trilogy--Lexie World, Bella World and Maddie World--if you like enchanted Dragons, Fairies, and more adventures through magical worlds with great life lessons for kids!

launching November 26th through Evolved Publishing

Review: The Three Lost Kids series is one that I have been thoroughly enjoying. Each story has a lesson that the three girls need to learn (typically with one of them needing the lesson more than the others). The girl who needs the lesson the most is the one whose perspective the story is being told from. You can read my reviews of Maddie World and The Three Lost Kids and the Death of the Sugar Fairy by clicking on the titles in this sentence.

This story is from Bella's perspective (she's the middle child). Christmas this year for Bella was somewhat a disappointment. First her parents decided to try to focus Christmas on being a family and not on the presents. This meant that they got their stockings in the morning and one present. The rest had to wait until after dinner and Christmas caroling that night. When they got to opening presents, the girls were super excited. Bella however ended this activity feeling like she missed out on something. She got a dress, a sweater, a jewelry box, and a sparkling rock. Nothing to play with, but she learns that the rock is supposed to grant one special Christmas wish. She wishes that everyday were Christmas and that they would get everything they ever dreamed of getting. This is where the story takes on an element of the movie "Groundhog Day". The girls must figure out what lesson they have to learn in order to return the world to the way it is supposed to be. I don't want to give too much information away, so you will have to read the book to find out how the girls feel about having Christmas everyday and what lesson they really need to learn. Ultimately the best thing I can say about this story (other than it being a great book and perfect for you kids) is be careful what you wish for.

Monday Motif: Shadow Cay Excerpt #PromoBookTours

Shadow Cay 1

Shadow Cay 2
Title: Shadow Cay
Author: Leona DeRosa Bodie
Publisher: WRB Publishing
Description: When the Nesbitts anchor in the Southern Bahamas one night in a moonlit cove, Madeleine discovers someone wants to make sure her family never makes it out of paradise alive. The double murder of her parents shatters the only security she’s ever known. Now thrust into a world of international intrigue, she vows to find answers before the killer returns for the next of kin. 'Shadow Cay' is a contemporary thriller about the bravery of those determined to fight injustice.

Excerpt: Madeleine knew the people of Highbourne Cay were excited about the maiden voyage. Caribbe allowed them to see the islands in a new way. She imagined cruising on foils that lifted the ferry’s hull completely out of the water.

Odd, even though it was dead calm, a rustle of wind swept across her shoulder, and she heard a faint sound like the brushing of humming bird wings. With her fingers secure in Rollo’s massive hand, she treaded the plank and boarded the ferry. She got only a glimpse of a man on the main deck, but it was enough. He didn’t look like an islander or a deckhand.

Tall, dressed in crew whites and as stiff as one of her toy wooden soldiers, he stood behind the open bow doors. Like oil, the man’s eyes slid from one passenger to another until he frowned in her direction. She glanced away, avoided his stare, looking down at the deck, studying his cowboy boots. The crew was supposed to wear boat shoes, not cowboy boots. Usually she had difficulty accepting rules she didn’t make; suddenly following rules was important.

For a fleeting second, she wished she were home with her parents. That’s when the pain hit her in the middle of her forehead. “Rollo, I changed my mind. Let’s go some other time with Mom and Dad.”

“What’s wrong, Maddy?” he asked gently.

“My head hurts.”

“The fresh air will do you good.” He patted her shoulder reassuringly. She didn’t respond. Her hand tightened on the railing, as she and Rollo continued climbing the stairs to the top deck.

Madeleine leaned into the railing and watched the seascape glide past makeshift docks, beyond the reach of roads into a vast area of coral reefs. Islands appeared to rise from the sound, then reappeared time and again in the form of small cays, creating a continuing landscape. Thirty minutes later she rested in a deck chair, oblivious of the time.

A sickening jolt spilled her onto the floor. She heard an awful crunch, then a loud crash. Water gushed through the doors onto the lower deck. She didn’t understand how the best ferry in the entire world could take on water. Nothing was supposed to happen to the best, but she wasn’t so sure.

Monday Motif: Three Lost Kids and the Death of the Sugar Fairy #IOTours

Three Lost Kids and the Death of the Sugar Fairy Picture 1

Three Lost Kids and the Death of the Sugar Fairy Picture 2
Title: Three Lost Kids and the Death of the Sugar Fairy
Series: Three Lost Kids Series, Book 4
Author: Kimberly Kinrade
Publisher: Evolved Publishing
Description: Halloween is here and Lexie, Bella and Maddie couldn't be happier. But why does everything feel so different? Fewer houses are decorated and fewer kids are out trick-or-treating. Still, that's not going to stop the three girls from eating as much candy as they can before their parents can stop them, even if that means fighting each other for it.

When they finally discover a haunted house worthy of their favorite holiday, they forget their parents' warnings and go in alone, only to discover that the house really is haunted, and not only that, but they've been transported to a whole different world!

A dying Sugar Fairy in one of the abandoned rooms send them on a quest to find her Sugar Baby and the magic Sugar Flower in order to save her and Halloween. If they fail, Halloween will be gone forever, and they'll never return to their family.

But with Sugar Bug attacks, the Cavity Caves where they must face their deepest fears, and giant gummy bears armed with candy cane swords, the girls aren't sure they'll make it.

Their only chance is to work together, using each of their strengths to help each other. Can they stop fighting over candy long enough? Or will they be trapped in the dying Sugar Land forever?

Review: This is a wonderful continuation of the Three Lost Kids series. Maddie is turning ten on Halloween and she and her sisters, Bella and Lexi, are going trick-or-treating. They get all dressed up only to discover that most of the houses just aren't participating. There aren't any other kids out. The homes are dark. That is they are all dark until them come across one that is completely decked out for the season. The three girls get so excited that they run to the house, abandoning their parents. They knock on the door and it opens. What to do? Well being 10, 8, and 6, they decide to go inside the "haunted house." At this point, the kids enter a new world where they are given the task to save the Sugar Fairy who is on her death bed lest Halloween will be forgotten forever. Of course they accept the mission.

This story is designed to help kids to understand a few things like working together an not to argue with your siblings so much. It teaches a little about the effects of eating too much sugar and a healthy alternative. It's a cute story and fast read.

Bad Juju 2
Title: Bad Juju
Author: Dina Rae
Publisher: Amazon
Description: Lucien Nazaire flees his Haitian homeland and meanders around the United States for decades. He settles in a Wisconsin trailer park filled with elderly tenants. He meets Jake, his teenage neighbor, and hires him for odd household jobs. As their relationship progresses, Lucien invites the boy into the world of Voodoo.

Jake LaRue lives in foster care with his abusive uncle. The Voodoo lessons give him a sense of power within an otherwise helpless situation. Although the boy is a loner, he feels an instant connection with his classmate, Henry, and introduces him to Lucien.

Henry Novak has Asperger’s Syndrome. He fixates on historical events, most recently the 2010 Haitian earthquake. Like Jake, he becomes passionate about the dark side of Voodoo. They learn how to cast spells on those they hate and lust, leading up to dire consequences.

Several months after the Haitian earthquake, Henry convinces his family to volunteer with their church in the island's reconstruction. Their mission turns into a nightmare when he mysteriously walks off of the campsite.

Bad Juju is a balance of horror, romance, and literary fiction intended for ages fifteen and up. Research about the Voodoo religion, shapeshifting, zombies, and possession and themes of redemption and loneliness emerge throughout the plot.

Monday Motif: A Practical Arrangement Guest Post #IOTours

A Practical Arrangement 1

Do You Worry You Won't Succeed As A Writer

By author, Nadja Notariani

Marcy Kennedy challenges us to ask ourselves the tough questions in her post, 'Do You Worry You Won't Succeed As A Writer?'. I'm sure we've all had those pesky moments (or days) of self doubt. Heck! It's why I participate in the Insecure Writer's Support Group. But we must not let self-doubt have the final say!

I've had a weird month, confidence wise that is. Someone I've grown to respect offered me quiet yet solid in a way I'm not sure I can describe praise. It felt great...and then the bottom dropped out from under my feet. You see...I have a tendency to over-think things. Once I heard those words of affirmation, my brain erupted into civil war. Let's meet the factions...

Under the command of the illustrious Captain Confidence, Positive Prudence claps her hands as Optimist Oola joins in, cheering the gang toward victory. Goddess Ego nods approvingly from her raised dais platform, leaving The Harridan of Hilarity to poke fun at the whole scene, ordering any and all in her path to laugh their troubles away...or else!

Evil Nemesis Enemy Mine, that hope-hating-harpy, rallies her band of miscreant masochists with a wag of her bony finger. Inner Critic is the first in line, that brown-nosing blackguard! Always attempting to appease Enemy Mine, she is. She's a sadist I tell you, staring me down with that rotten gleam in her eyes! An honest-to-hope-and-change-sadist! The minions, Not Good Enough Today and her twin brother Not Good Enough Tomorrow wheeze their missives of despair and defeat into my ears.

'Charlatan! Poser!' They cackle with glee.

Inner Critic smacks a ruler against her hand.

'Just wait until something bad happens, Nadja! Everyone will see what a fake you are!' She smiles an evil, anticipatory expression that sucks the air from my lungs.

I want to cry, but I never can. To run. To forget all this reach-for-your-dreams nonsense and hide away. To focus on something more 'do-able', more 'reasonable', more 'regular'. Maybe I could join a Bridge Club...

'Ha!' Harridan of Hilarity injects, eyebrow raised archly.

Oh! She's up to something.

'Something bad already happened, Inner Critic. You're here, aren't you?' Harridan cracks herself up, and it takes her a moment to recover.

The corner of my mouth quirks - against my better judgment.

'Nadja,' The Harridan faces me, eyebrow still peaked above her twinkling eyes. 'Did calamity come down upon your head? Is the sun still shining? Did the sky fall, my chicken little?'

My smile broadens, slightly, as I realize that no, no such awfulness has befallen me thus far.

'And what would happen if Inner Critic was right? Would the earth stop spinning then, Fraidy-Cat?'

I shake my head in the negative.

'Well...then let's get on with it. Get it out of the way, shall we?'

I'm stupefied, speechless. I don't know what she means.

'Failure,' she sings, dancing toward Captain Confidence and the gang.

Prudence and Oola go into back-up-singer-mode.

'I didn't like your writing style, and your freckles are DIS-Guuuuuus-ting.'

Her singing really does leave a lot to be desired and I reach up, sliding my hand over those hateful freckles ( I mean, really, who has a deep olive complexion and freckles), but I find my toes tapping along with the perky melody and beat.

'We'll sing the worst to a happy tune - but don't you think of ES-caaaaaap-ing.' The music reaches a fevered pitch, the notes sharp and clean. 'UN-original, UN-inspiring, UN-talented, UN-reliable, Uncommitted...'

I cut her off. 'Hey there. That's not right. I'm original. I'm inspiring. I'm talented, reliable, AND committed! And Don't. You. Forget. It!'

Oh, Wait...I'm singing. Goddess Ego conducts while contorting herself into the most unusual yoga pose. She's radiantly beaming.

Harridan, the bossy jester, sneaks up beside me. ' never really did believe all that nonsense Inner Critic was spewing. Why didn't you stand up to her the way you did to me?'

I stand, dumbfounded before my sub-conscious. 'Because she scares me,' I confess.

'You're not afraid of me,' she states calmly.

'You're different,' I reply. 'You're more like me.'

'Chickie-poo...we are you. We are only as big as you allow us to be.'

I smile, truly smile, although it takes a minute for it to spread across my face. I continue singing loudly in my vehicle - windows up of course! Round one, Nadja.

Monday Motif: The Marriage Bargain Review & Interview #PromoBookTours

The Marriage Bargain 2

The Marriage Bargain Picture 1
Title: The Marriage Bargain
Author: Sandra Edwards
Publisher: Sandra Edwards
Desription: Camille Chandler is a tabloid journalist whose career is right on track–until her boss sees a curious ad in the L.A. Trades.

Wanted: Single actress for an extended gig abroad.

France’s mega-rich playboy Julian de Laurent is up to something and Camille’s boss expects her to find out what. Who knew the eccentric gazillionaire was looking to hire a temporary wife?

When Camille refuses to accept Julian’s proposal–and secretly write a juicy tell-all about the de Laurent family–she’s fired and left financially destitute, forcing her to entertain Julian’s proposal for real. But what’ll happen at the end of the contract period, after Camille has spent six months as the wife of a man she learns is capable of stealing her heart?

Review: What would you do if you had the opportunity to marry a rich and famous person with the agreement that in six months the marriage would be dissolved AND you would become a multimillionaire? Me personally, if I had no other relationship ties, I would so do it. Camille Chandler is put in this exact situation with only one other stipulation. She answers to the wife-seeking ad in order to get a scoop for her magazine. Her dream is to write a column for some prestigious magazine. The problem came when her boss told her to accept the marriage proposal only to get the story and to back out of the arrangement the day before the wedding. Camille has way too much heart to do something so cruel just for a story. However, her boss sees that as an unforgivable flaw for a reporter. Camille quits her job as she is being fired and finds herself blacklisted. Now what should she do?

Camille finds herself agreeing to a marriage of convenience just to keep herself off the streets and to pay her bills. She doesn't expect to actually enjoy having the extra money. She doesn't expect to be attracted to Julian with a fever she doesn't know if she can deny. She also doesn't expect to be competing for his affection with the woman his father intended him to marry. What will happen over the next six months is a mystery. It's a unique story that will have you questioning what you would do to survive. It's very well written with great character development that will leave you wanting to read more of Sandra Edwards's works.

Interview with the author, Sandra Edwards:
  1. Why was Julian so against marrying Madeleine? What history did they have together?

Julian and Madeleine shared a “casual” relationship. When Julian concocted his scheme, he wasn’t interested in marrying anyone. Madeleine was just a casualty of that determination.

  2. Why did Julian's dad feel that it was ok to arrange a marriage for his sons?

Maurice is a very wealthy man who’s used to getting what he wants, and now that he’s retired from the family business he has a little too much time on his hands. Plus, he’s old school. He comes from a time when arranged marriages are the norm among the very wealthy.

  3. Camille really had nothing to lose by marrying Julian, but what gave her the courage to actually do it? How was she able to act so well under all the pressure?

Camille’s motivation is simple. She’s afraid of being homeless. How does she handle the pressure so well? Desperation. lol.

  4. What happened between Tasha and Andre? Why did Tasha leave?

While it's clear in THE MARRIAGE BARGAIN that Tasha and Andre like each other, Tasha left simply because the storyline dictated it. But, because readers have expressed an interest in them, I'm happy to report that Tasha and Andre's story will continue in THE MARRIAGE CAPER.

  5. What would have happened to Julian and Camille's arrangement if she had gotten pregnant?

That would’ve really complicated the situation, and it would’ve been very hard, if not impossible, to wrap the book up in less than 60K words and have the reader feeling satisfied that they were together at the end because they were in love and not because of the baby. 60K words maximum was important because I'd intended this book to be a quick romantic read.

  6. (Shameless plug time!) Tell us what we can expect to see from you in the future!

THE MARRIAGE CAPER will be my next release. Hopefully in time for Christmas!

Excerpt from The End, from Cursed Heroes The Beginnings

Two hours remained on the timer and all but 24 and Ten Thousand had reverted to their true age. All but the two of them were still in perfect control they had lock themselves into a deep state of mediation. They were holding the link in place, as the powers of the other members surged wildly out of control; they pushed it back under control keeping the link from breaking.

Their bodies were approaching the point where their minds would began to be effected now. One hour left and the voting would be over, the time moved even slower as every member pushed with everything they had left. They pushed and pushed pumping out every bit of energy they could, as 24 and Ten Thousand did everything they could to hold the net together. But their minds were starting to fade, they were losing control of the link with each passing second. Soon they would break down and loses it all.

The votes were coming in and peace was winning, but it didn’t look as though the alliance would last. 24 began to slip and he reached a point where he lost control, in his last moment of control his mind cried out for help. 24’s mind was gone and Ten Thousand was close behind him.

Then something happened that no one expected. The link began to get stronger and stronger. It stabilized itself, they had gotten the help they needed from the people of the galaxy. The computer system had detected 24’s failing mind and found a way to help; it urged everyone that wanted peace to focus on helping The Brothers Will. And for the first time in history, they were the ones being saved by the people they were there to protect. Five minutes left and Ten Thousand lost control of his mind and his powers. As the energy surged from his body like a super nova, it was directed by the combined will of the galaxy.

Something happened that was not expected or even thought possible. The surging power from Ten Thousand surged along the link between The Brothers Will. The Star-core’s that linked them transfer the energy to the other members. However, the energy was different from the raw power that was expected. The mind of Ten Thousand had one last thought before it faded. That thought was to protect his brothers and to heal them, he was a doctor at his core and even at the last moment, he was still trying to do just that and he did. The energy rippled through the alliance reversing the aging process and restoring the members.

The members of The Brothers Will began to gain their strength back one by one and as they did, they gave everything they had. Pushing all their power and will into the network. Ten Thousand and 24 had given everything to save not only them but the galaxy as well, but they weren’t going to let them die without a fight.

“Zero” the computer display on Techatron 24 flashed in large twenty-foot letters. “Peace has been chosen”
