Blood Awakening by Wenona Hulsey Review

Blood Awakening Picture
Title: Blood Awakening
Series: The Blood Burden Series, Book 1
Author: Wenona Hulsey
Publisher:
Desription: Evil starts the clock ticking, leaving Nicole's life changed forever....
Hidden powers, ancient grudges, romance and action that will leave you begging for more....

Review: This is a quick read that leaves a lot of unanswered questions, but there are several books in the series so just plan on having them all ready to be read in order. I would say that this story is just the beginning of one large story divided up onto really small increments. You meet two main female characters, Nicole and Kat. It appears the story is going to be mostly about Nicole. She is dealing with having lost her mom to cancer when they decide to go to Florida for the weekend. While there they meet some hot guys and Nicole runs into a very creepy guy that sets her nerves on edge. It turns out that she had a very good reason to be worried about this man. He awakens a hidden supernatural aspect of Nicole that she didn't even know existed. Now what is she to do with this new found power? Will she ever see her hot man again? It's really a very interesting tease of a story. I am looking forward to reading the next book.

Wordy Wednesday: Davey the Detective Review #IOBookTours

Davey The Detective 2
Title: Davey the Detective
Series: A Bird Brain Book
Author: Emlyn Chand
Publisher: Evolved Publishing
Description: Davey dubs himself the luckiest crow in the entire world when he finds a wonderful, shiny object. It even has a fantastic name: “paperclip.” Wow!

One dark and dreary day, Davey’s treasure goes missing, and he is beside himself with grief. Luckily, he knows just how he can find out which of the forest animals is to blame for the theft. Inspired by the torn pages of a Sherlock Holmes story that were used to fashion his nest, Davey calls on the help of Sarah the sparrow to investigate the mystery and, hopefully, retrieve his prize.

Together the two birds begin to collect clues. Their trail leads them straight to Mr. Bushtail, a greedy squirrel who keeps a giant store of objects in a hollowed-out tree trunk. When Mr. Bushtail refuses to cooperate, the two birds have no choice but to break into his tree house in search of the truth.

Justice will prevail and treasure will be found in this intriguing tale of mystery.

Review: Bird Brain books all tell a story from a bird's perspective in order to teach some lessons. In this story, Davey finds a paperclip and hides it in his nest right before bed. This is a characteristic of certain birds where they hoard shiny objects. When Davey wakes up, he digs through his nest for his treasure only to find it missing. Instead of calmly looking for it he decides that his treasure must have been stolen. He uses this as an opportunity to become a detective, something he has always dreamed of doing. He acquires a sidekick and goes in search of his lost paperclip. During his adventure, they accuse a completely innocent deer of being a thief without any real evidence. They also assume a squirrel is guilty and sneak into his home at night, destroying his stacks of nuts and scaring him in his sleep. The result of these assumptions is that Davey's sidekick finds his paperclip in Davey's nest right where he left it. You may be wondering what lesson a kid might learn from this story. I see a couple of lessons here. When you assume you make...Oh you probably know the rest of that one. Never trespass. Never accuse someone of something you aren't certain they did. The end of the story tells us that Davey learns the value of a real friend as well. Of course if you haven't read a Bird Brain book before, you really need to check out the art. The illustrations are always cute and sometimes humorous as well.

Fool Moon by Cait Lavender - Author of Cowboy Moon

She shuts down all of his advances and insists they are just friends. Dorian takes matters into his own hands and tricks Gwen into a romantic weekend away from her ex-boyfriend at a haunted bed and breakfast.

Review:
Sweet Little Lies - If you have read any of Liz Schulte's books, you have encountered the Sehkmet Femi. She is a bounty hunter who focuses on missing person cases, but has a soft spot for helping her friends. This probably is because she really doesn't have a lot of friends. You won't learn a lot about her in most of the books, but this sort story will give you a great look at who she really is and why she acts the way she does. This story is about one missing person case she decides to take on against her better judgement. She is working for a rather handsome vampire. In Liz's world, vampires don't feed on people by buying them. They off of their life force simply by touching them. Buying them serves simply to deliver a toxin that makes their food more pliable. Femi learns a very valuable lesson about how vampires really operate and why the world doesn't trust them. It's a great short story that makes me hope that maybe Liz has plans to write a book or two about Femi later on.

Autumn's Call - This sort story has all the elements necessary to make a much longer story. What I mean by that is that it has a confusing beginning that makes me think I need more information. It a romance that I want to know more about. It describes how death occurs in a way that makes you think there's more to it. Finally it ends leaving you wanting more. I don't know if this sort is a part of any of Lisa Rayns other books, but I think I need to find out so I can read more.

Tell a Soul - I love all of Olivia's books and this is a wonderful addition to her Bend-Bite-Shift series. If you have read those books, you know who Langston is. If not, he is a giant of a man who is also a gentle witch. This short story finally explains who he really is and brings him together with the love of his life.v it also introduces a new type of supernatural person that I feel leaves room for Olivia to expand her books more. What I mean by that is that she could write a whole book about Kristana and I would gladly read it.

The Siren Sarina - I know that Sarina is a character in some of C.G. Powell's other works, but I honestly do not remember a lot about her. This short story is meant to give us a little background information on the siren as well as tease your adult fantasies as well. I thoroughly enjoyed all the Greek mythology that is presented as Sarina tells Zeus about her dealings with Ares and Aphrodite. Powell works a lot of little details into this story showing her extensive knowledge of the myths. I enjoyed learning about Sarina, but was left wondering if she will ever get her own book. I definitely would read it if she did.

Fool Moon - I read Hunter Moon by Cait Lavender a long time ago, but I remember loving it. I was very excited about getting a chance to read more of her work. I was not disappointed at all. This short story is about a military man who has returned from Iraq to find the woman he secretly loved to be with another man. His best friend also found his wife with another man. That detail is important because his friend is the one that dragged him into the strip club where he meets the woman of his dreams. He just didn't dream that she would be a werewolf. I loved how their very short courting takes place and the end result. I just wish it were a full length book.

When Opportunity Haunts - I have read all of the Gwen Sparks books so far. If you have read them, you know about Dorian Hade. This sort story is told from his perspective. He is an angel of death and helping Gwen to understand her spirit walker powers. He also happens to be drop dead gorgeous, caring, and completely infatuated with Gwen. In this sort story, he is trying to distract Gwen from her heartache from her ex-boyfriend Aiden. He is also trying to teach her a little more about her peers while trying to woo her. He's not entirely successful or unsuccessful, but it will give you a clue as to the tension between the two of them that can be found in the main series.

Friday (Non)Fiction: The Darkening Dream First Chapter #IOBookTours

The Darkening Dream 1

The Darkening Dream 2

The Darkening Dream by Andy Gavin

The Darkening Dream is the chilling new dark fantasy novel by Andy Gavin, creator of Crash Bandicoot and Jak & Daxter.

Even as the modern world pushes the supernatural aside in favor of science and steel, the old ways remain. God, demon, monster, and sorcerer alike plot to regain what was theirs.

1913, Salem, Massachusetts - Sarah Engelmann's life is full of friends, books, and avoiding the pressure to choose a husband, until an ominous vision and the haunting call of an otherworldly trumpet shake her. When she stumbles across a gruesome corpse, she fears that her vision was more of a premonition. And when she sees the murdered boy moving through the crowd at an amusement park, Sarah is thrust into a dark battle she does not understand.

With the help of Alex, a Greek immigrant who knows a startling amount about the undead, Sarah sets out to uncover the truth. Their quest takes them to the factory mills of Salem, on a midnight boat ride to spy on an eerie coastal lair, and back, unexpectedly, to their own homes. What can Alex's elderly, vampire-hunting grandfather and Sarah's own rabbi father tell them? And what do Sarah's continuing visions reveal?

No less than Gabriel's Trumpet, the tool that will announce the End of Days, is at stake, and the forces that have banded to recover it include a 900 year-old vampire, a trio of disgruntled Egyptian gods, and a demon-loving Puritan minister. At the center of this swirling cast is Sarah, who must fight a millennia-old battle against unspeakable forces, knowing the ultimate prize might be herself.

First Chapter:
One: Agitation

Salem, Massachusetts, Saturday afternoon, October 18, 1913

AS SERVICES DREW TO AN END, Sarah peered around the curtain separating the men from the women. Mama shot her a look, but she had to be sure she could reach the door without Papa seeing her. After what he’d done, she just couldn’t face him right now. There he was, head bobbing in the sea of skullcaps and beards. She’d be long gone before he extracted himself.

“Mama,” she whispered, “can you handle supper if I go to Anne’s?” Last night’s dinner debacle had probably been Mama’s idea, but they’d never seen eye to eye on the subject. Papa, on the other hand, was supposed to be on her side.

Mama’s shoulders stiffened, but she nodded.

The end of the afternoon service signaled Sarah’s chance. She squeezed her mother’s hand, gathered her heavy skirts, and fled.

***

The journey through Salem’s bustling downtown took only ten minutes, but the Indian summer sun left her corset sticky and cruel. A final two blocks brought Sarah to her friend’s pre-Revolutionary house, a kernel of which dated to the seventeenth century. Wings, rooms, and gables had sprouted during the past two hundred years, and in its present form the house and stables were large enough for five family members, seven boarders, a decent collection of horses, and a dog.

Sarah entered without knocking. Mr. Barnyard, the Williamses’ obese basset hound, rushed to greet her. After suffering his affections, she found Anne in the sitting room helping her mother with the mending. Several inches taller than Sarah, she wore her straw-colored hair in two looped braids, and possessed all the womanly curves Sarah found lacking in herself.

“What a nice surprise,” Mrs. Williams said. “Sarah, I know you’re not much for the needle, but some conversation would help pass the time.”

Behind her mother, Anne stabbed herself in the chest with an imaginary dagger.

“I hate to disappoint you,” Sarah said, “but I hoped to steal away your oldest daughter. Where’s Emily? Can’t she help?”

Mrs. Williams shrugged a padded shoulder. “Out back somewhere. If I hadn’t whelped that one myself, I’d swear she’s some sort of changeling. But take Anne, she’s all thumbs today.”

Anne set down the trousers she was sewing and tugged Sarah out the door.

“Thank God,” she said, leading Sarah upstairs to the bedroom she shared with her younger sister. “It was so stuffy in there I thought my stitches might melt.” She cracked the window, sat on the bed, and patted the quilt next to her. “What’s brought you here on a Saturday? Shouldn’t you be helping your own mother?”

Sarah pulled the door closed and sat next to her friend.

“I had to talk to someone. Your brother isn’t going to barge in?”

“Sam’s earning extra money at the cotton mill. Tell me.”

“My parents ambushed me at Shabbat dinner last night.”

“That sounds exciting,” Anne said. “Attacked you with candles and loaves of bread?”

“Papa brought a man home with him unannounced. Not one of his usual cronies, a gentleman. In his twenties. His name was Chaim Hoffmann.”

Anne squealed. “That’s a mouthful. Was the fellow handsome?”

“I don’t remember.”

“Extra, extra! Sarah Engelmann forgot something!”

Sarah had to smile at that. She replayed last night’s dinner in her head, trying not to grimace as the awkwardness returned with the imagery.

In her mind’s eye, her parents and Mr. Hoffmann hung before her as vividly as if they sat in the room. His skin showed little evidence of exposure to the sun, his bearded face was thin, and his spectacles were twice as thick as her own.

Sarah blinked and the memory vanished. “Not handsome, not ugly.”

“Then his manner was bothersome?”

She shook her head. “Gentlemanly enough. Clearly he was very bright. A student of Papa’s friend.”

“So what’s the problem? Your mother married at eighteen. With your birthday coming up on us, your father’s probably barely reining her in.”

“I have to finish school,” Sarah said. “And at least begin college. What’s the point of having studied my whole life if all I do is settle down and start a family?”

“But it’s exciting just the same. At least you have prospects.”

“What are you talking about?” Sarah said. “Half the boys in school would cut off an arm to court you.”

Anne sighed. “Even the thought of choosing is stressful. If it were all arranged it’d be easy. You’re lucky.”

Lucky? Sarah couldn’t imagine one of Papa’s friends’ sons allowing her the freedom he did. Or the respect. They’d only want their table set and six brilliant sons to make them proud.

“I know what we should do!” Anne said. “With this heat and with your, um, stresses, we need a break. My lummox of a twin traded for a new filly this week. Why don’t the three of us go riding tomorrow, take a picnic, make a proper outing of it?”

Anne was right. School had started only a month ago, and Sarah’s life was already dominated by study.

“What time?” she said.

***

The girls drifted downstairs to find Mrs. Williams and Emily entertaining a boy in the parlor. So close to becoming a man, he looked to grow four inches if you glanced away.

Emily’s pink dress was disheveled but she appeared luminous just the same. Sarah worried about what was going to happen when she came into her own. Anne could be bold and outspoken, but she had a fundamental prudence entirely absent in her little sister.

The new boy rose to greet them. He was about the same age Sarah’s brother would’ve been and almost as handsome.

“Charles Danforth.” He extended his hand. His hair was much straighter than Judah’s.

“Nice to meet you,” Anne said, shaking hands. “You’re a friend of Emily’s?”

Emily looked like she wanted to take a bite out of someone.

“We both study Bible with Pastor Parris,” the boy said.

“Charles is just leaving,” Emily said. “He stopped by to bring us some of his mother’s preserves.”

Charles offered Sarah his hand, and she took it. The late afternoon sun streamed in through the windows and threw their shadows against the wallpaper. A sound rose in her ears, slow and mournful like that of the shofar, the ceremonial ram’s horn blown to announce the New Year.

Sarah felt queer. Her mouth dry. Before her eyes the silhouettes on the wall contorted, human limbs and torsos shifting to form the shape of a leafless tree. The reddish hue of the sun — surely that’s what it was — made the tree look as if it was drenched in blood. The horn continued to sound in her ears, loud but seemingly blown at great distance.

She released Charles’ grip and the bloody tree vanished, in its place only the shadows of two young people who’d just shaken hands.

Thursday Climax: High Above Review & Interview #FMBTours

High Above 1

High Above 2
Title: High Above
Series: Out of the Ash, Book 1
Author: Mari Freeman
Publisher: Decadence
Desription: Dragons annihilated civilization some ten generations ago. A few Crossbreeds, humans born with dragon-like characteristics, now lead opposing tribes who still battle for dwindling resources.

Rhone’s wings have been stripped from his body, his family killed, and his hopes of leading the Mountain people away from the constant threat of marauders destroyed.

Ketta’s life has been full of pain and anguish. Her brother rules her and the Lax tribe with a bloody fist. Tired of the violence, Ketta takes a stand and rescues Rhone from the brink of execution.

Armed with knowledge from Ketta’s somewhat addled grandfather, the unlikely pair embarks on a quest to heal Rhone’s wings. Along the way, the couple struggles to find the truth beneath hatred and lies. Desire and a mutual enemy bring them together; mistrust and secrets tear them apart. These lifelong foes will have to fly high above their differences to defeat a deadly dragon and save what’s left of both their tribes.

Review: For how much I love dragons, I actually haven't read a lot of books about them. I did read a series about dragon shifters that was mostly enjoyable and that helped peak my interest in this story. I actually had been under the idea that the characters in this book were shifters, but I was wrong. High Above is about a race of mutated humans that have characteristics of dragons. Not everyone has all the same characteristics, except that they have wings from my understanding. Their wings might not actually be able to support their weight for flight. How did humans become mutated with dragon features? Well they aren't completely certain. It started happening generations after dragons destroyed the Earth as we know it. The different types of dragons completely obliterated our world with handfuls of humans surviving in hiding. Over time, these mutations showed up at the birth of new generations. It is suspected to come from the ash covering the planet from the dragon's fiery destruction.

This story focuses on two warring tribes of all-humans and crossbreeds in the California area. One tribe has been ruled to believe that the other tribe is a bunch of murdering savages in the mountains. That tribe simply kills to survive and also steals the limited fuel supply the Lax tribe. The leader from the mountain tribe, Rhone, is captured by Nyx, the leader of the Lax tribe where he he is tortured and loses his wings. Ketta, Nyx's sister, feels pity for Rhone and believes he is the one that will end everyone's suffering. The odd part is that Ketta is the only female crossbreed anyone knows exists. Rhone is instantly attracted to her. Will Ketta and Rhone become an item? Will Rhone unite the tribes and save them from destroying each other? Will Rhone succeed in waking the sleeping Dragon that supposedly will help Rhone grow back his wings? It's an amazing book that you will have to read to find these answers and more!

Moonshadows 11

Moonshadows Picture 2
Moonshadows (Book Series) by Claude Dancourt

When Mira was turned into a werecat, she panicked. She ran away from her life and her boyfriend without a goodbye.

One year later, she’s on the verge of emotional and physical collapse, and answers are nowhere to be found. When the man she left behind shows up unexpectedly, Mira is so desperate to feel human again that she welcomes him back into her life despite her best resolves.

Erik has some questions of his own, and he won’t take no for an answer. He doesn’t believe in Supernatural, or in ancestral creatures. He wants a real explanation for her abandon. But when the new moon reveals the black panther inside Mira, he has no choice but to face the truth.

While the pair struggle to work out their issues, a killer lurks in the shadows. And its restraint is thinning…

Moonshadows

About the Author, Claude Dancourt:
When I was a kid, I wanted to be a writer. Then I switched to Egyptologist. And then veterinarian. This one stuck for a while. After several long (and sometimes loud) discussions with my parents, I decided being an engineer was not that bad. And then one day I woke up, and I realized that I still loved words as much as maths and physics. So I found my ink pen at the bottom of a drawer, I bought a couple of lined paper notebooks, and I started writing again.

I was lucky enough to interest a publisher into my first complete novel "Second Chances" in July 2011, and suddenly, that was it, I was a published writer. Ever since, I am struggling between applied science by day, words and restless muses by night, training sessions at the gym and trips to the my favourite bookstore. I also try not to kill my plants.

As for the chocolate orgy last weekend, I swear, the cat made me do it.

Elsa Mini Tour Starts Today! #PromoBookTours

Elsa

Elsa by Simon Gandossi

Elsa Baum dreams of moving away from Germany, a country she had watched everyday being dragged deeper into war by Adolf Hitler. Everyone had fallen under his spell, listening and believing in everything he told them.

Elsa and her close friends were the exception; they despised the Nazi’s and would soon learn the extent of their hatred towards others they considered a threat to their ideology of the perfect superior race. After a chance meeting with the daughter of a high ranking Nazi, feelings were kindled and she found herself a part of the minority the Nazis were trying to eradicate.

“I don’t want my story to inspire people nor make them sad; I want it to educate them because hate, homophobia and racism still exist today, and although the chance of another event like the Holocaust is rare; the world will never be rid of the foundations that cause hatred among us” —Elsa Baum

A compelling tale filled with drama, Elsa paints a stark portrait of a dark time in history when hatred claimed the lives of many innocent people, whose only sin was to be born a Jew. It also brings to light the prejudices that continue to exist today and how violence can suddenly rear its ugly head despite seemingly peaceful times.

About the Author, Simon Gandossi
Simon Gandossi was born on the 24th February 1979 in Perth, Western Australia; his passion for writing began during primary school. He wrote short poems and eventually at the start of High School started writing short stories every month. He comes from a very hard working family, his Grandparents immigrated from Italy during the early 1950’s and worked in extremely harsh conditions in order to provide a better life for their family. Simon’s family heritage and his interest in history contribute too many inspirations for his writing. Simon hopes Elsa will be the first of many and hopes the reader enjoys reading his work as much as enjoys writing them.

Forbidden Life 1

Forbidden Life 2

Forbidden Life (Forbidden Series) by Kimberly Kinrade

The road to redemption starts in hell.

The older Rent-A-Kids are free, but a powerful force still pulses in the darkness, keeping them all prisoners to their power.

With Drake gone and her power spiraling out of control, Sam doesn’t know how she’ll make it through the birth of her child–or how she’ll protect that child from the evil that stalks her.

Drake will do anything to get his powers back… but when his choices lead to drugs and secrets, he has to decide what he’s willing to lose forever.

Lucy’s shadow powers are growing stronger–too strong. As she and Luke work with the mysterious I.P.I. agents to free the babies and young children still held captive at Rent-A-Kid, Lucy must make some difficult decisions that could jeopardize her friendships, and their mission.

In this final installment of the award-winning Forbidden trilogy, each character must conquer their darkest demons or lose everything in this final battle against the evil Rent-A-Kid organization.

I was born with ink in my veins and magic in my heart. As a child, where others saw shapes in clouds, I saw words. But I was also an entrepreneur at heart. So when my business arrangement with the Tooth Fairy ended, I went pro by writing my fantastical stories and selling them to all my neighbors.

Fast forward…um…many years and many college degrees later…and I am now a published author and reformed journalist.

Though I have written in many genres and fields, I am most passionate about the world of the paranormal and fantasy.
