Friday (Non)Fiction: Poppy The Proud Review #IOBookTours

Poppy the Proud 2
Title: Poppy The Proud
Series: A Bird Brain Book Author: Emlyn Chand
Publisher: Evolved Publishing
Description: Poppy is the prettiest peacock in the entire garden, but one day his privileged existence is upset when an all-white peacock is born and promptly named the most beautiful by a smitten flock. Intensely jealous, Poppy no longer knows where he fits in and decides to reclaim his title as the fairest bird in all the land, no matter what it takes.

In a desperate attempt to regain the admiration of his peers, Poppy steals items from the humans that visit his park. He wraps himself in a beautiful silk scarf, wears a series of ornate bangles around his neck, and even tries to dye his feathers with colored dust from a festive Holi celebration. Unfortunately, each of these attempts not only fails to improve his appearance, they actually make it worse. What’s a poor bird to do?

In this compelling tale of self-esteem, pride, and learning what makes each of us special, Poppy the peacock discovers that true beauty lies beneath the feathers.

Review: Poppy the Proud is another bird book by Emlyn Chand that is designed to help teach children some lesson in a fun way. This particular story is about being too prideful. Poppy is a peacock. We mostly associate such words as regal, proud, elegant, and beautiful to peacocks because of their unique feathers, bright colors, and strut. Emlyn has used the image of a peacock to portray what happens when you are too proud and "expect" certain things to happen. Poppy was always adored and other animals in his park fawned all over him to give him whatever he desired. This had been the way things were his entire life until a solid white peacock showed up one day. In one day, all the other animals seemed to forget that Poppy existed. Well you can guess that Poppy was not happy about this. He decided that he needed to change his appearance in order to gain their attention once again. He tries a couple of changes that all result in him being a laughing stock, damaging his pride even more than being ignored. The result? Well Snow, the white peacock, eventually shows him that beauty is something that is really on the inside. He was beautiful on the outside before, but Poppy really needed to learn how to be beautiful on the inside. In other words, he needed to be less proud. Poppy learns his lesson and also makes a new friend. It's a very cute book. I love the art that appears in these books very much. I think kids of a wide variety of ages will find the story entertaining and perhaps learn the lesson as well.

Wordy Wednesday: Shifting Pride Review #CharismaMedia

Shifting Pride 1

Shifting Pride 2
Title: Shifting Pride
Series:
Author: Laura Diamond
Publisher: Etopia Press
Description: Curiosity brings out the Kitty...

Sixteen-year-old Nickie Leone has proof her father is still alive. His watch arrives in the mail, with a note telling her to “keep it hidden,” and her curiosity is piqued. She obeys the request, even keeping it hidden from her mother. But when an email from her father disappears before her very eyes, she begins to question her own sanity.

And things get even more complicated when she meets Xavian Katz, the blue-eyed, blonde hottie whose contagious smile and ridiculous sense of humor make her want to tell him all her secrets. But there’s a current beneath his charm that she can’t quite read. He’s hiding something.

When Nickie grows pointed ears and whiskers…and then a tail!...Xavian (who always seems to knows the right time to be around) seems unsurprised. He’s a shapeshifter too, a coincidence that Nickie can’t deny or ignore. She needs his help to master her new abilities, because her father’s rival, Derek, wants her to join his tribe. The last thing she wants is to be under his rule, but Derek’s got something to do with her dad’s disappearance—she knows it. And maybe letting herself be captured is the best way to find out…

Review: This book was a pleasant change of pace for me. I love cats and so far have loved any werecat shifter book I have picked up. This particular story took me about eight hours to read. In the beginning you may be a little confused, but the main character Nickie is very confused. You get pieces of the puzzle fast enough to realize that Nickie is not ordinary and perhaps the people she surrounds herself with are not normal either. Her dad is missing, a new boy moves to the neighborhood whom is driving her crazy mentally and physically, her mom seems to willing to accept that her dad is probably dead, and to top it off, she's getting weird notes in different hand writings tell her conflicting things while always trying to convince her that she might be a werecat. How odd is that?

Well I absolutely loved the story. There were several twists that kept me wondering what would happen next. The biggest surprise came at the end. It's not a cliffhanger so don't think that is the surprise, but I was left with one big question that I hope means there will be a second book. I can tell you that there is a prequel to Shifting Pride called New Pride. As soon as I find time to read it, I plan to.

My family has had our share of Christmases where we didn't have a lot of money. In order to make the season brighter and more magical, we have created a few traditions that we hold dear. One of them is having homemade ornaments on our trees. Our Christmas trees are covered from top to bottom with mostly handmade items that range from twisted pipe cleaners that look like candy canes to extremely elaborate cross stitched pieces. To round out our homemade feel, every year we string popcorn and cranberries by hand to wrap around the tree.

The image above is one way to string popcorn and cranberry garlands. I have learned from searching through the internet that the way that my family does it is rather unique. I think most people prefer not to have a very cluttered Christmas tree, where we pack as much on it as possible. It's like a time capsule for however many years our ornaments have survived. It turns out that a lot of people create fancy patterns by spreading out the popcorn with cranberries, but we string them separately.

We use thin and extra long doll needles and quilting thread. I am normally the one threading the needles because my eyesight is better than everyone else. I use a double string method where I stretch the thread to my arm span, put the needle on the thread, and stretch the thread to my arm span a second time. Then I cut the thread and tie the two ends to large buttons. This allows the needle not move on the thread and keeps the knot in the thread from ruining the popcorn or cranberries. The buttons keep the popcorn and cranberries on the actual thread.

We always start with stringing the cranberries. They are easier to string and they are heavier. We string our cranberries all on one string (meaning no popcorn on the string), which I suppose makes it cost a little more. It takes a lot of bags of cranberries to cover the whole tree and that varies by how close you wrap it around the tree and how big the tree is.

A note about the popcorn, the popcorn cannot be fresh and you really can't use the kind that is popped in the microwave. Microwave popcorn tends to have butter on it which makes it slick and hard to stab a needle through. You *will* stab yourself a few times with the needle if you use fresh popcorn or buttered popcorn. It will fall apart in your fingers if it is fresh. That said, depending on where you live, the time it takes for your popcorn to get just stale enough to string and not so stale that a needle won't go through it will vary by temperatures and humidity. We normally pop ours the night before and leave it in the garage in a paper bag over night. The next night, all the women in the family get together for wine, crackers, Christmas music, and stringing.

It the end, we have our tree with strings of lights, cranberries, popcorn, and an aluminum foil chain (in that order). After that, we put the ornaments on the tree. Below is last year's Christmas tree. It's not a close up, but you can see our garlands on it.

Monday Motif: Glistening Haven Excerpt #PromoBookTours

Glistening Haven 1

Glistening Haven 2
Title: Glistening Haven
Series:
Author:Jill Cooper
Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform
Description: Susan Monroe doesn't ask for much: good grades from her children, a house with room for a pool, to be the best Tupperware party host in New Haven 56.

But inside her tranquil 1950s styled community, a monster lurks. A monster that lives inside Susan, and every one of her superficially perfect neighbors, held in check by the oppressive police state that rules over them.

Susan happy life is torn apart when her teenage son goes missing the same night an explosion rips apart the community. Susan knows it’s only a matter of time before the police start breaking down their doors.

Before the reconditioning begins and Susan's identity is lost, she must do one final thing.

Find her son.

Excerpt:Susan clasped her hands in front of her. “Well, I know how stressful a move to a new city can be on you and especially the children. You’ll have to make sure they’re okay with the process, won’t you?”

Diane nodded, tears glistening in her eyes.

“New job? Is that why you moved here?”

Startled, Diane blinked her eyes. “Moved here? Moved here? Don’t you know? Don’t you know what this place is?”

Susan’s smile stretched like an elastic band and her heartbeat quickened. “Of course I do. It’s a great community. We have friends, families, jobs. Every weekend there’s a sock hop downtown. Our children can grow, thrive. So now you go on and tell me, why did you move here?”

Diane swallowed, glancing down. “So my children could grow up safe.”

Susan squeezed the woman’s wrist. She wore the same bracelet that Susan wore, that they all wore. “Why don’t you invite me inside and I can start to show you the ropes, okay? I’ll explain a few things to you. Trust me, there’s a lot of misinformation out there.”

“I could put on some water for tea.” Diane said and pattered inside, leaving Susan to step in and close the door behind her.

Susan adjusted her skirt and heard the sound of playing coming from the living room. Peeking her head around the corner, she saw a sofa and furnishings already in place, with cardboard boxes stacked against the wall. The two boys playing on the beige rug were four and five, or thereabouts. Cute children, Susan thought. Each had thick blond hair, with bracelets on their wrists. Around their necks, Susan saw red marks.

She gulped down a quick breath of air. How horrid the process was, just horrid.

Susan clicked down the hall and found the kitchen. Diane sat at the table beside a window that overlooked a small cramped yard. If it was big enough for a barbecue grill, Susan would have been surprised. Diane and her husband were quiet, holding each other’s hands while their eyes were somewhere else. Susan knew what it was like. She knew exactly what they were going through.

She sat beside them and outreached her hand on top of theirs. “It’ll be all right.” Susan said softly. “You’ll get through this fine. In a few weeks, you’ll begin to feel better, fit in.”

The husband glanced at Susan for the first time. His deep brown eyes held sadness she could feel. “We were living in Ohio. The kids just started school. We weren’t hurting anyone.”

Susan knew. She understood. “This is the way things are. It can be a good life if you accept it.”

“And if you don’t?” He asked quietly, angrily.

“You’ll go away,” Susan said. “And those children, those beautiful children will grow up without a father. If they grow up at all.”

He squeezed his eyes shut.

“Will the tea be ready soon?” Susan asked.

Diane nodded. “It should be in a minute.”

“Good,” Susan patted her knee with a big smile, “we’ll sit over muffins and you can tell me about the new jobs you’ve gotten. And I’ll tell you all about my big Tupperware party next week. Wouldn’t it be nice to get out and meet some of your neighbors?”
