Kivelli & Money Giveaway

Identity Discovery has never used anything by Kivelli and cannot vouch for the uality of their products. Identity Discovery is not responsible for the selection of the winner nor the distribution of the product.

S.O.S. Mom and Real Momma are bringing you a fantastic grand prize! Two amazing gifts that will be awarded to one lucky reader! The first prize, sponsored by Kivelli Baby, is a Luxe Nap Mat of a retail value of $104.99. And the second great prize to finish it off is $50 in Paypal money, sponsored by The Bunny's Reviews

For those of you who aren't familiar with Kivelli, here's a bit of background info on them. This online company is purely unique, classy and has the most original and beautiful children items out there! Sam Brown, the person who is behind the greatly successful Kivelli store, started designing and making baby products as a passion and hobby for his firstborn. He never even thought of turning this hobby into a business. But as things turned out, friends, neighbors, and their friends just kept asking to make them jewelry designs as gifts for their friends. A shortwhile later, a handful of local stores started to request them based on word of mouth. They started with jewelry just a few years ago as a hobby, and recently, in March of 2012, launched a full line of blankets, bathrobes, and stroller liners, among other products. The company was created to produce blankets and accessories which are different from that of other blanket and accessories products currently in the baby market. They keep their strong ideal of producing products and designs that could not be found elsewhere, as well as different designs, colors, and innovative new products for "Mom" which are pretty, practical, and play-friendly. Their products are as resilient as the kids who use them, satisfying mom's need for fashion appeal without compromising the quality of the products for their munchkins.

The Mia Damask Collection represents the elegant side of Kivelli. It truly is stunning! Countless hours of design work were put into it and it took about a year in development. It is a classic vintage design mixed with vibrant, bold and beautiful colors. These blankets were designed with fuchsia plums and pink colors so they can match pretty much all strollers. Each product has its own story and background.

Mia Damask Nap Mats feature an elegant damask pattern and the signature Kivelli ultra plush and cozy feel. The Mia Damask Luxe Nap Mat features a black canvas backing, removable pillow and nap mat inserts for machine washing. It folds up for easy storage and travel and measures 28" x 43". It is made from a blend of cotton and polyester and is machine washable.

Please take a few minutes to visit Kivelli Baby on their website, Facebook page or Twitter page and view their fabulous collection!

The Tale of Lucia Grandi 2
The Tale of Lucia Grandi

When an old woman is asked to tell the story of her life, she tells an intense and poignant tale about growing up in and surviving a warring suburban family during the 1950s and '60s.

Written as a memoir, each chapter describes a particular incident in Lucia's life which shows the constant struggle between her parents and the perverse effect it has on her and her family. From her complicated and unwanted birth, to her witnessing a suicide at age 3, to her stint as a runaway at age 14, the story progresses to the final crisis where as a young woman she is turned out of her house and banished from her family forever.

Told in breathtakingly beautiful prose, this is a powerful and timeless story of a dying woman's courageous attempt to come to terms with her past and the troubled family that dominated it.

About Susan Speranza

Susan Speranza

...I was born in New York City and grew up on Long Island where I had an interesting and creative childhood. Once in college, I studied Psychology and Philosophy, but since "thinking" didn't translate into earning money or job security, I worked at a variety of different and unrelated jobs both in New York City and on Long Island.

In order to keep me sane through all the craziness of life, I spent my spare time writing. Anything and everything. The culmination of this was a fantasy - The City of Light - which has recently been reissued as an ebook.

I took up the hobby of dog showing and breeding and produced many Pekingese Champions. You can see them over at our Castlerigg Pekingese website.

Somewhere in the middle of my life so far, after a great personal upheaval, I went back to school, became a High School Librarian. I managed to fulfill my childhood dream of living in the country when I finally escaped suburbia and moved to Vermont where I now happily live with my beautiful Pekes.

But I've never stopped writing.

My biography (as with my life, I hope) is to be continued...

Monday Motif: Veiled Mist Review & Interview #IOBookTours

Veiled Mist 1

Veiled Mist 2
Title: Veiled Mist
Author: Eleanor T Beaty
Description: On the Caribbean island of Maurray, spoiled-rotten, fifteen-year-old Hanna wakes up to a nightmare. She is not the daughter of an aristocrat but the orphan of a Gypsy. She is the descendant to a mystical Gypsy tribe. Their magic is strong and has lasted six hundred years. Ornella, the tribe's guardian, arrives at the island with her mutt, Count Dracula, to guide Hanna. Hanna is told she must embrace her heritage or die at the ripe age of seventeen. But Hanna does the unthinkable, she chooses death. She hates Gypsies and would rather die. What she doesn't know is that her death will destroy the entire tribe. What she also doesn't know is how persuasive Ornella can be. The nightmare begins.

Review: This is a very different book from the long list of books I have read. I have never read any stories about gypsies, but the paranormal and magical element of this caught my attention. I am glad that I read it too! Hannah is a spoiled rich brat living on the island of Maurray. She comes from a weird family situation. She was told her mother died upon her birth, which resulted in her being given to her father to be raised. Her family has married another woman and they have a son named John. Since they are rich, there is also a maid/cook by the name of Vani in the house. Her grandparents (father's parents) are both very much involved in the family and also live on the island. What is so weird about the family is that her parents seem to be like good friends and never appear to be in love. Actually they seem miserable with each other as far as love is concerned, but for some reason will not even consider a divorce. Both are pretty much absent from their children's lives leaving the real raising to be done by the grandparents.

In raising Hannah, her grandmother Elizabeth has put so many stories in her head about how terrible gypsies are that you have to wonder where this prejudice comes from. Her grandfather has never contradicted the stories other than to say that Elizabeth is going a little overboard. All of this is about to come back to haunt everyone though. A week before Hannah's 16th birthday she starts having weird dreams about being a gypsy and even finds herself dressed/smelling like one at random intervals of the day. To top it off, her mother's doll, which she has loved and cared for her entire life, has been broken. The doll becomes priority number one as she prepares for the day. Luckily for her a new antique doll store literally was constructed and opened over night. This is where Hannah's life will change forever. She meets Ornella, a "good" gypsy who's only goal in life is to find gypsy descendants and help them through their changes to become a member of the tribe. She really has a lot of work for her to change a spoiled brat into a caring and selfless person. She also has to undo 16 years of prejudice while breaking a spell put on her by an evil warlock set to destroy the tribe. What will become of Hannah? Will Ornella succeed in showing her that not all gypsies are smelly, dirty, evil, children stealers? Will Ornella succeed before the evil spell on Hannah literally kills her on her 16th birthday? And what will happen to the doll? You'll have to read to find out more.

Interview with the Author:
  1. Where did you get your inspiration to write about gypsies?

I’ve always had a certain fascination with the gypsies. I love mystery and the mystical along with the spiritual, and gypsies have all three of these elements in their culture and history. Their nomadic ways have lasted for centuries. We don’t know where they came from, nor where they will go. Their belief in magic and their fortune-telling combined with their obsessions of amulets and gold just turns them into fascinating people. And they can be scary too. I’ve had a gypsy walk up to my aunt inside a hospital elevator, grab her hand and tell her something that would happen a few days later. My aunt was going through a tough time and the gypsy gave her hope. Most don’t do that without asking for money but some, like this one, do. And when they do, believe in them because they were sent by a higher power. I wanted to create a character to represent that gypsy we crossed paths with.

  3. Did Hanna’s mother ever actually appear to be the type of gypsy that Elizabeth felt would destroy their family’s business, or did she just have some other bias against her?

There was nothing about Hanna’s mother that said gypsy, as the tribe is meant to blend in with society. Elizabeth is a snob, very biased and even a racist woman. She herself wasn’t from high society. She bought her way into it by marrying John, and you’ll find that usually people who do that are the most prejudice of all.  Just the fact that Hanna’s mother was a waitress already made Elizabeth not want her near her son. Then comes Boris who tells Elizabeth Hanna’s mother is a gypsy from a horrible evil tribe, and that seals the poor girl’s fate.

  5. Hanna was a spoiled brat in the beginning of the story. Was this because of her grandmother or something that her father and step mother had done?

Elizabeth, her grandmother, was the biggest influence in Hanna’s life. She was very careful to marry her son John to Camilla, a woman whom she could manipulate and who would never interfere with her control of the family. Hence, Elizabeth is the only female role model Hanna has.

  7. Ornella had a lot of unusual potion components, but the one that I noticed over and over was pee. She had pee from all different kinds of creatures (as well as a baby). Why did you use so much pee in the story?

Because pee, or urine, has Urea and, in concentrations up to 10m, Urea is a powerful protein denaturant, as it disrupts the noncovalent bonds in the proteins. This property can be exploited to increase the solubility of some proteins in the potions.

Kidding. I got that from Wikipedia because I loved your question. Potions have to have those weird and gross components so pee was a favorite option without making it too gross. Also, gypsies use many elements from nature in their potions. What could be more natural than pee? And my editor and I got carried away when reviewing. He added a few strange pees too.

  9. How many of the rumors started at school about Hanna were actually Susan’s doing instead of Alistair’s?

Alistair was behind all the rumors involving Hanna’s visit to Vival. He wanted to humiliate her the way he believed she had done to Ellie, because of Ellie’s origin. He hoped to weaken Hanna’s power and influence over the other students. He would never use Hanna’s mother against her having lived through a similar situation with his.

Susan, on the contrary, doesn’t care that her mother is a kleptomaniac, as there are plenty of those in high society. She attacked Hanna’s royal ancestry, which Hanna rubbed into Susan’s face every chance she got, because she wanted Hanna’s throne. As Hanna says, there’s always rehab for vices but none for bad ancestry.

  11. Shameless plug time! What can we expect from you in the future?

Fallen Ruler, to be released soon. The novel differs from Veiled Mist as it mixes paranormal with Sci-Fi and plenty of adventure.

For sixteen years, Lya, has lived as a normal human, until her father, Walter, gets involved with the wrong people and puts Lya’s life at risk. During a visit to Miami, Lya’s older sister is kidnapped, and Lya and her father are subsequently taken hostage by Walter’s associates and forced to board a plane to India. When the plane lands in Delhi, Lya is rescued by three monks and taken to a Monastery. There her reality is shattered, when she learns the true identity of her rescuers and, even more surprisingly, herself. Lya is now faced with the toughest decision of her life. Can she live up to her ethereal destiny and save her family?

Savory Sunday: Buckeyes

Savory Sunday

If you live in Ohio, you know about Buckeyes. They are more than just the state nut, they are also a type of cookie/ball. I never know what you should call them because to mean they aren't cookies, but you will find them listed among cookies. They are peanut butter balls dipped in melted chocolate. I have two different recipes for them. One recipe is actually called Chocolate Peanut Butter Balls (which is the version that comes from Florida) and then I have Ohio Buckeyes. My father-in-law apparently made amazing Buckeyes when he was still with us for Christmas, so this year I decided to try out the only recipe I have as a surprise for my family. If you have ever tasted a buckeye, you know that there are two types: the kind that actually taste like peanut butter and the kind that taste like powdered sugar. These lean more towards the peanut butter tasting ones.

1/2 cup Butter or Margarine, at room temperature
1 (1-pound) box Confectioners' Sugar
1 1/2 cupPeanut Butter
1 tsp Vanilla Extract
1 (12-ounce) pkg Real Chocolate Chips
1/4 stick
1. Cream the butter, confectioners' sugar, peanut butter, and vanilla.
2. Form into (buckeye-size) balls and refrigerate overnight.
3. Melt the chocolate chips and paraffin in the top of a double boiler.
4. Stick a toothpick in the candy ball and dip it into the chocolate mixture. Leave part of the ball uncovered so that it resembles a buckeye, but cover the toothpick hole (If you know how to do that, tell me!).
5. Place balls on wax paper to allow to cool and harden. These can be frozen if desired.
**Makes 3-4 dozen**

I was lying in tall grass, dotted with wildflowers and warm from the summer sun. I just lay there for a few moments enjoying the peaceful feeling of floating, before suddenly realizing that this was somehow all wrong. I sat up and looked around puzzled. There was no sign of the shop I’d been in or even the village. Sparse trees surrounded the meadow I was lying in, and I could see the river flowing to my left through the gap in the trees. There were two fishing boats tied up to posts rising out of the muddy bank, but no sign of the marina or the shops that were there just a few moments ago.

I turned to my right, and my blood ran cold. I could see the castle perched on the hill above me, except it was no longer a sinister relic of another time. The castle stood intact and proud, the honey-colored stones warmed by the sun, and its leaded windows reflecting the afternoon light. The wall encircling the castle rose high and impregnable, broken only by the arched wooden doors studded with iron nails and partially opened. I could hear distant voices, and the barking of dogs carried on the wind.

What was going on? One minute I was in the shop looking at the cupid clock, and now I was lying in a meadow not too far from the castle; that up until five minutes ago was just a sad ruin. I looked at my watch. It was 4:10pm. Only five minutes had passed since I turned the hands on the ormolu clock. How did I get here? I looked around again. In relation to the river and the castle, I was sitting in about the spot where the shop would have been, except there was no shop and no street. I could see some fishermen’s huts off in the distance, where there were holiday cottages just a few minutes ago. I closed my eyes, shook my head and opened them again. I was still in the same spot. Reluctantly, I got to my feet and looked around again.

Grishma Excerpt #ReleaseDayDiva

“How could she?” Brooklyn hissed. “She is supposed to be one of my best friends! How long has this been going on behind my back?” The tears kept coming as her run slowed to a walk. Further and further away from the best friend that deceived her and the boy that broke her heart. She wasn’t sure how much time had passed, but Brooklyn soon became aware that she had no idea where she was. A forest and gently sloping hills surrounded her and it became difficult to navigate her way through the terrain. Her only light was the full moon above. “Great, I look like a hot mess and I’m probably werewolf or vampire bait,” Brooklyn said sitting down for a minute to get her bearings. Crickets chirped and the wind rustled leaves in the trees somewhere above her head. Then, suddenly, everything went quiet. Chills raced up her spine. She looked around. “Hello?” She heard a loud snap followed by several cracks in the distance. Whatever was making that noise was on the move and coming closer, fast. The smell of rotting fish filled her nose and she gagged. What the hell is going on? Her heart thumped in her chest and she looked for somewhere to hide but the abnormally bright moon made that difficult. All of the sudden, a figure crashed through the trees and collided with her! She hit the ground and her shoes went flying into the air. Her elbow hit a rock. She tried to sit up, but couldn’t. The wind had been knocked right out of her. Panic set in. What just happened? What hit me? Did I break anything? Thoughts bombarded her mind as she attempted to take a breath. She started gasping for air just so her lungs could process the oxygen. She sat up and looked around.

I live in Southern California but still consider myself part Texan by birthright. I was born in Houston and grew up in Dallas. I've resided in California since the mid 1980's but get back to Texas as much as possible. My first two published novels--GARGOYLES and THE UNNATURAL are biomedical thrillers. Actually THE UNNATURAL could also fall into the horror genre as it is a pretty bizarre tale. BARBARY POINT is a love story about a successful young woman who falls in love with a fishing guide. It was written on a suggestion from a former agent.

My favorite football team is the Superbowl champs GREEN BAY PACKERS. Sorry Cowboys. But when GB is not on the gridiron--Go Dallas! Great Cheerleaders, too!

I enjoy the outdoors and as a side note I'm one of only a few individuals to ever swim across Wisconsin's chilly Lake Winnebago. Does this make me a better writer--probably not.

When I'm not working on my next project, I enjoy relaxing and fishing at our family vacation home in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

There is nothing I enjoy more than a good book that takes me away from my everyday stresses and problems. I particularly like books that are set in the past, where the characters must navigate the volatile political climates of their time, while still managing to live, love, and cause mischief.

I've always had a particular fascination with the paranormal, and I explore some of these themes in my books. I believe that nothing is truly impossible. A true love can transcend space and time, and live on forever.

Malefic, the evil spawn of the demon Biskara, razes towns and cities in his quest to rule Azimuth, and yearns to turn his forces against Earth. Yet every time Biskara gets close to achieving his malevolent goals, the Assembly uses the Silver Sphere, a sophisticated armillary device, to thwart him. With the Assembly deposed, Biskara directing Malefic's conquests, and the Silver Sphere out of reach, Shelby is thrust into an unforgettable quest with her fellow Kin. She must learn to kill and lead an army into battle, or Azimuth—and Earth—will fall.

How to Write by the Seat of Your Pants: Outline or No?

An editor once told me that all writers fall into two categories: Architects and Gardeners.

Both are capable of incredible world building, intricate characters and compelling plot lines which captivate the imagination of readers everywhere. But when you’re just beginning on your road to becoming a published author, how do you know what sort of writing style works for you?

If you’re an architect, writing by the seat of your pants will likely leave you staring at a blank screen and a blinking cursor wondering what the heck you’re going to write. If you’re a gardener, the painstakingly methodical process of outlining, crafting character sketches and planning your entire story arc down to finite details may sap all of the enjoyment out of your work. Like your parents always told you, it’s important to be yourself whenever you sit down to create your story. It’s important to breathe life into your characters by utilizing a writing style which helps you best tap into your life experiences.

Though no two authors are exactly alike, they bear similar traits which may help them identify what sort of writing style may best suit them. Identifying these traits or signs should make it easier for each writer to find the style which works best.

  1. It’s all in the details
If it’s important to you to narrowly define each dimension of your character, your plot and your story arc before you start creating, then you’re going to need in-depth character sketches, scene summaries and overall outlines to use as the bricks and mortar to house the direction of your narrative. All of this prep work will enable you to make sure your character remains consistent and keeps your story believable. Nothing turns away readers faster than a dramatic shift in the personality of a protagonist without the proper warning.

  2. What you’re writing
One of the determining factors in your writing style may be easily defined by what you’re interested in writing. If you plan to write nonfiction, historical fiction, true crime or other stories in which it’s important to do copious amounts of research to maintain story integrity, then it’s best to create blueprints when you’re building your work. The last thing you want is for a reader to be turned off because they have more knowledge on the subject than you do.

  3. Your mind is made up
If you tend to be inflexible during the editing process because it’s important to you as an artist to have your vision carried out strictly brick-by-brick from your initial plans, then you need to present your editors and publishers with clearly defined blueprints to adhere to when they’re trying to refine your manuscript. They’re going to want to know why a character has to look and feel a certain way before they go wading hundreds of pages deep into your masterpiece.

  1. You’re full of manure
Some of the best fiction stories are spawned from only a general idea. This seed is planted, watered and the direction it grows from there may wind up being vastly different from where it started. These sorts of writers thrive on being able to shape and mold their characters on the fly to fit a changing plot line or story arc. These writers tend to leave more of the smaller details to the imaginations of individual readers. A popular example is George R.R. Martin and his Songs of Fire and Ice series. In interviews, Martin says he rarely plans exactly where his story is going.

  2. You get lost in translation
Everyone’s mind works differently. For some writers, there’s no scarier level of Hell than being stuck in front of a computer screen staring at Roman numerals, letters or numbers. They shut down and lose focus altogether during planning. These writers often claim it’s hard to “speak” to their character when ripped out of the scene or story itself and put on paper to be defined by physical traits, clothing, pets, belongings, etc. During your planning stages, it’s important to ask yourself if certain aspects of the character or conflict or plot must be hammered out at that time if it’s blocking you from making progress. If it’s something which can be fleshed out later, then an exact blueprint isn’t necessary.

  3. You like to experiment
Like the choose-your-own adventure fantasy books of our youth, some authors have to try out several paths to wander down before committing to the one they like best. It’s generally accepted that there’s at least three conflicts in fiction novels. Two of the conflicts are lesser ones which upon being resolved help to flesh out the major conflict. These sorts of writers often have to go into the lab and become a mad scientist to mix up the right chemistry experiment to create suspense and carry out the resolution in their novel. These sorts of writers must be patient because it involves creating and destroying several different scenarios before settling on the right one.

Wordy Wednesday: Velvet Excerpt #FMBTours

Title: Velvet
Author: Xavier Axelson
Publisher: Seventh Window Publications
Description: The first novel from Xavier Axelson is set against a backdrop of decadence, privilege, and intrigue. Virago, the royal tailor, makes a discovery that will test the bonds of brotherhood, unravel the forbidden secrets of his heart and threaten the very fabric of his existence.

In a land where cruelty is disguised as allegiance, loyalty is masked by obligation and the laws of sumptuary govern the people, nothing is more dangerous than Velvet.

I’d been staring at the vast body of water surrounding the ship when I was startled to find a woman, heavy with child standing by my side. She wore a red gown that gathered beneath her ample breasts. The gown fell freely, billowing against her in the brisk sea air. Her red hair hung in two braids threaded with crimson leather. Upon turning her head, small red jewels, woven throughout her hair, caught the light.

“The sea is dark as the grave, and as good at keeping secrets.”

“Who are you?” I asked. Since I’d boarded the ship the day before, I’d conversed only with Seton and my brother, Sylvain. I’d yet to earn my sea legs and everything seemed strange.

“I am Adis, wife of Doremme, the man whose ship you stand upon.” She came closer. “Secrets are only as powerful as those who carry them and the sea is a perfect place to bury what haunts you.”

“You talk as though you know me, and as I am a stranger on this ship, I know this cannot be.” I was about to bow and take my leave when she laughed.

“Fear is not your way, tailor. You were the royal tailor of the king whose land we left, were you not?”

Were the royal tailor… Her words struck at my heart. I felt this truth so keenly that I gripped the ship railings to steady myself.

“I fear only those who know more of me than I wish, and while I am indebted to your husband for granting us passage, I am in no mood for games.”

Though her laughter died, a smile lingered on her lips. “I mean you no harm, but you seem to have caught the interest of my child.”

I looked at her swollen belly. “Your child?”

“This is my third and final.” Her hands caressed her stomach. “She will be a visionary, and in her birth, I will know death. Not unlike your mother. She bore your brother, who I am told is also a visionary. And blind. How fortunate. Those who are physically afflicted see further than those who aren’t. Nature seldom curses without blessing at the same time.”

This time I laughed. “Perhaps you should ask my brother if he thinks himself fortunate. Or better, summon my father from the grave. Ask if he wished his wife lived and his son had sight!”

After this outburst, we grew silent, but the woman did not leave my side.

I closed my eyes and swallowing hard, felt the pull of the stiff fabric scrap tied around my throat. The raucous shrieks of hungry gulls overhead made me look up into the sky. I watched as the birds swooped and mercilessly chased each other. I envied their flight, but cringed beneath their cries. Behind my eyes, I saw white peacocks, heard their shrieks, and felt the crawl of disease. I shuddered, shook my head of further memory, and let my eyes fall upon the distant horizon. Would I never know peace? Or would memories chase me like the gulls chase one another, endlessly hungry and insistent?

When Adis eventually spoke, these questions and memories faded away. “True, your father suffered, but his gifts as a tailor delivered him from the grief of losing his wife and gave him the strength to care for a blind son.”

The truth in her words, stirred long buried pain. While Sylvain’s blind, tumultuous, and bloody welcoming into the world killed our mother, it also strengthened my father’s resolve to care for us at any cost.

I know not what would have become of us without King Killian’s demand for my meager abilities as a tailor. We would have been lost, we owe our king a great debt and service.

My father told this to me one day when I found him bleary eyed and exhausted at his work. I could remember the way his hands trembled, the nerves in his fingers twitching involuntarily as he struggled with buttonholes on a vest meant for Killian’s nephew.

When his voice vanished, a bitter sadness rose in me as the sea’s waves crashed against the ship.

“Say no more to me. If you were not mistress of this vessel I would think unkindly of you!”

Before she could reply, music, soft and familiar reached us. I knew the player of the tune, knew it because my heart leapt at its playing as it did the first time I’d heard it.

“Someone has leant Seton a lyre. How beautifully he plays, and how lucky his hands are healing. He is a man of passion and strength. It is no wonder you found love with him, as he with you.” Adis placed a hand on my wrist. “I am no witch or visionary. My daughter beckons from my womb. I am but a vessel as is this ship. She is my most precious cargo, and anxious to know life. You must forgive me if I have angered you. Her voice comes from my lips, so I am often unaware of what I say.”

The music rose, fell away only to start again, and as it did, I examined the woman, and seeing her kind face, put a tired hand over hers. “There is nothing to forgive. I am the one speaking from another place.”

“Your voice comes from the shores we have left behind. It would be wise to find a new sound to carry with you.”

Beyond her I saw my brother sitting cross-legged, his fox playing in his lap. He seemed peaceful. “I keep staring into the sea hoping it will take the past from me, but it seems I may never know peace.”

“In time, you shall. Nothing is forever, except the sea.” Adis cast her eyes from my face to the expanse of water surrounding us. “She is our eternal mother and will listen to you forever.”

Behind Adis’s rather mystical analogy, I had a sobering thought. “There is so much uncertainty in the world. I wonder if I have done right. Perhaps I could have done better.”

“You left a land soon to be riddled with illness. This alone made it the wisest decision for you all.”

Her knowing so much of my life discomforted me. “Must everything be told in portents and omens? What of reality? What of truth?”

“Ahh truth. It is a funny thing and varied as the sunlight on the waves. I am a merchant’s wife and have seen much in this world. Men who love men, women who love women, even a man who loved a woman he believed to have been transformed into a goat by the tree witches in the north! The world is wide and there are many lands with many kinds of people. You will see soon enough.”

“I have not heard talk of the tree witches since I played at my mother’s feet. Surely they no longer exist!” I replied, incredulously.

“I cannot say. Who can say if they exist or ever really did?” Adis said.

I sighed resignedly. “I have lived a small life in the court of a small king, and I carry the wounds of that life as sure as I carry the clothes on my back.”

“It is not for me to say what you carry with you, but I can give you a piece of advice not from my daughter, but from my own lips: Stop trying to escape what haunts you, instead think long and hard about it. Every detail, every nightmare, dream and transgression. Leave nothing out. Do this until you have expelled the poison, and when there is no more, you will find yourself exactly where you are supposed to be.”

With these words, Adis left me. I stood alone, listening to the sea, the sound of Seton’s music, the distant cries of the squabbling gulls, and my eyes focused on the unknown horizon.

What led me to find myself on the water, destination unknown? The life I knew was gone, broken, and mercurial as the swirling foam frothing in the ships crushing wake.

I would tell myself the story, if only to steal a glimpse at the unknown ending.

How would my tale end? Beginnings are for children; fairy stories begin with “Once upon a time.”

Once upon a time there was a tailor. He knew string, scissor, and pin. He did not know his heart.
My breath caught.

Oh, my heart. Once upon a time, there was a heart and it was not free… I was a tailor.
No, it cannot begin this way.
My heart knew dangerous things, but now it was free and in it’s new freedom I allowed it to teach me the way my story should begin and knew by wild instinct, if I followed it, I would know the ending, a true, and dare I hope, happy ending.

With no one to listen but the dark sea and the wheeling, crying gulls, I closed my eyes and let my thoughts move with the undulating water, its gentle rocking seeming to urge the release of my torment.

The castle, dark and glorious, loomed up in my memory…

Grim by Joseph Spencer

When everything is taken from him, Detective Adam White must choose what's most important. Does he stick to the heroic ideals which made him a famed paragon of justice and take down a murderous madman? Or does he give in to his vigilante impulses, avenge his wife's murder, and become the type of killer he's hunted for so many years?

About the Author, Joseph Spencer
Joseph Spencer

Joseph Spencer is the author of the Sons of Darkness series launched by his debut novel, Grim, on September 1, 2012. Work on his second book of the series, Wrage, is already underway and is expected to be released some time in 2013.

The Sons of Darkness is a series of paranormal crime thrillers following investigations into mysterious deaths in the central Illinois city of Prairieville. Home of the notorious serial killer, The Reaper, Prairieville has had a history of violence centered on an ongoing feud between the Marino and Black organized crime families. When bodies start showing up again at the abandoned Marino State Hospital, many fear the Reaper has returned. The people of Prairieville are about to find out their problems stem from a supernatural source which has lurked in secret for decades.

As a boy, Joseph Spencer immersed himself in the deductive logic of Sherlock Holmes, the heroic crime fighting of Batman and Spider-Man, and a taste for the tragic with dramas from poets like Shakespeare and Homer.

Before Joseph took to spinning his own tales, he pursued a career in print sports journalism, graduating with honors from Clinton (IL) High School in 1996 and summa cum laude from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale in 2000. He covered such events as NASCAR’s Subway 500 race in Martinsville, the NBA Draft Camp in Chicago, the Junior College World Series, and Minor League Baseball’s Midwest League All-Star Game during a ten-year career throughout the Midwest. Now, he works as an emergency telecommunications specialist with an Illinois police department. The combination of years of writing experience with a background working with law enforcement professionals gave rise to his writing aspirations.

Joseph was married Dr. Amy (Waggoner) Spencer, an accomplished veterinary doctor, on March 14, 2012. He received word his debut novel was accepted by his publisher, Damnation Books, the next day. Joseph and Amy look forward to their honeymoon in Paris in September 2012. Murphy, a 15-year-old orange tabby, is perhaps the most vocal member of the family. The Spencer family enjoys reading Charlaine Harris, George R.R. Martin, Mary Janice Davidson, and most paranormal stories. The Spencers also enjoy quoting movie lines from The Princess Bride, Rain Man, Bridesmaids, and Office Space.

Tuesday Talk: Honey The Hero Review #IOBookTours

Honey the Hero 2
Title: Honey the Hero
Series: A Bird Brain Book
Author: Emlyn Chand
Publisher: Evolved Publishing
Description: Honey, an inquisitive young parakeet living in the Australian Outback, decides to become a superhero after she spies a human family watching Superman. Since she already has the power of flight, all she needs to do is create a costume to conceal her true identity and then fly off in search of animals that need rescuing.

Unfortunately, every time she tries to help, Honey only ends up making matters worse. She spoils Kangaroo’s game of hide-and-go-seek by revealing his hiding place to Wallaby; Mr. Anteater must go hungry when she alerts the ants to his presence, and Mrs. Koala is made a laughingstock among bears when Honey pretends to be her Joey. Finally realizing that she’s not as heroic as she’d like, Honey gives up her day-saving efforts.

But what happens when someone actually needs Honey’s help? Will she rise to the challenge?

Review: Honey is a parakeet living in Australia. She is a very adventurous bird who loved to watch everything around her. One day she sees a family watching a movie about a super hero and decides that she wants to be a super hero too. The adventurous bird flies around the outback trying to help other animals only to fail three times. However, the lesson of the story shines through here to show kids that you shouldn't give up and that even though you are small, it doesn't mean you can't help others. Honey is finally able to help a baby dingo making her the hero of the day. It's a cute story to help kids learn to never give up on their dreams, to be persistent, and size doesn't matter. As always, I love the cute art in these Bird Brain books.
